Babu Singh Maan, also known as Maan Maraarhan Wala, is an Indian songwriter/lyricist of Punjabi-language folk songs. [1] [2] He penned the first song of singer Kuldeep Manak's career. [1]

Early life

Maan was born on 10 October 1942, to father S. Inder Singh and mother Aas Kaur, in the village of Maraarh of Faridkot district in British Punjab. [2] [3] He got his primary education from the nearby village known as Jand Sahib and his poetry started publishing in children magazines while he was in just 6th standard. [4] He passed his graduation from Barjindra College, Faridkot.

Career

His song, duddh kahrh ke jaag na laavan, terian udeekan haania was published in a magazine by Kartar Singh Balaggan. [4] His first book, Geetan Da Wanjaara, was published in 1963. [2] His first recorded song was sung by singer Gurpal Singh Pal and later many famous singers like Harcharan Grewal, Surinder Kaur, Sukhwinder Singh, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Gurcharan Pohli, Harbhajan Maan, Babbu Maan [ citation needed ] and more have given voices to his songs. [2] He is the person to write the first song of singer Kuldeep Manak's career. [1] Most of his duets were sung by Muhammad Sadiq and Ranjit Kaur. He has also written songs for many films [4] including Nasibo and Sassi Punnu. [5] He is a versatile artist and touched on many important topics in his songs. Most of his songs speak about the village culture and relationships. [2] He has also written songs about the famous love stories of Punjab like Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiban, Sohni Mahiwal and Heroes of Punjabi folklores and history like Pooran Bhagat and Sucha Singh Soorma. [2] [4] Maan has also served as Sarpanch of his village 3 times.

Didar Sandhu was a noted Punjabi folk singer and songwriter from Punjab, India. He used to tie a turban on stage. He mostly sang duets with various noted Punjabi singers like Surinder Kaur and Amar Noorie.

Tejinder Singh "Babbu" Maan is an Indian singer-songwriter, music director, actor and film producer. Most of his artistic work focuses on Punjabi music and films. He is recognised as being among the biggest artists in Punjabi music.

Hardev Dilgir best known as Dev Tharike Wala, was an Indian lyricist. He is known for his hit kali, Tere Tille Ton, sung by Kuldeep Manak.

Kali, is a form of Chhand (quatrain), a poetry bond under strict rules in Punjabi literature. Kali chhand is also used in singing as a type of Punjabi folk song where it is also known by its plural form, Kalian or Kaliyan. Although it is not so common in singing, it became a particular genre of Punjabi music. Kali is sung by only few Punjabi singers like Kuldeep Manak, Surinder Shinda and some more, but it was popularized by Kuldeep Manak with Tere Tille Ton written by Dev Tharike Wala.

Muhammad Sadiq is a Punjabi-language singer, actor and politician from Punjab, India. He is best known for his duets with singer Ranjit Kaur. He is the current Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha for Faridkot, Punjab constituency. He was the Congress party MLA from Bhadaur in Punjab from 2012 to 2017.

Karnail Singh Paras was a Shiromani Kavishar award-winning Kavishar of Indian Punjab. He is the father of former union minister and Samajwadi Party politician Balwant Singh Ramoowalia and Canada based writer Iqbal Singh Ramoowalia. One of his granddaughters is married to famous Punjabi singer and actor Harbhajan Maan.

Deepak Jaitoi, also spelled as Deepak Jatoi, was a Punjabi Ghazal-writer as well as songwriter. He worked for Punjabi for about six decades of his life.

Narinder Biba Musical artist

Narinder Biba was a very well known Punjabi singer from Punjab, India. She is known for singing Punjabi folklores, love romances of Punjab like Mirza Sahiban, Sassi Punnun and Sikh historical moments like Saka Sirhind and many more.

Sassi Punnu is a 1983 Indian Punjabi-language film, directed by Satish Bhakhri, starring Satish Kaul and Bhavana Bhatt. It is based on the folktale of Sassi Punnu.

Gurmel Singh Dhillon was an Indian songwriter and lyricist of Panjabi music. As was the trend then, he wrote mostly duets. While many of the then well-known Punjabi singers sang his songs, the Muhammad Sadiq-Ranjit Kaur duo sung the most number of his songs.

Kuldeep Singh, better known as K. Deep, was an Indian singer of Punjabi-language folk songs and duets. He sang most of the duets with his wife, singer Jagmohan Kaur. The duo is known for their comedy characters Mai Mohno and Posti. Poodna is another notable song by the duo. He was the first to sing songs penned by Shiv Kumar Batalvi. In 2010, he got PTC Life Time Achievement Award, along with Babu Singh Maan, which was presented to him by Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan.

Harcharan Garewal was an Indian singer of Punjabi-language folk songs and duets. He is known for his songs like Tota Pee Gia Bullan Di Laali, and duets with Surinder Kaur like Lakk Hille Majajan Jaandi Da, Main Vi Jatt Ludhiane Da, Aa Gia Wanjara Ni Charha Lai Bhabi Churhian and with Seema like Mittran De Tubewell 'te. Many Punjabi singers used to accompany him on stage with music instruments or so before releasing their own records including Kuldeep Manak.

Nachhatar Singh Chhatta, commonly known by his stage name Nachhatar Chhatta, was a popular Punjabi singer.

Vicky Dhaliwal Indian song-writer

Tarandeep Singh Dhaliwal, known professionally as Vicky Dhaliwal is an Indian-Punjabi lyricist, singer and former Kabaddi player. He rose to fame after release of "Diamond" by Gurnam Bhullar. He had played Kabaddi at national level but left due to injury in his shoulder. In September 2020, Dhaliwal released his debut single "1.5 Lakh", featuring Gurlez Akhtar.
