A yet to be named women's professional soccer team based in Atlanta, Georgia, was announced as the National Women's Soccer League's 17th franchise on November 11, 2025. The team will begin play in 2028 and will be owned by Arthur Blank who also owns Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer, and the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League.

History

Atlanta, Georgia previously had a professional women's soccer team in the two editions of the Atlanta Beat, the first of which played in the Women's United Soccer Association from 2001 to 2003, while the second played in Women's Professional Soccer from 2010 to 2012. [1] Atlanta has also had a men's soccer team, Atlanta United, in Major League Soccer, since 2017. [2] For nearly a decade prior to the team's announcement, Atlanta was viewed as a top candidate for an expansion team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). [2]

On November 9, 2025, The Athletic first reported that Atlanta was set to become the newest NWSL expansion team, the first expansion to the league since Denver Summit FC, announced earlier that year. [1] [2] The expansion franchise was officially awarded by NWSL on November 11. [3] The team is to be owned by Arthur Blank's AMB Sports + Entertainment group, which also owns Atlanta United, as well as the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League. [1] The expansion fee was reported to be a record price of $165 million, up from the $110 million fee paid by Denver Summit FC. [4] The team will play their home matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. [5] According to ESPN, the team is planned to make their debut during the 2028 NWSL season. [2]
