Bundaberg Rugby League

The Bundaberg Rugby League is a rugby league competition in the Wide Bay and Fraser Coast regions of Queensland, Australia. Headquartered in Bundaberg, the competition was founded in 1913, and features six clubs competing across three senior grades.

Representative Team

The local representative team for the league is known as the Bundaberg Grizzlies. The side formerly competed in the Queensland Cup competition, and is based at Salter Oval in the city centre of Bundaberg.

Current Clubs

There are currently six clubs in the Bundaberg Rugby League competition. The South Burnett Rugby League enters a combined team into the Under 18s competition.

Junior League

The Bundaberg Rugby League has two junior competitions; the Bundaberg Junior Rugby League and the Fraser Coast Junior Rugby League. Some of the clubs in these leagues field senior sides in the Northern Districts Rugby League competition.

The Queensland Cup, currently known as the Hostplus Cup for sponsorship reasons, is the highest-level regional rugby league football competition in Queensland, Australia. It is run by the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) and is contested by fifteen teams, thirteen of which are based in Queensland, with one based in New South Wales and one in Central Province, Papua New Guinea.

The Northern Division of the Queensland Rugby League is responsible for administering the game of rugby league in North Queensland, specifically in the area from Sarina in the south to Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands in the north and west to Mount Isa as well as into the Gulf Communities. There are over 8000 registered players across 36 senior clubs and 39 junior clubs in this division. The Northern Division is responsible for the historic Foley Shield competition that is held each year. Mid West and Mount Isa play in the Toyota Outback Carnival.

The Central Division of the Queensland Rugby League is responsible for the promotion, administration and facilitation of rugby league throughout most of regional Queensland. Regional areas include the Darling Downs, Wide Bay–Burnett, the South West, the Central West, and Fitzroy & Mackay.

Australian rules football in South East Queensland has a varied history and many changes were made especially in the 21st century. Ruled and organised by the AFL Queensland, the region had a total of 46 teams playing in different divisions.

The Gold Coast Rugby League is a rugby league football competition based in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. It is under the administration of the Queensland Rugby League through the South East Queensland Division, which also administers the Brisbane and Ipswich competitions.

Rugby league in Queensland is the most popular winter sport in the state. Rugby league was introduced in 1908 and within just a few years it surpassed rugby union there to become the most popular football code as players switched to play professionally in the Queensland Rugby League. In the 1920s, Queenslanders began leaving to play professionally in the New South Wales Rugby League which became a more popular competition. However Queensland maintained a strong rugby league culture, with the state continuing to perform well in interstate rugby league. The later advent of the State of Origin series ensured that players would return to represent their state.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rugby union in Queensland</span>

Rugby union in Queensland has traditionally been one of the most popular professional and recreational team sports in the state. Rugby union was introduced in the British colony's capital Brisbane in 1876. Initially it struggled to gain a foothold due to the popularity of Australian rules there until it got its break in 1882 with the first inter-colonial matches against New South Wales, and the formation of the Northern Rugby Union. Between 1885 and 1887 it became the dominant code after the leading schools association decided to play it exclusively and after 1890 spread virtually unopposed throughout the colony.

The National Rugby League is the top level rugby league competition in Australia and New Zealand. It was formed in 1998 after the merger of the Australian Super League and the Australian Rugby League. Inaugurally containing 20 teams, rationalisation cut this number down to 14 by 2000, before the competition expanded back to 16 by 2007. A 17th club, the Dolphins, joined the league in 2023.

The AFL Wide Bay is an amateur Australian rules football competition that was formerly known as the "Bundaberg-Wide Bay Australian Football League", which was formed in 1987 through the merger of the "Bundaberg Australian Football League" and "Wide Bay Australian Football League". The competition currently featured teams from the cities of Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay.

The Cairns District Rugby League was formed on 5 August 1918 and is the administrative body for the game of rugby league football in Cairns, Queensland. The CDRL runs senior, junior and women's club competitions and has its headquarters at Barlow Park. The competition changed its name to Far North Queensland Rugby League in 2023.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Central Queensland NRL bid</span>

The Central Queensland NRL bid was a bid launched in March 2009 that tried to represent Central Queensland in an expanded National Rugby League competition. The bid was headquartered in Rockhampton, Queensland.

“The Queensland Amateur Rugby League set the air-filled sphere rolling”, opening the competition rounds on 14 May. Three grade competitions were conducted in Brisbane. Ipswich entered a representative team to play the five Brisbane senior teams and also began their own club competition. Club-level rugby league was also played in Maryborough.

The Queensland Amateur Rugby League conducted four grade competitions during 1911 and in representative football, played three sets of three-match series against New South Wales, New Zealand and the "Northern Districts" on New South Wales. Ipswich fielded two teams in the senior QARL competition and also held two lower grade premierships. Club competitions continued in Maryborough.

The Queensland Country Rugby Union, or QCRU, is the governing body for the sport of rugby union within most of the state of Queensland in Australia. It is affiliated with the Queensland Rugby Union.

The Rugby League Ipswich is a rugby league football competition based in Ipswich, Queensland. It is under the administration of the Queensland Rugby League through the South East Queensland Division, which also administers the Brisbane and Gold Coast competitions.

The Dolphins are a professional rugby league football team based in the Redcliffe Peninsula area of the Moreton Bay Region, that competes in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL). Launched as a bid for inclusion into the NRL by Queensland Cup side Redcliffe Dolphins in 2020, the Dolphins were granted a separate licence in October 2021 to compete as the national league's 17th side from the 2023 season onwards. It is the fourth NRL team in the state of Queensland, including the North Queensland Cowboys based in Townsville, and the third team in South East Queensland along with the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans. The Dolphins are the first team to join the NRL competition since the Gold Coast Titans joined in 2007.

The Townsville District Rugby League (TDRL) is a rugby league football competition in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. The competition is run under the Queensland Rugby League, and features nine clubs, who contest a Premiership season across four senior men's and one senior women's grade from April until August.

The Rockhampton District Rugby League (RDRL) is the administrative body for the game of rugby league football in Rockhampton, Queensland. Formed in 1918 and a part of the Queensland Rugby League's Central Division, the RDRL runs senior, junior and women's club competitions and has its headquarters at Browne Park. The competition changed its name to Rockhampton Senior Local Rugby League in 2018.
