Predecessor | BMW N46/N45 |
Successor | BMW N13 |
The BMW N43 is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine which was sold from 2006 to 2013. It replaced both the BMW N46 and BMW N45 engines. [1] However the N43 was not sold in countries with high sulfur fuel, [2] therefore the N45/N46 engines remained in production alongside the N43.
Compared with its N46 predecessor, the N43 features direct injection. [3]
In 2011, as part of BMW's shift to turbocharging, the N43 was replaced by the BMW N13 turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The N43 suffered various problems in service - breakage of the cam chain plastic guides leading to oil starvation as the debris blocked the oil strainer, and problems with the injectors, coil packs and the NOx sensor.

The N43B16 has a displacement of 1,599 cc (97.6 cu in) and produces 90 kW (121 bhp) and 160 N⋅m (118 lb⋅ft). [3] It is the successor to the BMW N45 engine and, as per the N45, does not have Valvetronic. [4]
Applications:
The N43B20 has a displacement of 1,995 cc (121.7 cu in) and produces up to 125 kW (168 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft). [3] [4]
In 2009, the 1,995 cc (121.7 cu in) N43B20 replaced the 1,599 cc (97.6 cu in) N43B16 in the 116i. Power remained at 90 kW (121 bhp), however torque was increased.
Applications:90 kW (121 bhp) version
105 kW (141 bhp) version
125 kW (168 bhp) version
The first generation of the BMW 1 Series consists of the BMW E81, BMW E82 (coupe), BMW E87 and BMW E88 (convertible) compact cars. The E81/E82/E87/E88 generation was produced from 2004 until 2013 and is sometimes collectively referred to as the E8x. The E8x replaced the 3 Series Compact as the entry-level models of the BMW range.
The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model codes E90 (saloon), E91, E92 (coupé) and E93 (convertible). The model was introduced in December 2004, and produced by BMW until October 2013 and is often collectively referred to as the E90 or E9x.
The BMW N42 is a DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine which replaced the BMW M43 and was produced from 2001-2004.
iDrive is an in-car communications and entertainment system, used to control most secondary vehicle systems in late-model BMW cars. It was launched in 2001, first appearing in the E65 7 Series. The system unifies an array of functions under a single control architecture consisting of an LCD panel mounted in the dashboard and a control knob mounted on the center console.
The BMW M47 and Rover Group M47R are straight-4 Diesel engines. Variants were manufactured by BMW from 1998 to 2007. BMW gradually adopted high-pressure common rail fuel injection systems over the lifetime of the M47.
The BMW M57 is a straight-6 diesel engine produced from 1998 up to 2013 in BMW's upper Austrian engine plant in Steyr.
The BMW S85B50 is a naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine which replaced the BMW S62 V8 engine in the M5 model and was produced from 2005–2010. It was both BMW's first and only production V10 engine, and the first petrol V10 engine to be available in a production sedan (saloon).
Prince is the codename for a family of straight-four 16-valve all-aluminium gasoline engines with variable valve lift and variable valve timing developed by BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën.
