Bootie is the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to mashups and bootlegs, and was founded in San Francisco, California. [1] It is now the biggest and longest running all-mashup party in the world, with regular parties in several cities.
The original party began at the Cherry Bar (later known as Codeword) in San Francisco in August 2003, and moved to DNA Lounge in March 2006, [2] where it now occurs every Saturday, and is simulcast into the virtual venue The Level in Second Life. For over a year, it was the only club of its kind in America, and its creators, DJs Adrian & the Mysterious D (aka A Plus D), along with former resident DJ Party Ben, were instrumental in helping to popularize mashup culture on the West Coast. [3] The club has showcased mashup DJs from around the world, including DJ Earworm, DJ Lobsterdust, DJs from Mars, ShyBoy, Go Home Productions, Evolution Control Committee, and dj BC, as well as featuring a live house band, Smash-Up Derby, known as "the world's first mashup rock band." [4]
Bootie SF has been regularly named "Best Dance Club" in the SF Weekly's "Best of SF". The Bay Guardian's annual "Best of the Bay" has awarded Bootie for "Best Theme Club Night/Best Dance Party and Best Event Producers" for several years. Best of the Bay Issue [5] Hallmarks of the event include the Midnight Mashup Show, which often consists of aerial act performers or drag queens, as well as a regular 11 PM show, which rotates throughout the month between live mashup rock band Smash-Up Derby, burlesque show Hubba Hubba Revue, and drag revue The Monster Show. After the shows, the crowd is thrown a limited number of Bootie CDs, which many club patrons collect. The night has been written about in national magazines such as Spin, [6] Complex, [7] and Club Systems International.
In July 2005, A Plus D launched a sister club in Los Angeles called Bootie LA, which began at The Echo in Echo Park and is now held at the adjacent Echoplex. [8] In February 2007, the promoters launched Bootie NYC in New York City. [9] That same month, they partnered with French DJ ComaR to help launch Bootie Paris, which ran for nearly three years at La Mechanique Ondulatoire. Bootie Munich, with resident DJs BootOX and Schmolli, was launched in October 2007. Bootie Boston, with dj BC and Lenlow, was launched in March 2008. [10] Bootie Berlin launched in June 2009 with residents DJ Morgoth, Mashup-Germany, and Dr. Waumiau. Bootie Rio in Brazil was launched in May 2010. Bootie ATL, in Atlanta with dj BC, was launched in August 2011.
A Plus D have also done one-off Bootie parties in many other places around the globe, including Hong Kong, [11] Beijing, [12] Singapore, London, Vienna, Brazil, Brisbane, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, Mexico City, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Hamburg, Lithuania, Ireland, [13] and Salt Lake City.
While the number of CDs given away at each party is limited, the "Bootie Top 10," list of for each month is available on their website and can be downloaded for free as MP3 files. The selection is curated by A Plus D, who also produce the annual "Best of Bootie" collection, a much-anticipated annual compilation for mashup fans and those attending the New Year's Eve party, also available as free downloads, both as a continuous mix and individual tracks. DNA Lounge is an all-ages nightclub and restaurant/cafe in the SoMa district of San Francisco owned by Jamie Zawinski, a former Netscape programmer and open-source software hacker. The club features DJ dancing, live music, burlesque performances, and occasionally conferences, private parties, and film premieres.
A mashup is a creative work, usually a song, created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, typically by superimposing the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another and changing the tempo and key where necessary. Such works are considered "transformative" of original content and in the United States they may find protection from copyright claims under the "fair use" doctrine of copyright law.
The San Francisco Bay Guardian was a free alternative newspaper published weekly in San Francisco, California. It was founded in 1966 by Bruce B. Brugmann and his wife, Jean Dibble. The paper was shut down on October 14, 2014. It was relaunched in February 2016 as an online publication.
Richard Quitevis known by his stage name DJ Qbert or Qbert, is an American turntablist and composer. He was awarded America's Best DJ in 2010, was DMC USA Champion 1991 (solo) and achieved titles as DMC World Champion in 1992 and 1993.
"Boulevard of Broken Songs" is a popular mash-up mixed by American DJ and producer Party Ben in late 2004. The mix consists of elements from American rock band Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", English rock band Oasis's "Wonderwall", Scottish soft rock band Travis's "Writing to Reach You", and American rapper Eminem's "Sing for the Moment", which itself samples American hard rock band Aerosmith's "Dream On". "Sing for the Moment" was used solely because Party Ben did not have "Dream On" on hand and was on deadline for his Sixx Mixx radio show. Later versions used Aerosmith's original.
American Edit is a mashup album released by Party Ben and Team9 under the shared alias Dean Gray. Its primary basis is the Green Day album American Idiot—the name "Dean Gray" is a spoonerism of "Green Day".
The EndUp is a nightclub in San Francisco, California. Opened in 1973, the club is located at 6th Street and Harrison in the South of Market district. Known for its status as an afterhours club, the venue has hosted a variety of benefits and events during its time as part of San Francisco's nightlife community.
Bob Cronin, better known by the stage name dj BC, is an American disc jockey and mashup producer.
Justin Boland, also known as J Boogie is a DJ, music producer, radio host, music director and music curator from San Francisco with over 25 years of experience in the music industry.
The Trocadero Transfer, or The Troc, was an after hours dance club in operation from December 1977 to the late–1990s in San Francisco, California, U.S.. It was located at 520 4th Street at Bryant in the SoMa neighborhood. The club has been compared to Studio 54 in New York City, and their patrons would travel from other cities to attend the party.
Hubba Hideout was one of the most famous skateboarding spots. It was located in San Francisco near the Justin Herman Plaza on The Embarcadero. Its central features were two oversized sets of 6 stairs with large concrete ledges on both sides. The spot is part of a pedestrian walkway but was more commonly used by the local skateboarders and vagrants. The city of San Francisco made numerous attempts over the years to ward off skateboarders from the spot, and in January 2011 city workers completely demolished its ledges and stairs.
Adrian & the Mysterious D were an American DJ duo who helped popularize mashup and bootleg music in America. The duo consisted of Adriana Roberts and Deidre Roberts. Based in San Francisco, the duo founded the Bootie club night in 2003, the first mashup bootleg party in the United States. In 2005, they started a sister Bootie club in Los Angeles, and in 2007, launched Bootie parties in New York City and Paris, and in 2008, Munich and Boston. Bootie Mashup parties and one-offs in other cities followed.
Jordan Roseman, known professionally as DJ Earworm, is an American mashup artist from San Francisco, California, who has achieved recognition for his technically sophisticated, songwriting oriented music and video mashups. His annual “United State of Pop” mashup features the top 25 songs of the year, based in part on the Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 chart, in one mix.
The Hubba Hubba Revue is a San Francisco–based neo-burlesque and variety show which opened in September 2006 and continues with weekly and monthly shows in San Francisco and Oakland.
Noisebridge is an anarchistic maker and hackerspace located in San Francisco. It is inspired by the European hackerspaces Metalab in Vienna and c-base in Berlin. Noisebridge describes itself as "a space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and learning". Outside of its headquarters, Noisebridge forms a wider international community. It was organized in 2007 and has had permanent facilities since 2008.
Death Guild is the oldest continually operating gothic/industrial dance club in the United States, and second in the world. Death Guild opened on March 15, 1993, and is currently held every Monday at DNA Lounge in San Francisco.
Mutiny Radio is an internet radio station operating from the Mission District of San Francisco, California. The station has an eclectic talk format, hosting local shows with interviews, as well as live performances of comedy, music, hip-hop, theater, storytelling, philosophy, and poetry. Shows are streamed live online and made available in podcast form on ITunes and other platforms.
Afrolicious is a dance-fusion collective based in San Francisco, California. Founded by brothers Joe "Pleasuremaker" McGuire and Oz "Señor Oz" McGuire, the group's weekly residency at the Elbo Room in the Mission District has established Afrolicious as an integral player in the San Francisco live music scene. At its core Afrolicious consists of a DJ duo, but has since expanded to include a live band with as many as twelve pieces as well as a project known as Afrolicious Soundsystem. In addition to its reputation for regular touring, Afrolicious has released two EPs as well as a full-length original album.
Mixcrate was an online audio distribution platform based in California, United States that enabled its users to upload, promote and share their DJ mixes to a worldwide audience and to help DJs promote and grow their careers as professional DJs. It was a community-based platform designed for DJs mainly aimed at promoting their mixes and for fans to follow the work of their favorite DJs. It also catered to music listeners, club promoters, radio stations and event organizers looking to discover new talent.
The Stud was a queer bar located in South of Market, San Francisco, closed in May 2020. It was started by associates George Matson and Alexis Muir on May 27, 1966. According to George Matson, it was a "bar for people, not just pretty bodies". Originally, the Stud was located at 1535 Folsom Street; in 1987, it moved to its current location at Ninth and Harrison Streets. The Stud was known for its themed parties, drag and burlesque shows, and community events. It was also home of the famous Trannyshack, a weekly drag show that featured all different types of drag and drag stars from 1996 until 2008.
