The Bachchan family is a prominent Indian family associated with and involved in the Hindi film industry and Indian politics.

Notable members of the family include actor and former politician Amitabh Bachchan, his wife, actress and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan; his parents, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan; their daughter, author Shweta Bachchan Nanda; their son, actor Abhishek Bachchan; and Abhishek's wife, actress Aishwarya Rai. In 2007, Time listed Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai on its list of most influential Indians. [1]

Overview

The Bachchan family are Indian Awadhi Hindu Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas fluent in several Hindustani languages (Awadhi, Hindi, Urdu) as well as Persian. [2] The family also has Punjabi ethnic roots through patriarch Amitabh's mother Teji Bachchan (née Suri) from Lyallpur (in present-day Pakistan) and Bengali ethnic roots through Amitabh's wife, Jaya (née Bhaduri). The Bachchan family also is connected to the Mangalore region of South India through Amitabh's daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who hails from the Tulu speaking Bunt community.

The family has two houses, Jalsa and Pratiksha, in Mumbai and resides in Jalsa. [3]

The Kapoor family is a prominent Indian show business family with at least 4 generations of the family over 95 years being active in the Hindi film industry. Numerous members of the family, both (biological) and those who have married into the family, have had prolific careers as actors, film directors and producers. "The Pioneer" founder of the dynasty was "The Patriarch", Prithviraj Kapoor, who was the first member of family to begin acting in movies with his 1929 debut film Be Dhari Talwar. Harivansh Rai Bachchan was an Indian poet and writer of the Nayi Kavita literary movement of early 20th century Hindi literature. He was also a poet of the Hindi Kavi Sammelan. He is best known for his early work Madhushala. He was the father of Amitabh Bachchan, and grandfather of Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. His wife Teji Bachchan was a social activist. In 1976, he received the Padma Bhushan for his service to Hindi literature.

The Awadhi people or Awadhis are an Indo-Aryan ethno-linguistic group who speak the Awadhi language and reside in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. Many Awadhis also migrated to Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha in India and some adjoining regions of the Terai in Nepal, and in addition 3 per cent of Nepalis are Awadhi speakers.
