Bihar Day (Bihar Diwas) is observed every year on March 22, [1] marking the formation of the state of Bihar. On 22 March 1912, the Bihar and Orissa divisions of the Bengal Province were separated to form the Province of Bihar and Orissa in British India. [2] [3] The day is a public holiday in Bihar. [4]

Bihar Day was started and celebrated on large scale by Bihar Government in the tenure of Nitish Kumar. [5] Apart from India, it is celebrated in countries including the United States, Germany, [6] Britain (Scotland), [7] Australia, Canada, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Trinidad and Tobago and Mauritius. [8]

Observance

Every year the Government of Bihar issues a notification declaring the 22 March to be a public holiday to be celebrated as Bihar Day. This holiday applies to all the offices and companies under the jurisdiction of the State and central Government as well as Schools celebrate this day by organising various programmes participated by students. [9]

Mithila Student Union (MSU) (Maithili : मिथिला स्टूडेंट यूनियन) is a non-political student organisation whose sole purpose is the development of Mithila and Maithils living in India. It is one of the largest student organisations in Bihar. It is a registered organization under the provisions of the Societies Registration Act, 1860 under the Indian constitution. Anup Maithil is the founder president of Mithila Student Union. They mostly keep Mithila Art Boarded Maroon Gamchha on their Sholder which is the Symbol of Passion, Love, Bravery and Courage.

Taawdo the Sunlight is an Indian Rajasthani film released on 31 March 2017. The film features Preeti Jhangiani, Pradeep Kabra, Omkar Das Manikpuri and Sachin Choudhary and was written and directed by Vijay Suthar. The film was screened at Rajasthan International Film Festival in January 2017 and received three awards including Best Actress for Preeti Jhangiani and Best Music for Lalit Pandit. It was also screened at Masala Chawk in association with JDA and RIFF Club on 15 July 2018.

The first COVID-19 case in the Indian state of Bihar was reported in Munger on 22 March 2020, a 38-year-old tested positive for COVID-19, he was also the first victim. He had travel history to Qatar. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed a total of 72547 cases as of 4 August 2020, including 20,922 active cases, 9647 deaths and 40,760 recoveries. The virus has spread in 38 districts of the state, of which Patna district has the highest number of cases.

Samvidhan Hatya Diwas is a day in recognition of the sacrifice of people during the 1975 emergency of India, declared by then prime minister Indira Gandhi. Many constitutional rights of citizen and media were withheld during the emergency. This day is observed on 25th of June every year to remind citizens of the struggled citizens to revive democracy in India during 1975-1977.

Bihar Olympic Association (BOA) is responsible to organize various State level tournaments in coordination with other Bihar State Sports Organization and Government of Bihar. BOA is an affiliated member of Indian Olympic Association.
