The BMW M43 is an SOHC four-cylinder petrol engine which was produced from 1991-2002. [1] The M43 powered base-model cars, while higher performance models at the time were powered by the BMW M42 and BMW M44 DOHC engines. The M43 was produced at the Steyr engine plant. [2]
A version using natural-gas was produced for the E36 318i and the E34 518i.
Following the introduction of the BMW N42 engine in 2001, the M43 began to be phased out.
Compared with its BMW M40 predecessor, the M43 features both a camshaft position sensor and a knock sensor [3] as well as roller rockers and a timing chain (instead of the M40's finger rockers and timing belt). [4] [5] It also features a dual length intake manifold [6] ("DISA"), to provide torque across a wider rev range. [7]
In 1998 the displacement was increased to 1,895 cc (115.6 cu in), increasing torque to 180 N⋅m (133 lb⋅ft) at 3900 rpm. [1]

The 1,596 cc (97.4 cu in) M43B16 produces 75 kW (101 hp) and 150 N⋅m (111 lb⋅ft) of torque. It uses the Bosch Motronic 1.7.x and Bosch BMS43 engine management system. [8] There was also a natural gas-powered version of this car (also able to run on petrol) for the 1995 BMW 316g Compact.

The M43B18 has a 1,796 cc (109.6 cu in) displacement. It produces 85 kW (114 hp) and 124 lb⋅ft (168 N⋅m) and uses the Bosch Motronic 1.7.1 fuel injection system. [8] There was also a less powerful natural gas-powered version of this car (also able to run on petrol) for the BMW 518g Touring (E34). This model was only available for two years.
Applications:
The M43B19 (also known as the "M43TÜ") is the largest M43 engine, with a displacement of 1,895 cc (115.6 cu in). It produces up to 87 kW (117 hp) and 180 N⋅m (133 lb⋅ft), and uses BMW's BMS 46 engine management system. [8] The 77 kW (105 PS) versions do not have the DISA intake manifold and also have a smaller camshaft compared to the 118 PS versions. Note the M43B16, M43B18 and the M43B19 (118 PS version) all have the same camshaft.

The BMW E34 is the third generation of the BMW 5 Series, which was produced from November 2, 1987, until 1996. Initially launched as a sedan in January 1988, the E34 also saw a "Touring" station wagon (estate) body style added in September 1992, a first for the 5 Series. BMW replaced the E34 with the E39 5 Series in December 1995, although E34 Touring models remained in production until June 1996.
The BMW M30 is a SOHC straight-six petrol engine which was produced from 1968 to 1995. With a production run of 27 years, it is BMW's longest produced engine and was used in many car models.
The BMW M10 is a SOHC inline-4 petrol engine which was produced by BMW from 1962-1988. It was the company's first four-cylinder engine since the BMW 309 ended production in 1936 and was introduced in the New Class sedans.
The BMW M20 is a SOHC straight-six petrol engine which was produced from 1977 to 1993. It was introduced eight years after the larger BMW M30 straight-six engine, which remained in production alongside the M20.
The BMW M40 is an SOHC straight-four petrol engine which was produced from 1987–1994. It served as BMW's base model four-cylinder engine and was produced alongside the higher performance BMW M42 DOHC four-cylinder engine from 1989 onwards.
The BMW M42 is a DOHC straight-four petrol engine which was produced from 1989-1996. It is BMW's first mass-production DOHC engine and was produced alongside the BMW M40 SOHC four-cylinder engine as the higher performance engine.
The BMW M44 is a DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine which replaced the BMW M42 and was produced from 1996 to 2000 at the Steyr factory. It was produced alongside the BMW M43 SOHC four-cylinder engine, with the M44 being the higher performance engine. In 2000, the M44 was replaced by the BMW N42 engine.
The BMW M50 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which was produced from 1990 to 1996. It was released in the E34 520i and 525i, to replace the M20 engine.
The BMW M52 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which was produced from 1994 to 2000. It was released in the E36 320i, to replace the M50. The BMW S52 engine is a high performance variant of the M52 which powered the American and Canadian market E36 M3 from 1996 to 1999.
The BMW S38 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which replaced the M88 and was produced from 1984–1995. The S38 was originally produced for North America as an equivalent to the M88 with slightly lower power output. In 1989, power output of the S38 was increased and it became the worldwide replacement for the M88.
The BMW E30 is the second generation of BMW 3 Series, which was produced from 1982 to 1994 and replaced the E21 3 Series. The model range included 2-door coupe and convertible body styles, as well as being the first 3 Series to be produced in 4-door sedan and wagon/estate body styles. It was powered by four-cylinder petrol, six-cylinder petrol and six-cylinder diesel engines, the latter a first for the 3 Series. The E30 325iX model was the first BMW to have all-wheel drive.
The third generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E36, and was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1990 to 2000. The initial models were of the four-door sedan body style, followed by the coupé, convertible, wagon ("Touring"), and eventually hatchback ("Compact").

The BMW M54 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 DOHC petrol engine produced from 2000 to 2006. It was released in the E53 X5 and is the replacement for the M52 engine. The S54 is the equivalent high performance engine, used in the E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupé/Roadster and the E85/E86 Z4 M. The BMW M56 SULEV engine is based on the M54.
General Motors' Opel subsidiary in Europe designed a compact V6 engine with an unusual 54° vee angle. It was an iron block/aluminum head DOHC design with four valves per cylinder. All 54° engines were assembled at Ellesmere Port in England.
The BMW 3 Series Compact is a car which was produced from 1994 through 2004 by BMW. It is a 3-door hatchback version of the BMW 3 Series through two generations, for the E36 platform in 1993 and E46 platform in 2001. Unlike most hatchback competitors which were transverse engine front-wheel drive, the 3 Series Compact uses the longitudinal engine rear-wheel drive layout.
The BMW N46 is a naturally aspirated inline-four piston engines which replaced the BMW N42 and was produced from 2004 to 2015.
The Family II is a straight-4 piston engine that was originally developed by Opel in the 1970s, debuting in 1981. Available in a wide range of cubic capacities ranging from 1598 to 2405 cc, it simultaneously replaced the Opel CIH and Vauxhall Slant-4 engines, and was GM Europe's core mid-sized powerplant design for much of the 1980s, and provided the basis for the later Ecotec series of engines in the 1990s.
The BMW M60 is a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine which was produced from 1992 to 1996. It was BMW's first V8 engine in over 25 years.
