Bortz (chieftain)

Bortz, also Boricius (Hungarian : Borc), was a Cuman chieftain in the 13th century. He voluntarily converted to Christianity in 1227, acknowledging the suzerainty of the Kingdom of Hungary. Within a year, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cumania was established in Bortz's land along the river Siret in present-day Romania.

Name

His name appears in various forms in contemporary records. A papal letter from 1227 refers to him as Bortz, in addition to certain documents of the Dominican Order, while the chronicle of Emo of Friesland calls him Boricius. It is widely regarded that he is identical with that Begovars, who led the Cumans that helped Duke Béla with his attack on the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia in 1229 or 1230, according to the Galician–Volhynian Chronicle. The Commentariolum de provinciae Hungariae originibus (1259) and subsequent narratives of the Dominicans in Hungary distinguishes two baptized Cuman chiefs from that time: the first prince is called as Brut, Brutus, Bruch, Bauch, Barc or Biutus, while the name of the second chieftain is recorded as Bembroch, Bernborch, Breroth, Bibrech or Membrok. According to Hungarian historian György Györffy, the second leader (Membrok) was the son of Bortz. [1] Romanian historian Ioan Ferenț considered Bortz and Membrok were the same person. [2] Hungarian historian Maria Magdolna Tatár also referred the two names to a single person. [3]

The name Bortz is can be identified with the Turkic word "bars", which means "panther" or "leopard" (György Györffy), or "burč", which was used in the meaning of "pepper", or "borč" (but least probably), an equivalent to "debt" (Vladimir Drimba). According to Szilvia Kovács, this correlation is supported by the Old East Slavic version of his name (Begovars), as the first element of the name can be connected with Turkic " bey " of "beg". [4] [5]

Life

It is plausible his tribe – Burčoğli (Old East Slavic : Burchebichi, Hungarian : Borcsol) – lived in the territory between the rivers Dnieper and Oril in present-day Ukraine. [6] According to the chronicle of Emo of Friesland, Bortz (Boricius) was "fourth in rank among the major Cuman leaders". [7] According to Kovács, following the Battle of the Kalka River (1223), the hierarchy within the Cuman people was the following: Bastyj functioned as the supreme chieftain of the Cumans, Köten and Bačman took the second or third place, while Bortz was fourth among them. [8] After the defeat, Bortz and his people fled westbound, and his group (also known as "Danubian Cumans") settled down in the area between Lower Danube and the southeastern Carpathians. His residence was Karabuna, later known as Tatarbunary (present-day in Ukraine), where other Cuman tribes were already settled in the previous decades. [9]

The way for the Cumans' conversion was opened after their defeat at the Kalka River. Bortz and other Cumans sought assistance from Hungary in order to prevent a possible next Mongol invasion. [9] King Andrew II of Hungary made his oldest son, Béla, Duke of Transylvania in 1226. Duke Béla, who wanted to expand his authority over the neighboring Cuman tribes, supported the Dominican friars' missionary activities. The nearly-contemporaneous Alberic of Trois-Fontaines wrote that a Cuman chieftain's son (possibly Membrok) visited Robert, Archbishop of Esztergom in Hungary in 1227, asking the prelate to baptize him and his 12 retainers. Membrok also reported that his father and his 2,000 subjects were also willing to come to Transylvania to be baptized. Robert accepted the offer and went to Transylvania with three Hungarian prelates: Bartholomew le Gros, Bishop of Pécs; Bartholomew, Bishop of Veszprém, and Raynald of Belleville, Bishop of Transylvania. According to the chronicle of Emo, they met the Cuman chieftain Bortz and baptized him and his retainers in the presence of Duke Béla. [7] Bortz also submitted himself and his people to the Hungarian monarch; a Dominican account claims that King Andrew II became the godfather of Membrok. [10] It is possible that Robert and his three suffragans crossed the border across the Carpathian Mountains and the baptisms took place in Cumania . [2] The number of Cumans baptised with their chief varies from source to source. Emo specified a "large number", Alberic noted 15,000, and the Austrian chronicles Vatzonis , Leobiense and Claustroneuburgense described 10,000 converts. [11] In exchange for Bortz's oath of fealty, Andrew II granted privileges of freedom to the Cumans and their possession of land in Transylvania. [10] The conversion of thousands of Cumans was followed by the creation of the Catholic bishopric of Cumania. [11] According to Alberic, Archbishop Robert consecrated the Dominican friar Theodoric bishop of the new diocese in 1228. [11] The territory of the bishopric overlapped Bortz's domain along the tributary Milcov. [9]

Béla's youngest brother, Andrew, Prince of Halych, was expelled from his principality in the spring of 1229 or 1230. Béla decided to help him to regain his throne. The duke launched military campaign against Daniel of Galicia, receiving support from Bortz and his tribe. Béla crossed the Carpathian Mountains and laid siege to Halych together with his Cuman allies in 1229 or 1230. Daniel was supported by other Cumans too, under the leadership of Köten. It is possible, Bortz and his army joined Béla's forces from outside the mountains. The Hungarian expedition ended in failure, Béla could not seize Halych and withdrew his troops. [12] A papal diploma narrates that Bortz and his converted Cumans were under constant threat from three sides, the Sultanate of Rum, the neighboring pagan Cumans and Brodnici, and Orthodox Vlachs (including Romanians) and Bulgarians. [12] Because of their danger, Pope Gregory IX declared that he exempted "Cumania" (i.e. Bortz's land) from the authority of king of Hungary on 1 October 1229, subjecting them directly to the tutelage of the Holy See. [13] Bortz died "as a good Christian" prior to the first Mongol invasion of Hungary in 1241, before the episcopal church was built in 1234, according to Dominican sources. [5] He was buried in the Virgin Mary chapel built by the Dominicans in Buda. [13]

Andrew II, also known as Andrew of Jerusalem, was King of Hungary and Croatia between 1205 and 1235. He ruled the Principality of Halych from 1188 until 1189/1190, and again between 1208/1209 and 1210. He was the younger son of Béla III of Hungary, who entrusted him with the administration of the newly conquered Principality of Halych in 1188. Andrew's rule was unpopular, and the boyars expelled him. Béla III willed property and money to Andrew, obliging him to lead a crusade to the Holy Land. King Béla had his son crowned king at the age of six and appointed him Duke of Slavonia. Still a child, Stephen married Elizabeth, a daughter of a chieftain of the Cumans whom his father settled in the Great Hungarian Plain.

Ladislaus IV of Hungary King of Hungary and Croatia

Ladislaus IV, also known as Ladislas the Cuman, was king of Hungary and Croatia from 1272 to 1290. His mother, Elizabeth, was the daughter of a chieftain from the pagan Cumans who had settled in Hungary. At the age of seven, he married Elisabeth, a daughter of King Charles I of Sicily. Ladislaus was only 10 when a rebellious lord, Joachim Gutkeled, kidnapped and imprisoned him.

Taksony of Hungary Grand Prince of the Hungarians

Taksony was the Grand Prince of the Hungarians after their catastrophic defeat in the 955 Battle of Lechfeld. In his youth he had participated in plundering raids in Western Europe, but during his reign the Hungarians only targeted the Byzantine Empire. The Gesta Hungarorum recounts that significant Muslim and Pecheneg groups settled in Hungary under Taksony.

Béla IV of Hungary King of Hungary (1206–1270)

Béla IV was King of Hungary and Croatia between 1235 and 1270, and Duke of Styria from 1254 to 1258. As the oldest son of King Andrew II, he was crowned upon the initiative of a group of influential noblemen in his father's lifetime in 1214. His father, who strongly opposed Béla's coronation, refused to give him a province to rule until 1220. In this year, Béla was appointed Duke of Slavonia, also with jurisdiction in Croatia and Dalmatia. Around the same time, Béla married Maria, a daughter of Theodore I Laskaris, Emperor of Nicaea. From 1226, he governed Transylvania as duke. He supported Christian missions among the pagan Cumans who dwelled in the plains to the east of his province. Some Cuman chieftains acknowledged his suzerainty and he adopted the title of King of Cumania in 1233. King Andrew died on 21 September 1235 and Béla succeeded him. He attempted to restore royal authority, which had diminished under his father. For this purpose, he revised his predecessors' land grants and reclaimed former royal estates, causing discontent among the noblemen and the prelates.

Cumania 900s–1241 Turkic confederation in Central Asia and Europe

The name Cumania originated as the Latin exonym for the Cuman–Kipchak confederation, which was a tribal confederation in the western part of the Eurasian Steppe, between the 10th and 13th centuries. The confederation was dominated by two Turkic nomadic tribes: the Cumans and the Kipchaks. Cumania was known in Islamic sources as Desht-i Qipchaq, which means "Steppe of the Kipchaks"; or "foreign land sheltering the Kipchaks", in Persian. Russian sources have referred to Cumania as the "Polovtsian Steppe", or the "Polovtsian Plain".

<i>Gesta Hungarorum</i> The first extant Hungarian book about history

Gesta Hungarorum, or The Deeds of the Hungarians, is the earliest book about Hungarian history which has survived for posterity. Its genre is not chronicle, but gesta, meaning "deeds" or "acts", which is a medieval entertaining literature. It was written in Latin by an unidentified author who has traditionally been called Anonymus in scholarly works. According to most historians, the work was completed between around 1200 and 1230. The Gesta exists in a sole manuscript from the second part of the 13th century, which was for centuries held in Vienna. It is part of the collection of Széchényi National Library in Budapest.

Gelou Legendary Vlach ruler of Transylvania around 900 AD

Gelou was the Vlach ruler of Transylvania at the time of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin around 900 AD, according to the Gesta Hungarorum. Although the Gesta Hungarorum, which was written after 1150, does not indicate the enemies of the conquering Hungarians (Magyars) known from earlier annals and chronicles, it refers to local rulers—including Gelou—who are not mentioned in other primary sources. Consequently, historians debate whether Gelou was a historical person or an imaginary figure created by the unidentified author of the Gesta Hungarorum. In Romanian historiography, based on the mention of him by Anonymus some 300 years later, Gelou is considered one of three early-10th-century Romanian dukes with lands in the intra-Carpathian region of present-day Romania.

Glad (duke) Legendary ruler of Banat around 900 AD

Glad was the ruler of Banat at the time of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin around 900 AD, according to the Gesta Hungarorum. The Gesta, which was written by an author known in modern scholarship as Anonymus in the second half of the 12th century or in the early 13th century, is the earliest extant Hungarian chronicle. The Gesta did not refer to the enemies of the conquering Hungarians, who had been mentioned in earlier annals and chronicles, but wrote of a dozen persons, including Glad, who are unknown from other primary sources of the Hungarian Conquest. Therefore, modern historians debate whether Glad was an actual enemy of the conquerors or only a "fictitious person" made up by Anonymus. In Romanian historiography, based on the mention by Anonymus some 300 years later, Glad is described as one of the three Romanian dukes who ruled a historical region of present-day Romania in the early 10th century.

Köten 13th-century Cuman khan

Köten was a Cuman–Kipchak chieftain (khan) and military commander active in the mid-13th century. He forged an important alliance with the Kievan Rus' against the Mongols but was ultimately defeated by them at the Kalka River in 1223. After the Mongol victory, Köten led 40,000 "huts" to Hungary, where he became an ally of the Hungarian king and accepted Catholicism, but was nonetheless assassinated by the Hungarian nobility.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cumania was a Latin-rite bishopric west of the Siret River from 1228 to 1241. The lands incorporated into the diocese had been dominated by the nomadic Cumans since about 1100. Catholic missions began after Andrew II of Hungary granted Burzenland to the Teutonic Knights in 1211. After Andrew expelled the Knights from the territory in 1225, Dominican friars continued the Cuman mission. Robert, Archbishop of Esztergom baptized Boricius, an influential Cuman chieftain, two years later.

The founding of Wallachia, that is the establishment of the first independent Romanian principality, was achieved at the beginning of the 14th century, through the unification of smaller political units that had existed between the Carpathian Mountains, and the Rivers Danube, Siret and Milcov.

Farcaș, also Farkas, Farkaș or Farcas, was a cneaz mentioned in the Diploma of the Joannites issued by king Béla IV of Hungary (1235–1270) on 2 July 1247; the diploma granted territories to the Knights Hospitaller in the Banate of Severin and Cumania. Farcaş held a kenazate which was given to the knights by the king. His kenazate lay in the northeast of modern Oltenia.

John, also Joan or Ioan, was a cneaz mentioned in the Diploma of the Joannites issued by King Béla IV of Hungary (1235–1270) on 2 July 1247; the diploma granted territories to the Knights Hospitaller in the Banate of Severin and Cumania. John held a kenazate which was given to the knights by the king. His kenazate lay in southern Oltenia.

Duke of Transylvania

The Duke of Transylvania was a title of nobility four times granted to a son or a brother of the Hungarian monarch. The dukes of the first and second creations, Béla (1226–1235) and Stephen of the Árpád dynasty were in fact viceroys with significant authority in Transylvania. The duke of the third creation, Louis, did not administer the province. The fourth duke, Stephen of the Anjou dynasty (1350–1351) did not play any significant role in politics.

Andrew of Hungary was Prince of Halych–Volhynia between 1227 and 1230, and between 1231 and 1234, and Prince of Zvenyhorod in 1226.

Robert, Archbishop of Esztergom

Robert was a French-born prelate in the Kingdom of Hungary in the first decades of the 13th century. He was Archbishop of Esztergom between 1226 and 1239 and Bishop of Veszprém from 1209 till 1226. He played a decisive role in the establishment of the short-lived Diocese of Cumania. He was sharply opposed to the employment of Jews and Muslims in the administration of the royal revenues. He even put Hungary under interdict to force Andrew II of Hungary to dismiss his non-Christian officials.

Battle of Kerlés Engagement between Pechenegs and Ouzes in 1068

The Battle of Kerlés or Battle of Chiraleș, also known as the Battle of Cserhalom, was an engagement between an army of Pechenegs and Ouzes commanded by Osul and the troops of King Solomon of Hungary and his cousins, Dukes Géza and Ladislaus, in Transylvania in 1068. The Pechenegs had been the dominant power of the westernmost regions of the Eurasian steppes since around 895. However, large Pecheneg groups moved to the Balkan Peninsula at the same time as the westward migration of the Ouzes and Cumans in the 1040s. The first recorded Pecheneg invasion of Transylvania occurred during the reign of Stephen I of Hungary.

The judge of the Cumans was a short-lived legal office, then an ex officio title in the Hungarian royal court, existed since the second half of the 13th century. In 1270, the Palatine of Hungary assumed the dignity and became part of its title to merge the two positions for centuries, during which time Cuman settlers were concentrated into Kunság region.
