The municipal unit has an area of 123.027 km2 (47.501 sq mi). Population 6,936 (2011). The seat of the municipality was in Adele. Arkadi is renowned for its famous monastery. It is the site of the Holocaust of Arkadi.

The municipal unit has an area of 95.64 km2 (36.93 sq mi). It was named after the 10th century Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, who retook the island from the Muslims. Population 8,911 (2011). The seat of the municipality was in Gonia. The ancient city of Eleutherna is located within the municipal unit.

It is thought that Monastiraki was developed by Phaistos inhabitants founding a satellite center as they pushed out into the Amari Valley.
