In 2019, DJ Spoony together with Katie Chatburn and the Ignition Orchestra featuring Nay Nay and Ms Banks on vocals recorded an orchestral version of the song for the UK garage covers album Garage Classical . In 2020, Dizzee Rascal sampled the intro of "Body Groove" throughout his song "Body Loose".

The track samples the drum beat from "God Make Me Funky" by American jazz fusion band the Headhunters, and the melody riff was inspired by the Wu-Tang Clan song "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing ta Fuck Wit". Interspersed with guitars and other strings, "Maria Maria" is driven by a hip hop beat. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, the song won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals before it experienced commercial success.

The song was ranked at number 250 on Blender's "500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born" and is well known for the use of the recurring ostinato on the bongos known as the "Coolie Dance" riddim. It also reached number one on the UK Dance Singles Chart and number 22 in the Netherlands. Mixmag included "Girls Like Us" in their list of "40 of the best UK garage tracks released from 1995 to 2005", while Gemtracks included the song in their list of the "top UK garage songs between 1995–2005".

"That Girl" reached the top 20 in at least eight countries, including the United Kingdom, where it peaked at No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart. It also peaked at No. 3 on the Finnish Singles Chart, No. 4 on the Canadian RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart, No. 7 on the Australian Singles Chart and No. 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
