"Before I Let Go" is a song performed by American R&B band Maze, issued as the second single from the band's fifth album and first live album Live in New Orleans . Although Live in New Orleans is a live album, "Before I Let Go" appears on the album as a studio recording. [4] Written and produced by lead singer Frankie Beverly, [2] [3] the song peaked at #13 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1981. [5]

Beyoncé covered the song for her 2019 film Homecoming , and it's the focus of a 2021 episode of Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris's New York Times podcast, Still Processing . [6]

Beyoncé covered the song for her 2019 film Homecoming , and included the cover on the accompanying live album. It also includes a sample of New Orleans bounce artist, DJ Jubilee, one of the pioneers of bounce music, recorded on Take Fo' Records. An interpolation of "Candy" by Cameo also runs throughout the song.

Beverly told Billboard that the cover was "one of the high points of (his) life... in a class of its own" and made him "feel bigger than ever! I feel like I have a huge smash out there." [7]

Take Fo' Records is an independent record label from New Orleans and the first to specialize in bounce music. The label is a subsidiary of Positive Black Talk, Inc., was founded in 1992 and operated by creative duo Earl J. Mackie and Henry F. Holden, until 2005. Prior to creating the record label, the duo teamed up to produce a cable access television program called Positive Black Talk, aiming at positive African American leadership in the New Orleans community. The television show changed its name to PBT and was later hosted by Mackie's younger cousin, Anthony Mackie, who was a student at NOCCA at the time. "It was just a 15-year-old black dude acting a fool," Anthony says of the early endeavor. After holding a fundraising concert for the program, Earl Mackie and Holden became intrigued by the music industry, so they decided to put together a girl group called Da' Sha Ra'. The newly formed group appeared frequently on the television program.

Homecoming: The Live Album is the fifth live album by American singer-songwriter Beyoncé, released on April 17, 2019. Recorded in April 2018 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, the album features the entirety of Beyoncé's performance at the festival, which has since been described as "historic" by a number of music critics and media outlets. Two bonus studio tracks – a cover of Maze's song "Before I Let Go" and "I Been On" – follow the live recording, bringing the album's length to just short of two hours.
