The BMW Masters was a golf tournament played annually at Lake Malaren Golf Club, in Luodian, Shanghai, China. [1] The tournament began in 2011 and became a European Tour event in 2012. It was dropped from the European Tour in 2016.

Contents

In 2011, the tournament was called the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters. The event had a small field consisting of 30 top players from the European Tour and the Asian Tour. The winner received US$2 million, the largest first prize in golf, [2] coming from an overall prize fund of $5 million.

In 2012, it became a European Tour event and was renamed the BMW Masters. [3] The field was expanded to 78 players and the purse was increased to US$7 million. From 2013 to 2015, the tournament was part of the European Tour Final Series.

    Sheshan Golf Club is the first premier private golf club in Shanghai, China. Founded in 2004, the 18 hole golf course plays to a par of 72 and is designed by Nelson and Haworth Design, and spans over 7,266 yards. Every year, the club plays host to the WGC-HSBC Champions, and is currently the only club to host the Championship. Sheshan Golf Club was awarded the Best Golf Course in China by Golf Digest in 2013 and currently tops of the list of Top Clubs in China by Golf Magazine.

    Golf in China is a growing industry, with numerous golf courses being established, especially in the province of Hainan. In 2011, there were around 358,000 core players among the Chinese population, with a growth rate of 7.5%, and that figure was projected to grow to about 20 million by 2020.     The 2011 WGC-HSBC Champions was a golf tournament played from 3–6 November 2011 at the Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai, China. It was the third WGC-HSBC Champions tournament, and the fourth of four World Golf Championships events held in 2011. Former PGA Champion Martin Kaymer surged through the final day field to claim his first WGC win.

    The 2012 European Tour was the fourth edition of the Race to Dubai and the 41st season of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972.

    Luodian is a town in Baoshan District about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from central Shanghai, China. Luodian Old Town dates back to the Yuan Dynasty. Modern developments include Luodian Industrial Zone, and Luodian New Town, also known as North European New Town, which is a new town with a Nordic architectural theme. Luodian is a replica of Sigtuna.

    The 2019 European Tour was the 48th season of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972 and the 11th edition of the Race to Dubai.

    The 2020 European Tour was the 49th season of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972 and the 12th edition of the Race to Dubai.

    The 2021–22 PGA Tour was the 107th season of the PGA Tour, and the 55th since separating from the PGA of America. The season began on September 16, 2021. The 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs began on August 11, and concluded on August 28, 2022.
