The BMW M60 is a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine which was produced from 1992 to 1996. It was BMW's first V8 engine in over 25 years.
The M60 was replaced by the BMW M62 engine.
During the 1970s, BMW produced a prototype V8 engine for the E23 7 Series, however this engine did not reach production. [1]
Development of the M60 began in 1984. [2]
The M60 engine has double overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder. [3] The camshaft is driven by a dual-row timing chain [4] with a self-adjusting tensioner. Valves had hydraulic lash adjustment to reduce maintenance. The ignition and fuel injection systems are controlled by the Bosch Motronic 3.3 system, and the ignition system is a coil-on-plug design with knock sensors. [5] [6]
To reduce weight, the engine uses aluminum for both the engine block and cylinder head, magnesium valve covers [7] and a plastic intake manifold. [2] The M60 was BMW's first car engine to use a "split conrod" design, [2] where sintered connecting rods are made as a single piece and then fractured in order to ensure increased rigidity and an exact fit. [4] The dry weight of the engine is between 175 kg (386 lb) and 203 kg (448 lb). [2] [7]

The M60B30 has a bore of 84 mm (3.31 in) and a stroke of 67.6 mm (2.66 in), [2] for a displacement of 2,997 cc (182.9 cu in). Compression ratio is 10.5:1, giving an output of 160 kW (215 bhp) at 5800 rpm and 290 N⋅m (214 lb⋅ft) at 4500 rpm. [8]
Applications:
The M60B40 has a bore of 89 mm (3.50 in) and a stroke of 80 mm (3.15 in), [4] for a total displacement of 3,982 cc (243.0 cu in). Compression ratio is 10.0:1, [4] giving 210 kW (282 bhp) at 5800 rpm and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) at 4500 rpm. [9] It had a forged crankshaft.
Applications:
Alpina produced a high compression (10.8:1) version of the M60B40 for the BMW Alpina B10 4.0 (based on the E34 5 Series) and the B11 4.0 (based on the E32 7 Series) [10] and in some B8 4.0 models (based on the E36 3 Series) produced for the Japanese market. [11] The M60 engine produced 234 kW (314 bhp) in the B10 4.0. [12]

The engine's displacement was later enlarged to 4,619 cc (281.9 cu in) for use in the B8 4.6 and B10 4.6. [13] [11] The power output is 253 kW (339 bhp) in the B10 4.6 and 248 kW (333 bhp) in the B8 4.6. [12] [11]
The M60 uses Nikasil- an alloy containing aluminium, nickel and silicon alloy- to line the cylinders bores. In fuels with high sulfur content (such as used fuels sold at the time in the United States, United Kingdom and South America), the sulfur damages the Nikasil bore lining, causing the engine to lose compression. [14] In the U.S. and U.K., sulfur rich fuel is being phased out. [15] [16]
BMW replaced engines under warranty and Nikasil was eventually replaced by Alusil. [14]
Nikasil engines are unlikely to be a problem today, as cars with affected engines are off the road or have received replacement engines. [17]
The BMW E34 is the third generation of the BMW 5 Series, which was produced from 2 November 1987, until 1996. Initially launched as a saloon in January 1988, the E34 also saw a "Touring" station wagon (estate) body style added in September 1992, a first for the 5 Series. BMW replaced the E34 with the E39 5 Series in December 1995, although E34 Touring models remained in production until June 1996.
The BMW M30 is a SOHC straight-six petrol engine which was produced from 1968 to 1995. With a production run of 27 years, it is BMW's longest produced engine and was used in many car models.
The BMW M20 is a SOHC straight-six petrol engine which was produced from 1977 to 1993. It was introduced eight years after the larger BMW M30 straight-six engine, which remained in production alongside the M20.
The BMW M50 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which was produced from 1990 to 1996. It was released in the E34 520i and 525i, to replace the M20 engine.
The BMW M52 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which was produced from 1994 to 2000. It was released in the E36 320i, to replace the M50. The BMW S52 engine is a high performance variant of the M52 which powered the American and Canadian market E36 M3 from 1996 to 1999.
The BMW M70 is a naturally-aspirated, SOHC, V12 petrol engine, which was BMW's first production V12 and was produced from 1987 to 1996. It was also the first German 12-cylinder post-war automobile engine, predating Mercedes-Benz's M120 by four years and VAG's W12 by fourteen.
BMW M62 is a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine which was produced from 1995 to 2005. A successor to the BMW M60, the M62 features an aluminium engine block and a single row timing chain.
The BMW S38 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which replaced the M88 and was produced from 1984–1995. The S38 was originally produced for North America as an equivalent to the M88 with slightly lower power output. In 1989, power output of the S38 was increased and it became the worldwide replacement for the M88.
The third generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E36, and was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1990 to 2000. The initial models were of the four-door saloon body style, followed by the coupé, convertible, wagon ("Touring"), and eventually hatchback ("Compact").
The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the BMW 5 Series range of executive cars, which was manufactured from 1995 to 2004. The BMW E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1994 until 2001. The E38 replaced the E32 7 Series and was produced with petrol and turbo-diesel straight-six and V8 engines, along with a petrol V12 flagship model. Three wheelbase lengths were available — short (i), long (iL) and Limousine (L7).
The BMW M54 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 DOHC petrol engine produced from 2000 to 2006. It was released in the E53 X5 and is the replacement for the M52 engine. The S54 is the equivalent high performance engine, used in the E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupé/Roadster and the E85/E86 Z4 M. The BMW M56 SULEV engine is based on the M54.
The BMW N62 is a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine which was used in BMW cars from 2001 to 2010. It also remained in small-scale production for the Morgan Aero until 2019. The N62 is the world's first engine to use a continuously variable-length intake manifold, and BMW's first V8 to feature variable valve lift.
The BMW M51 is an inline-6 cylinder Diesel engine produced by the Upper Austrian BMW plant in Steyr from July 1991 through February 2000. Its predecessor is the BMW M21, the successor is the BMW M57.
Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH & Co. KG is an automobile manufacturing company based in Buchloe, in the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, Germany that develops and sells high-performance versions of BMW cars. Alpina works closely with BMW and their processes are integrated into BMW's production lines, and is recognized by the German Ministry of Transport as an automobile manufacturer, in contrast to other performance specialists, which are aftermarket tuners. The Alpina B7 is produced at the same assembly line in Dingolfing, Germany, as BMW's own 7 Series. The B7's twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 is assembled by hand at Alpina's facility in Buchloe, Germany, before being shipped to BMW for installation, and the assembled vehicle is then sent back to Alpina for finishing touches.
The 420G is a 6-speed manual transmission manufactured by Getrag. It is designed for longitudinal engine applications and for use on engines producing up to 499 N⋅m (368 lb⋅ft) of torque.
The BMW N63 is a twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine which has been in production from 2008 to present. The N63 is the world's first production car engine to use a "hot-vee" layout, with the turbochargers located inside the "V" of the engine. It is also BMW's first turbocharged petrol V8 engine. The engine has been widely noted for its mechanical issues, undergoing several recalls.
5HP is ZF Friedrichshafen AG's trademark name for its 5-speed automatic transmission models for longitudinal engine applications, designed and built by ZF's subsidiary in Saarbrücken.
The ZF S5-31 transmission is a five-speed manual transmission by ZF Friedrichshafen. The transmission is designed for use in longitudinal engine applications. The transmission is rated for 310 Nm of torque. The transmission weighs ~39 kg, and holds 1.3 litres of transmission fluid.
