Brunch (stylized as BRUNCH B-SIDES) is the first extended play by the American pop rock band Self released on September 23, 1999, through DreamWorks Records and Spongebath Records. It consists of cut b-sides tracks from Self's third studio album, Breakfast with Girls (1999), and received generally positive reviews.

Contents

Background

During the production of Self's third album, Breakfast with Girls (1999), the album was delayed multiple times. Brunch was to be released to tide fans over, and was available by pre-ordering the album at select retailers. [1] Brunch primarily consists of b-sides and extras, cut by DreamWorks from Breakfast with Girls. [2] "Flip-Top Box" was originally written by lead band member Matt Mahaffey in an attempt to quit smoking, but he would later regain his smoking addiction by March 2000. [3]

Release

Brunch was released by DreamWorks Records and Spongebath Records, [4] [5] on September 23, 1999. [6] It was intentionally marketed as a limited edition release, [7] only available at select retailers and markets, and in “very limited” quantities. [8]

Brunch was originally meant to be included alongside Breakfast with Girls upon its release, but was delayed due to it yet being manufactured at the time, [6] and was given exclusively to those who had pre-ordered the album early as compensation for its delays. [1] All three songs featured in Brunch were later released on the double vinyl release of Breakfast with Girls. [9] [10] Brunch was later made available for digital download on Spongebath's website alongside Self's first compilation album Feels Like Breakin' Shit (1998). [11]

Reception

Bryan Tilford of INK19 called Brunch “too genius for their mother disc”, aswell as noting it’s availability online as a free digital download from Spongebath's website. [12] In a separate review, Tilford praised it as containing “even more jazzy mega-quirk than Self’s usual powerpacked pop salvos”. Highlighting "Flip-Top Box" for its beats and music sampling, alongside "Happy Accidents" as a parody of Andy Partridge's sarcasm, calling it “well worth”. [6]
