Badri Nath Tandon (born 1931) is an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, medical researcher and academic, and the Chairman and Senior Consultant of Gastroenterology, at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. [1] He is a former Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition Unit at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and a former Director and Senior Consultant of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases, New Delhi. [2] He is a recipient of several awards including Sasakawa WHO Health Prize and Jubilee Medal of the RAMS. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1986, for his contributions to medicine. [3]
Badri Nath Tandon, born on 1 August 1931 [4] in a Khatri family, [5] graduated in medicine (MBBS) from King George Medical College, Lucknow and secured his post-graduate degree (MD) from the same institution. [2] Subsequently, he joined Harvard Medical School, Boston for advanced training in gastroenterology followed by training in Nutrition Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. [2] He started his career at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1962 as a member of faculty where he stayed till 1991. It was during this period he founded the Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS, serving the department as its head and as a Professor at the Human Nutrition Unit till his superannuation from AIIMS service on 31 August 1991. [6] In 1993, he shifted to Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases, New Delhi as its director and senior consultant and served the institution till 2000 when he moved to Metro Group of Hospitals, Noida as its chairman, a post he holds till date. [2]
Tandon was associated with several medical and socio-medical initiatives. When the Integrated Child Development Services (Anganwadi) scheme was introduced in India, with assistance from UNICEF, in 1975, he chaired the technical committee of the program from inception till 1995. [7] He served as the chairman of the Task Force of Liver Diseases initiated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and is the incumbent chair of the Digestive Diseases Foundation of India and the Digestive Diseases Research Foundation. [4] He has been the president of such societies as International Association of Liver Diseases, Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver, Indian Society of Gastroenterology [8] and Nutrition Society of India (1995–99) [9] and the vice-president of the World Gastroenterology Organisation. Tandon is known to have conducted pioneering research on bowel diseases, effects of malnutrition on intestine, pancreas and liver and the role of pathogens and food toxins in various diseases. [2] His work on veno-occlusive disease of the liver helped in the discovery that pyrrolizidine alkaloids present in the Jhunjhunia seeds could cause the disease. [10] He is also credited with the isolation of Hepatitis E virus and the introduction of a new therapeutic protocol of the Hepatitis E as well as Hepatitis C using herbal plants. [2] His researches have been documented in over 225 medical papers and four monographs. [11] [12] [13] He has also published two text books, Textbook Of Tropical Gastroenterology, [14] and Tropical Hepato-Gastroenterology, [15] and has contributed 13 chapters to text books written by others. [2] Besides being the founder editor of Tropical Gastroenterology journal, [16] he also sits in the editorial boards of several national and international journals; National Medical Journal, Ceylon Medical Journal, Asian Pacific Journal of Gastroentrology and Hepatology, Hepatology Communication, European Journal of Hepatology, Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology International counting among them. Tandon is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, elected to the position in 1974. [17] He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicines and the Indian Public Health Association. [1] The Government of India awarded him the civilian honor of the Padma Bhushan in 1986. [3] He received the Sasakawa WHO Health Prize of the World Health Organization in 1990 and the Jubilee Medal of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 1995. [18] He has delivered several award orations such as Dr. R.V. Rajam Oration (1983–84) of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, [17] and is also a recipient of Kent Memorial Award of the National Homoeopathic Association (1998), Lifetime Achievement Award of the New Delhi chapter of the Indian Medical Association (2004) and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award of Indian society of Gastroenterology (2007). He died on 23 May 2020 during sleep when he was home quarantined due to COVID-19 positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic in India, in New Delhi.

He is a former member of the faculty at the Cambridge University, London University and Harvard University, and is the founder editor of the National Medical Journal of India and Tropical Gastroenterology. The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1985.
Surinder Kumar Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.
Randhir Sud, an Indian gastroenterologist and the Chairman of the Medanta Institute of Digestive and Hepatobiliary Sciences, is known to be one of the pioneers of Gastro Intestinal oncology in India. He is a former co-chairman of the department of gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
Kewal Kishan Talwar is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic and writer, and a former chairman of the Medical Council of India. He is a former director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and is reported to have performed the first implantation of Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in South Asia. He is also credited with the introduction of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in India. He is a recipient of several honours including B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to medicine. Shiv Kumar Sarin is an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, translational scientist, researcher and teacher. He set up the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and the Padma Bhushan. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of Medical Council of India. He was the president of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver and founder of Asian Pacific School of Hepatology.
Narinder Kumar Mehra is an Indian immunologist, head of the department of transplant immunology and immunogenetics of the SRL Limited, Gurgaon. He is a former dean of research and holds the ICMR Dr. C.G. Pandit National Chair at AIIMS. An elected fellow of the International Medical Sciences Academy, The World Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India, Mehra is known for his research on histocompatibility and immunogenetics. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 1992. He received the Chevalier of the National Order of Merit from François Mitterrand in 2003.

Known for his studies on Gastrointestinal diseases, Liver diseases, and Viral Hepatitis, Aggarwal is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies, namely National Academy of Sciences, India, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy, and of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2002.
Vinod Kumar Paul is an Indian pediatrician and physician scientist currently serving as Member, NITI Aayog. He earlier served as Professor of Neonatology at the Department of Pediatrics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi from 1985 to 2020. He is associated with India's health policy as well as child and maternal health programs.
