Auckland Transport (AT) is the council-controlled organisation (CCO) of Auckland Council responsible for transport projects and services. It was established by section 38 of the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, and operates under that act and the Local Government (Auckland Transitional Provisions) Act 2010.[ citation needed ]
Auckland Transport began operating from 1 November 2010, at the inauguration of Auckland Council. It assumed the role of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and the combined transport functions of Auckland's seven city and district councils, all of which were disestablished.[ citation needed ]
On 3 December 2024, the Transport Minister Simeon Brown and Mayor of Auckland Wayne Brown announced an overhaul of Auckland Transport's mandate and functions. Key changes include stripping Auckland Transport of various planning powers and repositioning the agency as a transport project and services delivery agency. The Auckland Council will be given Auckland Transport's former road-controlling authority powers with responsibility for regional land and public transport planning. Auckland's local boards will also be given decision-making powers over certain transport policies such as parking, speed limits, cycleways and pedestrian crossings. [3] [4]
AT is responsible for the Auckland Region's transport infrastructure (excluding state highways and railway tracks) and public transport. It designs, builds and maintains roads, ferry wharves, cycleways and walkways; co-ordinates road safety and community transport initiatives; and it plans, co-ordinates and funds bus, train and ferry services. It is the largest of the council's organisations, with over 1700 staff, controlling half of all council rates. [1] Dr David Warburton was the inaugural chief executive of the organisation. His successor, Shane Ellison, joined the organisation in December 2017. [5]
Auckland Transport appoints parking wardens to fulfil its responsibility of parking and special vehicle lane enforcement in the region. [6] [7] In 2017, it created the new position of Transport Officer, in response to issues regarding fare-evasion and disorderly behavior on public transport. [8] Transport Officers are empowered by law to remove passengers off trains and issue infringement notices of $150 to enforce fare payment. [9] [10] [11]

The Auckland Harbour Bridge is an eight-lane motorway bridge over the Waitematā Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand. The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) was the central co-ordinating agency for transport in the Auckland Region of New Zealand from 2004 to 2010. In this role, ARTA provided public transport services, assigned funding and subsidies, and organised and advised on many aspects of regionwide transport. ARTA was under the control of the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and was replaced by Auckland Transport on 1 November 2010.

The Snapper card is a contactless electronic ticketing card used to pay for bus and train fares in Wellington, New Zealand. It was introduced in Wellington in July 2008. Another version – the Snapper HOP card – was introduced to Auckland in 2011 and withdrawn from Auckland in late 2013. Snapper CityLink cards were introduced in Whangārei in March 2014 and withdrawn in September 2018. It was owned by Snapper Services Limited, a former subsidiary of Infratil until 2019 when it was sold to ICM Limited, a subsidiary of Allectus Capital.

Cycling in New Zealand is the 5th most popular form of active recreation, but a very marginal commuting mode, with the share hovering around 1–3% in most major cities. This is due to a number of factors, principally safety fears.
Auckland Council is the local government council for the Auckland Region in New Zealand. It is a territorial authority that has the responsibilities, duties and powers of a regional council and so is a unitary authority, according to the Local Government Act 2009, which established the council. The governing body consists of a mayor and 20 councillors, elected from 13 wards. There are also 149 members of 21 local boards who make decisions on matters local to their communities. It is the largest council in Oceania, with a $3 billion annual budget, $29 billion of ratepayer equity, and 9,870 full-time staff as of 30 June 2016. The council began operating on 1 November 2010, combining the functions of the previous regional council and the region's seven city and district councils into one "super council" or "super city".
Cycling in Auckland is a mode of transport in Auckland, New Zealand. The dominance of the car in the city, the negative attitudes of car drivers and general changes in transport patterns have made it a very marginal transport mode in the early 21st century, with remaining cyclists often riding for leisure and sports purposes.
The AT HOP card is an electronic fare payment card that was released in two versions on Auckland public transport services, beginning in May 2011. The smart card roll out was the first phase in the introduction of an integrated ticketing and fares system that was rolled out across the region.
The City Rail Link (CRL) is a rail project currently under construction in Auckland, New Zealand. The project consists of a 3.5 km (2.2 mi) long double-track rail tunnel underneath Auckland's city centre, between Waitematā (Britomart) and Maungawhau railway stations. Two new underground stations will be constructed to serve the city centre: Te Waihorotiu near Aotea Square and Karanga-a-Hape near Karangahape Road. Waitematā will be converted from a terminus station into a through station, and Mount Eden station will be replaced by Maungawhau station, a new station with four platforms to serve as an interchange between the new CRL line and the existing Western Line.
The Nelson Street Cycleway is a cycleway in Auckland, New Zealand. The most well-known section of the path is Te Ara I Whiti, translated as, and commonly known as Lightpath. The cycleway then continues on to the Nelson Street arterial road into the City Centre.
Public transport in Hamilton and the Waikato Region consists mainly of bus services, as well as some limited train and ferry services. Services are mainly infrequent, and investment hasn't been sufficient to compete with cars, so that subsidies, first introduced in 1971, have increased.
Motu Move is a contactless fare payment system in development as the National Ticketing Solution (NTS) for New Zealand. Contracted to the American company Cubic Transportation Systems, it is expected to be piloted on Route 29 in Christchurch with adult non-concession fares on 8 December 2024 before beginning initial rollout in Timaru and Temuka in early 2025 with the full range of payment options and concessions. By 2026, Motu Move will be available nationwide excluding the Marlborough region. The aim is to achieve a nationally consistent payment system, with a choice of payment by contactless bank cards, mobile payment methods, pre-bought tickets or a prepaid Motu Move card valid for the whole country.
