Bad Rats: The Rats' Revenge is a 2009 puzzle video game developed by Invent4 Entertainment. Over a string of levels, the player places a set of rats and static objects to guide a ball towards a trap that kills a cat. Bad Rats was released as Invent4 Entertainment's debut game on 20 July 2009 via Steam, followed by releases on other services in 2010. While it received no reviews at release, retrospective pieces criticised the game's graphics, puzzles, and physics. Bad Rats is considered an oddity for being released on Steam while the platform's catalogue was still hand-curated. It became a popular gag gift on Steam, leading to more than 400,000 owners by 2018. A sequel, Bad Rats Show, was released on the seventh anniversary of Bad Rats in 2016.

Bad Rats is a physics-based puzzle video game in a similar style to The Incredible Machine and Armadillo Run . In each level, the player is tasked with arranging (by moving and rotating) a set of rats and static objects in a way that steers a ball towards a trap. The ball's touch causes the trap to activate, killing the nearby cat. The game offers a tutorial and two modes: In the "Easy" mode, the inventory is limited and the solution to each level can be displayed. The "Expert" mode provides the entire inventory, including all ten kinds of rats, and no solutions. Hints for each level are available in both modes. [1]

Development and release

Bad Rats was developed by Invent4 Entertainment, an indie game studio based in Porto Alegre. [2] [3] It was the company's first game, after it was founded by Augusto Bülow on 4 April 2009. [3] [4] Bülow provided the concept for the game and acted as its programmer and level designer. [2] [5] Carlos Alberto Kunkel Bülow designed the 3D models and their animations, while graffiti imagery was provided by Mateus "Mes" Silva Brum. Additional art was created by Gustavo Bülow, and music and sound design done by Márcio Stein. [5]

A demo of Bad Rats was released through Invent4 Entertainment's website on 20 May 2009. This demo was downloaded more than 20,000 times by August that year, and an updated version was published in November. Bad Rats was released via Steam on 20 July 2009. It was made available through Invent4 Entertainment's website in January 2010, as well as GamersGate and Direct2Drive in February 2010. In April that year, the company announced partnerships that would see Bad Rats (and future games) released by Strategy First in North America, by Akella in Russia, and by Micromedia in the Netherlands. Bad Rats received no reviews indexed by the review aggregator website Metacritic. [6] In a 2015 retrospective, Nathan Grayson of Kotaku stated that the game remained the worst game available on Steam. In particular, he criticised the game's "shoddy" puzzles and "inconsistent" physics. [7] This sentiment was echoed by Max Scoville and Brian Altano of IGN later that year. [8] In 2018, Adam Heron of Hardcore Gaming 101 described Bad Rats as "possibly ... the worst physics-based puzzle game of all time". He criticised the "hideous, grungy urban art direction" and its low-quality textures, and described the improper physics as the game's "fatal flaw", especially due to the randomness applied to scenarios Heron believed should be static. He further faulted the game's user interface, which he considered unfriendly and unintuitive. [1] Richard Cobbett and Wes Fenlon of PC Gamer included the cover art of Bad Rats in their list of the "worst PC game box art ever", calling that of Bad Rats a "monstrosity". [9]


According to Grayson, Bad Rats was an oddity on Steam when it was released, as the platform's catalogue was still hand-curated by its owner, Valve, before the launch of the Steam Greenlight programme in 2012. [1] [2] Augusto Bülow stated that Bad Rats only became popular several years following its release, after negative reviews by popular YouTubers turned attention toward the game. [2] Bad Rats became an internet meme and was frequently used as a gag gift by Steam users. [1] [7] [10] Many users penned sarcastic positive reviews, resulting in an on-average positive review score for the game. [7] [11] In a 2016 interview, Bülow said that he was happy with this situation, saying that, because Bad Rats had been "planned to be funny", "If people are laughing while playing the game, that's fine. The game reached its objectives." [2] In July 2018, based on leaked Steam player counts, Bad Rats was estimated to have 476,787 unique players on the platform. [12]

According to Bülow, a sequel to Bad Rats was planned from the outset, originally with the intent to include dogs alongside cats. [2] A second Bad Rats game was teased through videos, starting in December 2014. [7] This sequel was announced as Bad Rats Show in a trailer during E3 2016. [13] It was released on 20 July 2016, the seventh anniversary of Bad Rats. [10] An in-development mobile version of Bad Rats, designated the Pocket Edition, was shown off by Bülow in September 2017. Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is a 2003 racing video game developed by Stellar Stone and published by GameMill Publishing. The player controls a semi-trailer truck and races a stationary opponent through checkpoints on US truck routes. Stellar Stone, based in California, outsourced the game's development to Ukraine, and the game was released on November 20, 2003. Due to a multitude of bugs and lack of proper gameplay, Big Rigs was received very negatively, became the worst-rated game on review aggregator websites Metacritic and GameRankings, and has been frequently cited as one of the worst video games of all time by gaming publications. The game has also attracted a cult following since its release.

Deponia is a point-and-click adventure, developed and published by Daedalic Entertainment. The game's story sees players taking on the role of Rufus, an inhabitant of the junk planet Deponia, as he attempts to seek a new life on the floating city known as Elysium. However, he soon becomes embroiled with the task of helping an Elysian return to their home and uncovers a plot that threatens his home planet.

Rust is a multiplayer-only survival video game developed by Facepunch Studios. Rust was first released in early access in December 2013 and received its full release in February 2018. Rust is available on Microsoft Windows and macOS. Console versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been announced for release in 2021. Rust was initially created as a clone of DayZ, a popular mod for ARMA 2, with crafting elements akin to those in Minecraft.

Undertale is a role-playing video game created by indie developer Toby Fox. The player controls a child who has fallen into the Underground: a large, secluded region under the surface of the Earth, separated by a magic barrier. The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface. Some monsters might engage the player in a fight. The combat system involves the player navigating through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. They can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them. These choices affect the game, with the dialogue, characters, and story changing based on outcomes.

<i>OneShot</i> 2016 indie puzzle/adventure video game with metafictional elements

OneShot is a puzzle and adventure indie game developed by Future Cat and published by Degica. Based on a 2014 free version, it was released for Steam on December 8, 2016 and on on March 12, 2020. The game is centered around metafictional concepts, which have been described by the developers as "the world knows you exist". This affects its story, which depicts the player as a separate character from Niko, the protagonist. Both characters arrive in an unfamiliar world, and aim to replace its sun at the top of a tower. OneShot received largely positive reviews, most of which focused on its narrative aspects.

<i>Ravenfield</i> (video game)

Ravenfield is a first-person shooter game developed by Swedish programmer Johan Hassel, who goes by the pseudonym SteelRaven7. It was released on 18 May 2017 as an early access title for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Teardown is an upcoming sandbox, puzzle and action game developed and published by Tuxedo Labs. The game features levels made entirely of destructible voxels. Each mission features a set of objectives to be completed within one minute. During the setup phase, which has no time limit, a path to complete these objectives as quickly as possible can be created by reshaping the game world.
