Bilateral relations exist between Azerbaijan and Bangladesh. Azerbaijan's ambassador to India is also accredited to Bangladesh, while Bangladesh Ambassador to Turkey is accredited as Bangladesh's ambassador to Azerbaijan. Bangladesh supported Azerbaijan in the UN with regard to the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. Azerbaijan supported Bangladesh on its nomination to International Maritime Organization in 2011.[ citation needed ]
The two nations have had connections for several centuries, particularly due to a commonality through the religion of Islam. During the reign of Sultan Iwaz Shah in 1221, a khanqah was constructed for the Muslim preacher Makhdum Shah in Birbhum (located in West Bengal, India). [1] [2] This construction was facilitated by a man named Ibn Muḥammad al-Marāghī whose ancestors came from Maragheh in present-day Azerbaijan. [3] This suggests that people from Azerbaijan had been migrating to Bengal throughout this period. [4]
Azerbaijan declared its independence on December 30, 1991; on February 26, 1992, Bangladesh became the 13th nation to officially begin diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan.
In 2013, Muhammad Faruk Khan, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism of Bangladesh, paid a visit to Baku to participate in the 2nd World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue. [5] Former Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dipu Moni paid an official visit to Baku in 2013. Moni had an official meeting with the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. She also held meetings with the Economic Development Minister Shahin Mustafayev and the Chief of State Migration Service Minister Firudin Nabiyev. Dipu Moni's official visit to Baku was termed as a "turning point" in the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Bangladesh. [6] Ibrahim Hajiyev, Azerbaijan's ambassador to India, is also accredited to Bangladesh. [7] Bangladesh Ambassador to Turkey, M Allama Siddiki, is also accredited as Bangladesh's ambassador to Azerbaijan. [8]
Bangladesh supported Azerbaijan in the UN with regard to the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. [9] Bangladesh supports Azerbaijan's position regarding the Khojaly genocide issue. [10]
In 2013, Azerbaijan and Bangladesh signed an MoU relating to cooperation between their Foreign Service Academies. [11] Azerbaijan supported Bangladesh on its nomination to International Maritime Organization in 2011 [7] Both countries are members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank initiative. [12]
Azerbaijan has expressed interest in transferring its advanced mining technology to Bangladesh. [13] [14]
Azerbaijan and Bangladesh have shown interest in expanding trade and investment. Azerbaijan is keen to import Bangladeshi ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals, leather and ceramics products. Azerbaijan is also interested in the importation of labour from Bangladesh in support of infrastructure development efforts. [15] In 2013, the two countries agreed to form a Joint Economic Commission (JEC) "to explore untapped trade, economic and investment opportunities". [9] In 2014, Azerbaijan sent a draft agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation (TEC) To the Ministry of Commerce, Government of Bangladesh. The agreement will help to "broaden their cooperation involving government bodies operating in the economic fields, professional organisations, business, federations, chambers, regional and local entities." The agreement also calls for increasing "visits, meetings and other interactions between individuals and enterprises of both countries to ensure participation in fairs, business events, seminars, symposia and conferences." Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) is the news agency of Bangladesh. BSS was established on 1 January 1972 by the Government of Bangladesh soon after the Bangladesh Liberation War. Abul Kalam Azad is the current managing director and chief editor of the agency.
Dipu Moni is a Bangladeshi politician and former minister of social welfare. She was a member of parliament for the Chandpur-3 constituency. She was minister of education in the fourth Hasina ministry and minister of foreign affairs in the second Hasina ministry. She was appointed as the first female foreign minister of Bangladesh on 6 January 2009, serving until 2013. Currently she is Joint secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League.
Bangladesh–Saudi Arabia relations are the diplomatic and bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia. Relations between the two nations had a strained beginning but have grown strong since then. Being a Muslim-majority state, Bangladesh attaches a special importance to its ties with Saudi Arabia, which is the birthplace of Islam. Both nations are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Saudi Arabia hosts a large proportion of the global Bangladeshi diaspora.
The Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic recognized Bangladesh's independence on 24 January 1972. Official diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Belarus were established in 1992. Neither country has a resident ambassador.
Bangladesh–Malawi relations are the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Malawi. Neither country has a resident ambassador. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were officially established in 2012, primarily due to former Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika's desire to build strong relations with Bangladesh. Both the countries are members of Group of 77 and Commonwealth of Nations.
Bangladesh–Kazakhstan relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Kazakhstan. The Bangladeshi President Iajuddin Ahmed said that the two countries enjoy cordial diplomatic relations and are working towards strengthen it further. Both the countries are members of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Neither country has a resident ambassador. In 2009, Kazakhstan announced it intended to open a consulate in Dhaka.
Bangladesh–Trinidad and Tobago relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Trinidad and Tobago. Neither country has a resident ambassador.
Bangladesh–Bulgaria relations refers to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Bulgaria. Relations between the two countries have been regarded as cordial with both the nations showing willingness to strengthen it further. Bulgaria was one of the few countries that recognized Bangladesh soon after its independence in 1971. Neither country has a resident ambassador.
Bangladesh–Kyrgyzstan relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Kyrgyzstan. Relations between the two countries have been described as strong. Neither country has a resident ambassador.
Bangladesh–Ireland relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Ireland.
Bangladesh–Latvia relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Latvia. Bangladesh was one of the first countries to recognize Latvia in 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries officially started on 21 January 1993.
Bilateral relations exist between Bangladesh and Austria. Relations between the two countries have been considered cordial with both the countries working towards further strengthen it. Bangladesh has an embassy in Vienna which also serves as the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations and other international organizations.
Bangladesh–Serbia relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Serbia. Relations between Yugoslavia and Bangladesh were officially established in 1971, immediately after the independence of Bangladesh. This has continued to the present with Serbia being the successor state to Yugoslavia. Serbia does not have a resident ambassador in Bangladesh, only an honorary consul. Bangladesh has a non-resident embassy in Rome.
Bangladesh–Poland relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Poland. Poland was the sixth country to recognize Bangladesh. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were officially established on 12 January 1972. While Bangladesh has an embassy in Warsaw, the Polish ambassador to India, who is resident in New Delhi, is also accredited to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh–Portugal relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Portugal. Bangladesh opened an embassy in Lisbon in 2012 and appointed its first ambassador to Portugal the following year. Portugal has a non-resident ambassador in New Delhi, India.
