Bruce Mansfield Power Plant was a 2.49-gigawatt (2,490 MW), coal power plant located in Shippingport, Pennsylvania in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. The plant was operated by FirstEnergy. It began operations in 1976 and was shut down in November 2019. [1]
Construction of Bruce Mansfield commenced in 1970. The plant was operated by Pennsylvania Power (a subsidiary of Ohio Edison). Its ownership was a consortium of Pennsylvania Power, Ohio Edison, Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Toledo Edison, and Duquesne Light to form the Central Area Power Coordination (CAPCO). [2] Bruce Mansfield began commercial operations of Unit 1 in 1976 with Units 2 and 3 following suit in 1977 and 1980 respectively. All three of the units generated 830 MW each with a nameplate capacity of 2490 MW. [3] The plant was named after D. Bruce Mansfield, a former chairman of Pennsylvania Power. [2] Murray Energy was the primary supplier of coal for Bruce Mansfield. The coal was shipped from West Virginia. [4]
FirstEnergy Solutions announced in August 2018 that they were closing Bruce Mansfield by June 2021. FirstEnergy Solutions blamed the wholesale market system, which PJM Interconnection operates on, for not relying on coal and nuclear plants. [5] PJM Interconnection conducted an analysis and concluded the plant's closure would not affect grid reliability. [6] The closure was moved back to November 2019 due to, "a lack of economic viability." [7]
Units 1 and 2 were installed with a flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) system to prevent sulfur dioxide (SO2) from being emitted into the atmosphere. [3] [8] Its chimney is 950 feet (290 m) tall. [3] The sludge was then transported 7 miles (11 km) by pipe to Little Blue Run Lake between Beaver County, Pennsylvania and Hancock County, West Virginia. [3] [8] When Unit 3 was constructed in 1980, an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) system, designed by the Weir Group, was installed instead for the unit to curb particulate emissions. [9] Its chimney is 600 feet (180 m) tall. [3] To reduce waste disposal from scrubbers at Bruce Mansfield, National Gypsum constructed a nearby plant in 1998 to process synthetic gypsum from the plant to produce drywall. [10] To deliver the gypsum for the nearby manufacturer, a forced-oxidation gypsum (FOG) system was built. [11] A $200 million dewatering facility was completed in 2016 in response to a 2012 settlement that prohibits the further disposal of byproduct at Little Blue Run Lake. The facility would separate byproduct from water and then be properly disposed of in a lined impoundment at Murray Energy's mine in Marshall County, West Virginia. [12] [13] The dewatering facility began operations in January 2017, but problems at the new facility forced the plant to go offline the following month. [14] The plant restarted two weeks later. [15]
A release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during repair work on a pipe killed two and injured four workers in August 2017. [16] The workers' families who experienced casualties in the accident filed lawsuits against FirstEnergy in November 2017 seeking damages. [17] Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fined FirstEnergy $77,605 for workplace hazards and also fined subcontractor Enerfab $129,340 for failing to provide "appropriate respiratory protection". [18] FirstEnergy ultimately settled by paying a fine of $65,963. [19]
On January 10, 2018, Bruce Mansfield caught on fire causing damage to its roof and duct work. [20] In a filing later that month, FirstEnergy revealed that the fire caused significant damage to the equipment for Units 1 and 2. [21] The damage was severe enough that deactivation of both units were accelerated from June 2021 to February 5, 2019. [22]
Drax power station is a large biomass power station in North Yorkshire, England, capable of co-firing petroleum coke. It has a 2.6 GW capacity for biomass and 1.29 GW capacity for coal. Its name comes from the nearby village of Drax. It is situated on the River Ouse between Selby and Goole. Its generating capacity of 3,906 megawatts (MW) is the highest of any power station in the United Kingdom, providing about 6% of the United Kingdom's electricity supply.
The Kintigh Generating Station, also known as Somerset Operating Co. LLC of the Upstate New York Power Producers was a 675-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Somerset, New York, United States. The plant was owned by AES Corporation until bankruptcy. Its unit was launched into service in 1984. Coal is provided to the plant via the Somerset Railroad. The waste heat is dumped into Lake Ontario, resulting in a warm-water plume visible on satellite images. The plant's 625-foot smoke stack can be seen across Lake Ontario from the shores of Toronto, Pickering, Oshawa, and Ajax, Ontario. It can also be seen from points along the Niagara Escarpment, including Lockport, NY, approximately 20 miles south. Power from the plant is transferred by dual 345kV power lines on wood pylons, which run south from the plant through rural agricultural land. In Royalton, NY they split at their physical junction with the dual circuit 345-kV Niagara-to-Edic transmission line, owned by the New York Power Authority, one circuit heads west to a substation at Niagara Falls, the other heads east to Station 80 south of Rochester. This bulk electric transmission constraint, created by the Somerset plant tie-in and forcing wheeling through 230kV and 345kV transmission lines to the Homer City Coal Plant east of Pittsburgh, PA, and returning to NY at the Watercurry substation outside Elmira, will be resolved through the Empire State Line proposal approved by NY Independent System Operator (NYISO).
The Shippingport Atomic Power Station was the world's first full-scale atomic electric power plant devoted exclusively to peacetime uses. It was located near the present-day Beaver Valley Nuclear Generating Station on the Ohio River in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States, about 25 miles (40 km) from Pittsburgh.

The Nanticoke Generating Station was a coal-fired power station in Nanticoke, Ontario in operation from 1972 to 2013. It was the largest coal power station in North America and, at full capacity, it could provide 3,964 MW of power into the southern Ontario power grid from its base in Nanticoke, Ontario, Canada, and provided as much as 15% of Ontario's electricity.
The William H. Zimmer Power Station, located near Moscow, Ohio, is a 1.35-gigawatt coal power plant. Planned by Cincinnati Gas and Electric (CG&E), with Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric and Dayton Power & Light (DP&L) as its partners, it was originally intended to be a nuclear power plant. Although once estimated to be 97% complete, poor construction and quality assurance (QA) led to the plant being converted to coal-fired generation. The plant began operations in 1991. Today, the plant is owned and operated by Vistra Energy.
Redbank Power Station is a biomass power station located in Warkworth, within the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. The station is currently awaiting a restart of operations after converting from its original use as a coal-fired power station. Redbank is unique for its utilisation of circulating fluidised bed technology, the only generator of its kind in Australia. Upon re-fire, the station will operate using 100% biomass at a capacity of 151MW of electricity.
The W. H. Sammis Power Plant is a 2.2-gigawatt coal power plant in Stratton, Ohio, in Jefferson County, Ohio. The plant is operated by Energy Harbor. It began operations in 1960.
Coal generated about 22% of the electricity at utility-scale facilities in the United States in 2021, down from 39% in 2014. In 2021, coal supplied 9.5 quadrillion British thermal units (2,800 TWh) of primary energy to electric power plants, which made up 90% of coal's contribution to U.S. energy supply. Utilities buy more than 90% of the coal consumed in the United States. There were 241 coal powered units across the United States in 2019. Coal plants have been closing since the 2010s due to cheaper and cleaner natural gas and renewables. But environmentalists say that political action is needed to close them faster, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the United States to better limit climate change.
The Dickerson Generating Station is an 853 MW electric generating plant owned by NRG Energy, located approximately two miles west of Dickerson, Maryland.
The Wilton power station refers to a series of coal, oil, gas and biomass fired CHP power stations which provide electricity and heat for the Wilton International Complex, with excess electricity being sold to the National Grid. It is located on the Wilton site in Redcar and Cleveland, south of the town of Middlesbrough in North East England. The station has provided for the site since opening in 1952, when it was operated by ICI. The station is currently owned and operated by SembCorp Industries.
Brunner Island Steam Electric Station is a coal-fired electrical generation facility in York County, Pennsylvania. It occupies most of the area of the eponymous island on Susquehanna River. The power plant has three major units, which came online in 1961, 1965, and 1969, with respective generating capacities of 334 MW, 390 MW, and 759 MW. In addition, three internal combustion generators were installed in 1967. Talen Energy will stop coal use at the plant in 2028.
Armstrong Power Station was a 356 megawatt (MW), coal power plant in Washington Township, Armstrong County along the Allegheny River across from Mahoning Creek and Templeton, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Kittanning, Pennsylvania. The plant operated from 1958 to 2012.
The George F. Weaton Power Station was a coal-fired power plant located in Potter Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, along the Ohio River. It was formerly owned by Horsehead Corporation and was completed in 1958 by Kaiser Engineers, later ICF International, at a cost of $30 million. Although the primary purpose of the plant was to supply power to the company's nearby zinc smelting operation, excess electricity could be sold to the local grid market via the site's 138,000 and 69,000 volt transmission lines, owned and operated by Duquesne Light. The power plant itself consisted of two 375,000 lb/h Combustion Engineering steam generators, two 55 megawatt Westinghouse tandem compound double flow steam turbines, and two 65 megawatt Westinghouse generators. The plant was idled in September 2011 and officially closed in July 2012, after more than 50 years of service.
Little Blue Run Lake or Little Blue Run is the largest coal ash impound in the United States. FirstEnergy owns the site, located in Western Pennsylvania and parts of the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, and has disposed of billions of gallons of coal waste into the body of water. Several court cases have been brought against the company as a result of the damage caused by the company's practices at the site.
Longview Power Plant is a coal-fired power plant located near Maidsville, West Virginia. The plant's single unit generates 700 megawatt (MW) of electricity from run-of-mine coal and natural gas.
The Shell Pennsylvania Petrochemicals Complex is an under-construction ethylene cracker plant located in Potter Township, Pennsylvania, United States, owned and operated by Shell Oil Company, the American subsidiary of supermajor oil company Royal Dutch Shell. The plant is near the interchange of Interstate 376 and Pennsylvania Route 18, about 25 miles (40 km) from Pittsburgh. It is expected to begin operating in the early 2020s, producing over a million tons per year of plastic pellets. Due to the impacts of COVID-19, Shell suspended work causing project completion to be delayed past an earlier target of first half of 2020. In February 2021, Shell projected plant completion in 2022.
Hatfield's Ferry Power Station was a 1.7-gigawatt, coal power plant located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The plant was operated by FirstEnergy. It began operations in 1969 and was shut down in 2013.
Nuclear power has been widely established in Pennsylvania since the 1950s, and has grown to provide almost 25% of the energy produced in PA. This is achieved through the four active reactors currently operating. There are five inactive reactors in PA, including Three Mile Island, which had a partial meltdown and caused a reevaluation of nuclear reactor safety practices.
