Following the passing of his father and MP, Vijay Kumar Khandelwal, Hemant Khandelwal succeeded him as the MP from Betul in the by-elections of 2008. He was later elected as MLA from Betul in 2013 and served his full term till 2018. Post this he was again elected as MLA in 2023 and is currently serving the people of his constituency in his capacity as MLA.
