2006 New Jersey state government shutdown

The 2006 New Jersey state government shutdown was the first shutdown in the history of the U.S. state of New Jersey. The shutdown occurred after the New Jersey Legislature and Governor Jon Corzine failed to agree on a state budget by the constitutional deadline. Furthermore, Corzine and the Legislature clashed on the issue of raising the state sales tax to help balance budget. Exercising his constitutional powers as governor, Corzine ordered the shutdown as a means of pressuring the Legislature to pass a budget. The shutdown began at midnight on July 1, 2006, when Corzine called for an orderly shutdown of non-essential government services, which was followed by a second round of shutdowns three days later on July 4.

Samuel Rosborough Balcom was a Canadian politician, businessman and pharmacist. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a 19 June 1950 by-election as a Member of the Liberal Party representing the riding of Halifax, after Isnor was called to the Senate. He was re-elected in 1953 and defeated in 1957. Prior to his federal political experience, he was a commanding officer in medical stores during World War II between 1942 and 1942. Between 1944 and 1945, he was Chief Medical Stores Inspection Officer in the Canadian Army.

Balcom and Vaughan Pipe Organs Inc. is the oldest pipe organ builder in the greater northwest. The company was founded in 1921 by C.M “Sandy” Balcom, who had previously worked for another organ builder, Sherman, Clay & Co. At the end of the silent film era, Balcom and Vaughan began to focus more on building or altering church instruments. Organs bearing Balcom’s design influence were often small, unit organs, sometimes consisting of only three manuals. These projects commonly contained an amount of old pipe work or components from (redundant or altered instruments. As tastes began to lean toward European-based designs, Eugene “Gene” Nye was influential in revisioning Balcom and Vaughan instruments of the 1960s to respond to those tastes.
