Bamberg County is a county located in the southwestern portion of U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,311, making the rural county the fourth-least populous of any in South Carolina. Its county seat is Bamberg.

The highway is designated on a north–south direction, but physically travels in an east–west direction, from SC 30 in Charleston to U.S. Route 78 (US 78) near Branchville. Woodlands, or the William Gilmore Simms Estate, is a historic plantation estate in Bamberg County, South Carolina. The property is nationally notable as the home for many years of author William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870), considered one of the leading literary voices of the antebellum Southern United States, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971. The main house, built in part by Simms, contains mementos from his period.

Bamberg City Hall, located in Bamberg, South Carolina is a municipal city hall. It is an example of the type of early twentieth-century style of governmental building designed by the Anderson, South Carolina firm of Sayre and Baldwin. A number of architectural details of this three-story brick and cast stone building are also noteworthy. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 28, 2004.

General Francis Marion Bamberg (1838–1905), the builder of the General Francis Marion Bamberg House, played an important role in the growth of the town and county of Bamberg, South Carolina. Among other accomplishments, General Bamberg promoted the educational, religious, economic and cultural growth of the town of Bamberg, gave a library and gymnasium to the Carlisle Fitting School, and significant sums for the construction of a Methodist church. The house, located in one of Bamberg's oldest residential areas, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 29, 1976.

Rivers Bridge State Historic Site, also known as Rivers Bridge State Park, located near Ehrhardt, a small town in Bamberg County, South Carolina, is the site of an important Civil War battle. It is in this area that General William T. Sherman engaged the Confederate Army on his advance from Savannah, and after two days of battle, outflanked the Confederates and forced them to withdraw. River Bridge State Park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1972.
The Cal Smoak Site, located in Bamberg County, South Carolina, is the remains of an old farmstead. It is situated on a ridge that overlooks the Edisto Swamp and one of its small tributaries, Brier Creek. The (restricted) area is important because it is culturally stratified to a depth of about 30 inches, thus having the potential of providing important chronological data. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 6, 1986.
