CMAC: The University of Chicago Glee Club is a choral ensemble at the University of Chicago, singing music for tenor and bass voices. Formed in 2005 as the sole glee club at the university, the group consists of both undergraduate and graduate singers with a broad range of musical experience. CMAC performs regularly on campus and throughout the broader Hyde Park and Chicago community, and tours annually to cities around the country.

Founding and History

CMAC was founded as “Chicago Men’s A Cappella” in 2005 by Josh Sauerman and Ben Patterson, two first years in the college. Recognizing a need for an all-male glee chorus at UChicago, they approached Patterson’s vocal instructor, Bruce Tammen. [1] Tammen previously served as choral director at the university and conductor of the University of Virginia Glee Club. [2] The group grew rapidly from its small start, expanding to forty singers by 2008. [3] Many of the group’s long-standing traditions were established during this time, including the practice of quarterly concerts and uniforms. [4] Since then, CMAC has deepened its integral relationship with the community while also expanding onto the national stage. CMAC performs regularly at local events, among them the South Side Pie Challenge and Rockefeller Memorial Chapel’s annual concert of Handel’s Messiah. [5] [4] [6] 2011 saw a performance of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony in Chicago Symphony Hall and the release of their first CD, “Chicago, Hail!” [7] [4] In 2013, the group premiered a setting of the Magnificat at the Monastery of the Holy Cross. [4] CMAC maintains an longstanding artistic relationship with the Chicago Children’s Choir. [4] [8] Meanwhile, the group has toured widely, travelling to Rochester, New York, and to Tammen’s previous post at the University of Virginia, among other locations. [4] [9] CMAC has continued to evolve as time has passed. The group now employs an accompanist, broadening the repertoire substantially. [10] Together with the shift from being a male-only ensemble to simply requiring a low vocal register, this change led to the name being modified to CMAC: The University of Chicago Glee Club. [1] The ensemble has also established itself as an independent choral voice on campus, as it is the only traditional choir not affiliated with the Performance Program of the university’s Department of Music. Tammen retired as director in the Fall of 2019. He was succeeded in an interim capacity by singer and conductor Michael William Myers, who sang in the group from 2015 - 2018. Myers served concurrently as the assistant director of the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel Choir. [1] [11]

Governance and structure

CMAC is a registered student organization (RSO) of the University of Chicago, and receives funding from Student Government, dues, and individual donations. Although it receives funding from the University, it is not a curricular ensemble under the Department of Music, a distinction which sets it apart from many of its peer clubs around the country. Instead, the group is governed by a five member executive board whose members are elected from the ranks of the choir. [12] The board is responsible for setting the direction of the group, maintains relationships with the Hyde Park community and alumni board, and advises the director. As CMAC is not an a cappella group, it is not affiliated with the University of Chicago A Cappella Council, organizing its own auditions instead. [9]

Recordings

CMAC has produced two CD’s in its history: 2011’s Chicago, Hail! And 2018’s Song of the “C.”Chicago, Hail! was produced by Mark Travis, longtime producer for the New York Philharmonic. Harvard Glee Club Choral ensemble

The Harvard Glee Club is a Tenor-Bass choral ensemble at Harvard University. Founded in 1858 in the tradition of English and American glee clubs, it is the oldest collegiate chorus in the US. The Glee Club is part of the Harvard Choruses of Harvard University, which also include the treble voice Radcliffe Choral Society and the mixed-voice Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. All three groups are led by Harvard's current Director of Choral Activities Andrew Gregory Clark.

Bernard Rands is a British-American contemporary classical music composer. He studied music and English literature at the University of Wales, Bangor, and composition with Pierre Boulez and Bruno Maderna in Darmstadt, Germany, and with Luigi Dallapiccola and Luciano Berio in Milan, Italy. He held residencies at Princeton University, the University of Illinois, and the University of York before emigrating to the United States in 1975; he became a U.S. citizen in 1983. In 1984, Rands's Canti del Sole, premiered by Paul Sperry, Zubin Mehta, and the New York Philharmonic, won the Pulitzer Prize for Music. He has since taught at the University of California, San Diego, the Juilliard School, Yale University, and Boston University. From 1988 to 2005 he taught at Harvard University, where he is Walter Bigelow Rosen Professor of Music Emeritus. Radcliffe Choral Society Choral ensemble

The Radcliffe Choral Society(RCS) is a 60-voice treble choral ensemble at Harvard University. Founded in 1899, it is one of the country's oldest soprano-alto choruses and one of its most prominent collegiate choirs. With the tenor-bass Harvard Glee Club and the mixed-voice Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, it is one of the Harvard Choruses. All three groups are led by Harvard Director of Choral Activities Andrew Clark. The RCS Resident Conductor is Meg Weckworth. RCS tours domestically every year and travels internationally every four years.

Cornell University Chorus

The Cornell University Chorus was founded in 1920, initially as the Cornell Women's Glee Club. The Chorus is a sixty-member treble choir, with repertoire including masses, motets, spirituals, classical, folk, 20th-century music, and traditional Cornell songs. Aside from its constantly changing and increasing selection of choral music for treble voices, the Chorus also performs major works with the Cornell University Glee Club such as Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Handel's Messiah, and Bach's Mass in B Minor and St Matthew Passion.

Virginia Glee Club

The Virginia Glee Club is a men's chorus based at the University of Virginia. It performs both traditional and contemporary vocal works, typically in TTBB arrangements. Founded in 1871, the Glee Club is the University's oldest musical organization and one of the oldest all-male collegiate vocal ensembles in the United States. It is currently conducted by Frank Albinder.

The Fairfield University Glee Club is a mixed chorus of more than 100 undergraduate and graduate singers at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. The Glee Club has performed in churches, schools and recital and concert halls throughout Europe, singing from Galway to Rome and Florence to London. Bruce Tammen birth 6./14 1950 is a conductor, choir director, and singer. Tammen holds degrees from Luther College, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago and has taught voice and directed choirs at Luther College, the University of Chicago and area, and the University of Virginia. Tammen studied extensively in France with Dalton Baldwin and Gerard Souzay, and for several years studied with Max van Egmond at Oberlin's Baroque Performance Institute. He has performed several seasons under Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival, and with the Robert Shaw Choral Institute, in Souillac, France. Tammen is baritone soloist on the Telarc/Shaw compact discs Appear and Inspire and Liebeslieder Waltzes. The Chicago Chorale, conducted by Tammen, received the top performance of the year by the Chicago Classical Review with a performance of Rodion Shchedrin's "The Sealed Angel. Bruce Tammen is married to Esther Menn. They have three sons; Joseph, Elijah, and Daniel Tammen, as well as a daughter Kaia Tammen. It is the uncle of William Carl Geisz and Joseph Kelly Geisz.

The Notre Dame Glee Club is a 75-voice, all-male choral ensemble at the University of Notre Dame. Founded in 1915 in the tradition of English and American glee clubs, it is the oldest Glee Club at a Catholic University in the United States.
