Argentina sent to the 1960 Summer Olympics its eighth national team, under the auspices of the Argentine Olympic Committee, 91 athletes, something which had not happened since the 1932 Games in Los Angeles and which has not happened since. Ironically, the flag bearer, a woman named Cristina Hardekopf, was a diver but was not included in the delegation as a participating athlete. However, Jorge Somlay, a rower, participated as Argentina's youngest Olympic competitor at only 13 years old.

Flagbearer and defending two-time Olympic champion Adhemar Ferreira da Silva could not repeat his performance and placed fourteenth in the triple jump,
The football tournament at the 1960 Summer Olympics was held from 26 August to 10 September in 1960 throughout Italy. The tournament featured 16 men's national teams from four continental confederations. The 16 teams were drawn into four groups of four and each group played a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the first-ranked teams of each group advanced to the semi-finals, and culminating with the gold medal match in Rome on 10 September 1960.
The 2009–10 Coppa Italia was the 63rd edition of the domestic tournament. The competition started on 2 August 2009 and ended on 5 May 2010. As in the previous year, 78 clubs took part in the tournament. Internazionale were the cup holders.
Russia have participated in twelve UEFA European Championships, the second-most among all participants of the Euro after Germany, equalled to Spain, five of which were as the Soviet Union and one of which was representing the CIS. The Soviet Union Olympic football team was the national Olympic football team of the Soviet Union from 1952 to 1992. The team participated in all of the qualification football tournaments for Summer Olympics. Until 1992, when age restrictions were officially introduced, the Soviet Union used the first team both in qualification tournaments and finals except for 1960 and 1964 when the second national team was used for the qualification tournaments.
Czechoslovakia participated in the UEFA European Championship three times: 1960, 1976, and 1980. UEFA and FIFA have recognized both the Czech Republic and Slovakia as joint and equal successors to Czechoslovakia.
