This woreda was originally named Debre Berhan Zuria ("Greater Debre Berhan"), the name used in the 1994 national census, but it was changed before the Ethiopian Agricultural Sample Survey in October 2001, which used the present name.
The Battle of Segale was fought on 27 October 1916 in this woreda. In this battle, the supporters of Lij Iyasu of Ethiopia were defeated, which secured the outcome of the palace coup the previous month, in which Zewditu had been proclaimed Empress.
Demographics
Based on the 2007 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), this woreda has a total population of 120,930, an increase of 7.81% over the 1994 census, of whom 61,924 are men and 59,006 women; 1,219 or 1.01% are urban inhabitants. With an area of 1,208.17 square kilometers, Basona Werana has a population density of 100.09, which is less than the Zone average of 115.3 persons per square kilometer. A total of 27,753 households were counted in this woreda, resulting in an average of 4.36 persons to a household, and 26,918 housing units. The majority of the inhabitants practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, with 99.93% reporting that as their religion.[2]
The 1994 national census reported a total population for this woreda of 112,173 in 24,307 households, of whom 56,868 were men and 55,305 were women; the census reported no urban dwellers. The largest ethnic group reported in Basona Werana was the Amhara (99.46%), and Amharic was spoken as a first language by 99.33%. The majority of the inhabitants practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, with 99.96% reporting that as their religion.[3]
Gidan is a woreda in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Tenta is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Part of the Debub Wollo Zone, Tenta is bordered on the south by Legambo, on the southwest by Sayint, on the west by Magdala, on the north by the Bashilo River which separates it from Semien Wollo Zone, on the northeast by Ambassel, on the east by Kutaber and on the southeast by Dessie Zuria. The administrative center of this woreda is Ajebar; other towns in Tenta include Amba Mariam, and Tenta.
Tehuledere is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Located at the eastern edge of the Ethiopian highlands in the Debub Wollo Zone, Tehuledere is bordered on the south by Dessie Zuria, on the southwest by Kutaber, on the northwest and the north by the Mille River, on the northeast by Were Babu, and on the southeast by Kalu; the Mille separates Tehuledere from Amba Sel to the northwest and the Semien Wollo Zone to the north. Kalu also known as Harbu is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Debub Wollo Zone, Kalu is bordered on the west by Dessie Zuria, on the north by Were Babu, on the south and east by the Oromia Zone, on the southeast by Argobba special woreda, and on the southwest by Abuko. The administrative center for this woreda is Harbu; other towns in Kalu include Ancharo, Gerba, and Degan. A highway linking Kombolcha and Afar bisects Kalu to two parts.

It is named in part after the historic Shewan district of Minjar, which was the southernmost district of Shewa and near the location of the modern woreda. Located at the southern end of the Semien Shewa Zone, Minjarna Shenkora is bordered on the east, south and west by the Oromia Region, on the northwest by Hagere Mariamna Kesem, and on the northeast by Berehet; the Germama river forms the boundary between this woreda and Hagere Mariamna Kesem and Berehet. The administrative center of this woreda is Arerti; other towns in the woreda include Balchi and Eranbuti.

Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Yilmana Densa is bordered on the south by Kuarit, on the southwest by Sekela, on the west by Mecha, on the north by Bahir Dar Zuria, on the east by the Abay River which separates it from the Debub Gondar Zone, and on the southeast by the Misraq Gojjam Zone. The major town in Yilmana Densa is Adet.
Dembecha Zuria is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Dembecha is bordered on the west by Bure, on the northwest by Jabi Tehnan, on the north by Dega Damot, and on the east and south by the Misraq Gojjam Zone.
