Kenenisa Bekele Beyecha is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He was the world record holder in both the 5000-metre and 10000-metre from 2004 until 2020. He won the gold medal in both the 5000 m and 10,000 m events at the 2008 Summer Olympics. At the 2004 Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10,000 m and the silver medal in the 5000 m.
Zersenay Tadese Habtesilase is a retired Eritrean long-distance track and road running athlete. He held the men's half marathon world record from 2010 to 2018. His bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2004 Athens Olympics made him the first ever Eritrean Olympic medallist, and his 20-km title at the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships also made him the country's first athlete to win at a world championship event. He does not use a sprint finish to win races; his strategy relies on a combination of efficient running and fast pace setting.

His personal best is only 0.01 of a second behind the world record of former county mate Saif Saaeed Shaheen, who switched national affiliation to Qatar after growing up as Stephen Cherono in the Keiyo District.

He established himself at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, winning the junior title in 2002 and two silver medals in the senior races in 2004. He represented Ethiopia over 5000 metres at the 2004 Summer Olympics, taking fourth place, and over 10000 metres at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He was the 2009 World Champion in cross country.

Uganda competed in the 2003 All-Africa Games which took place at the National Stadium in the city of Abuja, Nigeria. Uganda sent a substantial delegation and entered thirty three events, some, like the women’s 100 and 200 metres, with more than one competitor. The team won five medals and came twenty-sixth in the final medal table. Dorcus Inzikuru won a silver medal in the women’s 5000 metres. The individual bronze medals were won by Ajambo Irene in weightlifting and the boxing team of Jolly Kotongole and Sadat Tebazalwa. In team events, the Ugandan women’s team were awarded a bronze medal in softball.
