BiennaleOnline is an online exhibition of contemporary art. [1] The exhibition aims to focus on the most promising emerging visual artists worldwide, presenting works in New Media, Installation, Traditional Media, Photography and Performance. These artists will come from Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and the Middle East, and have been selected by 29 leading international curators. [2] [3] [4]
The inaugural exhibition launched on April 26, 2013, and is called "Reflection & Imagination" with Jan Hoet † serving as the artistic director. [2] [5] [6]
BiennaleOnline was founded by David Dehaeck, Nathalie Haveman and Arthur Madna in 2012. The exhibition was set to be launched in September 2012, however it was moved to April 2013. [7] The exhibition is organized by ARTPLUS, a mobile exhibition platform for art lovers and collectors of contemporary art. [8] [9]
The first BiennaleOnline is directed by Jan Hoet. Hoet previously served as the artistic director of Documenta IX and the museum MARTa Herford, Germany, and was a founder of SMAK in Ghent, Belgium. 25 artists, which are carefully chosen by Hoet, will be represented in the center section of the exhibition called "Reflection & Imagination". [8] [10] Jan Hoet died in a hospital in Ghent on February 27, 2014.
BiennaleOnline is the first of its kind, curated, exclusively online biennial exhibition of contemporary art. [9] 29 Leading international curators select the 183 most promising artists at a critical moment, when they are poised to become established artists. [9] BiennaleOnline aimes to offer an exhibition which breaks away from the conventional notion of Art as an elite pastime, confined to faraway galleries and those with the leisure and funds to enjoy it.
BiennaleOnline started with a "Pay What You want" payment wall. The founders very soon noticed that it was blocking visitors from entering the exhibition. In the best interest of the artists it was decided in May 2012 to remove the payment wall to ensure maximum exposure of their works. Soon after the removal of the payment wall the number of visitors surged to 400.000 within 1 year after opening.

In the art world, a Biennale, Italian for "biennial" or "every other year", is a large-scale international contemporary art exhibition. The term was popularised by the Venice Biennale, which was first held in 1895, but the concept of such a large scale, and intentionally international event goes back to at least the 1851 Great Exhibition in London.
Wim Delvoye is a Belgian neo-conceptual artist widely recognized for combining in his inventive and often shocking projects philosophical ideas, innovative use of materials, and a passion for craftsmanship. He blurs the boundaries between traditional art and the digital realm of contemporary artistic practices, creating aerodynamic, mathematically precise, and intricate sculptures that take the art and design to new levels of invention, while offering a perceptive and playful commentary on contemporary society. As the critic Robert Enright wrote in the art magazine Border Crossings, "Delvoye is involved in a way of making art that reorients our understanding of how beauty can be created". Wim Delvoye has an eclectic oeuvre, exposing his interest in a range of themes, from bodily function, and scatology to the function of art in the current market economy, and numerous subjects in between. He lives and works in Ghent (Belgium).

The Melbourne International Biennial 1999 was a cultural initiative of the City of Melbourne in partnership with Arts Victoria, the Victoria Department of Premier and Cabinet, the Ian Potter Museum of Art, and The University of Melbourne. Originally called "Melbourne Arts International", the event later changed name once the University of Melbourne was able to confirm the involvement of Frances Lindsay and Juliana Enberg, which resulted in a successful fund-raising campaign that increased the initial budget of $1 million. The first edition, curated by Engberg and organized by Bala Starr was titled "Signs of Life", and ran from 14 May through 27 June 1999. Despite having promising figures and the confirmation of Enberg as artistic director, the institutions attached to the project eventually pulled out and the Melbourne Biennial was discontinued after only one edition.
