Demographics
Based on the 2007 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), this woreda has a total population of 292,080, an increase of 36.55% over the 1994 census, of whom 147,611 are men and 144,469 women; 22,677 or 7.76% are urban inhabitants. With an area of 1,481.64 square kilometers, Mecha has a population density of 197.13, which is greater than the Zone average of 158.25 persons per square kilometer. A total of 66,107 households were counted in this woreda, resulting in an average of 4.42 persons to a household, and 64,206 housing units. The majority of the inhabitants practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, with 98.91% reporting that as their religion. [3]
The 1994 national census reported a total population for this woreda of 244,943 in 49,098 households, of whom 123,646 were men and 121,297 were women; 12,278 or 5.01% of its population were urban dwellers. The largest ethnic group reported in Merawi was the Amhara (99.91%). Amharic was spoken as a first language by 99.96%. The majority of the inhabitants practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, with 98.84% reporting that as their religion, while 1.09% were Muslim. [4]
Hulet Ej Enese is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, it is bordered on the south by Debay Telatgen, on the west by Bibugn and Goncha, on the northwest by the Mirab Gojjam Zone, on the north by the Abay River, on the east by Goncha Siso Enese, and on the southeast by Enarj Enawga. Among the towns in this administrative division are Keraniyo, Mota and Sede.
Simada is a woreda in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Debub Gondar Zone, Simada is bordered on the southeast by the Bashilo River which separates it from the Debub Wollo Zone, on the southwest by the Abay River which separates it from the Misraq Gojjam Zone, on the west by Misraq Este, on the north by Lay Gayint, and on the northeast by Tach Gayint. Part of this woreda's boundary with Este is defined by the Wanka, a tributary of the Abay. The major town in Simada is Wegeda.
Debre Sina, now Borena Sayint is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Part of the Debub Wollo Zone, Debre Sina is bordered on the south by Wegde, on the west by the Abbay River which separates it from the Misraq Gojjam Zone, on the north by Mehal Sayint, on the northeast by Sayint, and on the east by Legambo. The administrative center is Mekane Selam; other towns in Debre Sina include Amsale Genet.
Wegde is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Debub Wollo Zone, Wegde is bordered on the south by the Walaqa River which separates it from the Oromia Region, on the west by the Abay River which separates it from the Misraq Gojjam Zone, on the north by Debre Sina, on the northeast by Legambo, and on the east by Kelala. The major town in Wegde is Mahdere Selam.
Goncha Siso Enese is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone. It has 2 town and 41 rural kebeles. Goncha Siso Enese is bordered on the south by Enarj Enawga, on the west by Hulet Ej Enese, on the north by the Abay River which separates it from the Debub Gondar Zone, and on the east by Enbise Sar Midir. The major town in Goncha Siso Enese is Ginde Weyin.
Enebise Sar Midir is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. This woreda is named in part after the historic district of Enebise, which was first mentioned in the 16th century. Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, Enbise Sar Midir is bordered on the south by Enarj Enawga, on the west by Goncha Siso Enese, and on the north and east by Abay River which separates it from the Debub Gondar Zone and Debub Wollo Zone. The administrative center of this woreda is Mertule Mariam; other towns in Enbise Sar Midir include Dibo.
Gozamn is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the East Gojjam Zone, Guzamn is bordered on the southeast by Baso Liben, on the south by the Abay River which separates it from the Oromia Region, on the west by Debre Elias, on the northwest by Machakel, on the north by Sinan, and on the east by Aneded; the Chamwaga River defines part of the border between the Guzamn and Baso Liben woredas. The town and woreda of Debre Marqos is an enclave inside Guzamn. Towns in Guzamn include Chemoga and Yebokile. Sinan woreda was separate from Guzamn.
Baso Liben is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. A triangular-shaped district at the southernmost point of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, Baso Liben is bordered on the south by a bend of the Blue Nile river which separates it from the Oromia Region, on the northwest by the Chamwaga river which separates it from Gozamn, and on the northeast by Aneded. The major town in Baso Liben is Yejube.
Awabel is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, Awabel is bordered on the south by the Abay River which separates it from the Oromia Region, on the west by Aneded, on the northwest by Sinan, on the northeast by Debay Telatgen, and on the east by Dejen. Towns in Awabel include Lumame and Wejel. The woreda of Aneded was separated from Awabel.
Shebel Berenta is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia, named after two older districts which occupy the area this woreda currently covers: Berenta which is north of the Mecha river, and Shebel which is south of that stream. Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, Shebel Berenta is bordered on the southwest by Dejen, on the northwest by Enemay, on the north by Enarj Enawga, and on the east by the Abay River which separates it from the Oromia Region. The major town in Shebel Berenta is Yed Wuha.
Achefer was a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. It was named for the historic district of Achefer, which was first mentioned in the 16th century. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Achefer was bordered on the south by the Agew Awi Zone, on the west by the Semien Gondar Zone, on the north by Lake Tana, on the northeast by Bahir Dar Zuria, and on the southeast by Merawi; the Lesser Abay River defined the woreda's eastern boundary. The woreda included Dek Island. The administrative center was Yesmala; other towns in Achefer included Durbete, Liben, Kunzela, Chiba and Wandege. Acheref was divided for Debub Achefer and Semien Achefer woredas.
Bahir Dar Zuria is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, this woreda is bordered on the south by Yilmana Densa, on the southwest by Mecha, on the northwest by the Gilgel Abay River which separates it from Semien Achefer, on the north by Lake Tana, on the shores of Lake Tana situates the city and special zone of Bahir Dar, and on the east by the Abay River which separates it from the Debub Gondar Zone.
Yilmana Densa is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Yilmana Densa is bordered on the south by Kuarit, on the southwest by Sekela, on the west by Mecha, on the north by Bahir Dar Zuria, on the east by the Abay River which separates it from the Debub Gondar Zone, and on the southeast by the Misraq Gojjam Zone. The major town in Yilmana Densa is Adet.
Sekela is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the West Gojjam Zone, Sekela is bordered on the southwest by Bure, on the west by the Agew Awi Zone, on the north by Mecha, on the northeast by Yilmana Densa, on the east by Kuarit, and on the southeast by Jabi Tehnan. The administrative center of Sekela is Gish Abay.
Quarit is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Quarit is bordered on the southwest by Jabi Tehnan, on the west by Sekela, on the north by Yilmana Densa, on the east by the Misraq Gojjam Zone, and on the southeast by Dega Damot. The major town in Quarit is Gebeze Mariam. Goncha woreda was separated from Quarit.
Dega Damot is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Dega Damot is bordered on the south by Dembecha, on the southwest by Jabi Tehnan, on the west by Kuarit, and on the north and east by the Misraq Gojjam Zone. The major town in Dega Damot is Feres Bet.
Dembecha Zuria is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Dembecha is bordered on the west by Bure, on the northwest by Jabi Tehnan, on the north by Dega Damot, and on the east and south by the Misraq Gojjam Zone. Towns in Dembecha include Addis Alem, Dembecha and Yechereka.
Guangua is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Agew Awi Zone, Guangua is bordered on the south and west by the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, on the north by Dangila, on the northwest by Faggeta Lekoma and Banja Shekudad, and on the east by Ankasha Guagusa; the Dura River, a tributary of the Abay River, defines part of its western border. The administrative center of this woreda is Chagni; other towns in Guangua include Kilaj, and Menta Wuha.
Debub Achefer or South Acheref, is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. It is named for the historic district of Achefer, which was first mentioned in the 16th century. Part of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, Achefer is bordered on the south and west by the Agew Awi Zone, on the north by Semien Acheref, and on the east by Mecha; the Lesser Abay River defines the woreda's eastern boundary. The administrative center is Durbete. Debub Acheref was part of former Acherfer woreda.the woreda is geographical platform also very wonder full for practicing Agriculture and animal's product. Especially maize cropping is almost critical production line. But there is limited road access to harvest animal production, due to it needs short period of time to reach the market !!
Merawi is a city administration located 30 kilometers south of Bahir Dar, Amhara Region's capital in north-western Ethiopia, in what was previously Bahir Dar Awraja of Gojjam province. The town also hosts the seat of Mecha Woreda administration.
