The Canon RF lens mount is an interchangeable-lens mount developed by Canon for its full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, and featured first by the EOS R, followed by the EOS RP. [3] [4] [5] The RF mount was announced in September 2018. [6] [7] In May 2022, Canon announced APS-C EOS R cameras (the EOS R10 and EOS R7) and RF-S lenses designed for these cameras. [8]

Contents

The RF mount allows for the use of Canon EF and EF-S mount lenses using one of three Canon-made lens adapters. When an RF-S or EF-S lens is attached, however, the camera will only function as an APS-C camera, not a full-frame camera.

Details

Canon full-frame cameras have used the EF lens mount since 1987. In comparison with that mount, the RF mount's inner diameter is the same at 54 mm. [1] The RF mount's flange focal distance at 20 mm is much shorter than that of the Canon EF and EF-S mounts at 44 mm. The EF-M mount has a flange focal distance of 18 mm.

An EF-EOS R lens adapter enables Canon EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses to be used on cameras that have the RF mount. [9] The three adapters have differing features: [10]

If an EF-EOS R Mount Adapter is used to mount an EF-S lens, the image will have to be cropped by 1.6x due to the smaller image circle on EF-S lenses.

When Canon announced its first R-series body, it announced four new RF-mount lenses: [11]

In conjunction with the February 2019 announcement of the entry-level full-frame EOS RP, Canon announced six additional lenses would be released by the end of that year, although it did not indicate release dates for any of them: [13]

In 2020, Canon introduced seven new RF mount lenses:

In 2021, Canon introduced seven new RF mount lenses:

In 2022, Canon introduced the first RF-S lenses (RF-S 18-150mm and the RF-S 18-45mm) for APS-C Sensors, together with the R7 and R10 camera bodies with the first built in APS-C Sensor in the R-System.

In 2022, Canon introduced seven new RF mount lenses:

In 2023, Canon introduced eight new RF mount lenses:

As of October 2024, Canon has introduced seven new RF mount lenses:

RF-mount lenses are not compatible with EF, EF-S or EF-M mount camera bodies. RF-S lenses can be used on full-frame RF cameras. However, the image will be cropped by 1.6×.

The EF lens mount is the standard lens mount on the Canon EOS family of SLR film and digital cameras. EF stands for "Electro-Focus": automatic focusing on EF lenses is handled by a dedicated electric motor built into the lens. Mechanically, it is a bayonet-style mount, and all communication between camera and lens takes place through electrical contacts; there are no mechanical levers or plungers. The mount was first introduced in 1987.

Canon FD lens mount Standard lens mount on the Canon

The Canon FD lens mount is a physical standard for connecting a photographic lens to a 35mm single-lens reflex camera body. The standard was developed by Canon of Japan and was introduced in March 1971 with the Canon F-1 camera. It served as the Canon SLR interchangeable lens mounting system until the 1987 introduction of the Canon EOS series cameras, which use the newer EF lens mount. The FD mount lingered through the release of the 1990 Canon T60, the last camera introduced in the FD system, and the end of the Canon New F-1 product cycle in 1992.

A kit lens is a "starter" lens which can be sold with an interchangeable-lens camera such as a mirrorless camera or DSLR. It is generally an inexpensive lens priced at the lowest end of the manufacturer's range so as to not add much to a camera kit's price. The kit consists of the camera body, the lens, and various accessories usually necessary to get started. A kit lens can be sold by itself outside of a kit, particularly the ones that are moderately expensive; for instance a kit lens included in a prosumer camera kit is often marketed as an upgrade lens for a consumer camera. In addition, retailers often have promotions of standalone low-end camera bodies without the lens, or a package that bundles a body with one or two more expensive lenses.

Canon EF 50mm lens Family of camera lens

The EF 50mm lenses are a group of normal prime lenses made by Canon that share the same focal length. These lenses are based on the classic double-Gauss lens, with the f/1.8 being a standard six-element double-Gauss with an air gap and powers between element 2 and 3 and its faster cousins adding additional elements. The 50mm focal length, when used with a 35mm film or full-frame sensor, has been widely considered to match the perspective seen by the human eye.

The Canon EF 35mm lenses are a family of wide angle prime lenses with EF mount made by Canon Inc. The family also includes one EF-S lens that only mounts on Canon bodies with APS-C sensors.

The Canon EF-S 17–85mm f/4–5.6 IS USM is a standard zoom lens for Canon digital single-lens reflex cameras with an EF-S lens mount and image stabilization. The EF-S designation means it can only be used on EOS cameras with an APS-C sensor released after 2003. The field of view has a 35 mm equivalent focal length of 27.2–136mm, and it is roughly equivalent to the Canon EF 28-135mm lens on a 35mm film SLR. Despite the word "macro" being present on the lens body, this lens is not capable of true 1:1 macro photography.

Nikon Z-mount is an interchangeable lens mount developed by Nikon for its mirrorless digital cameras. In late 2018, Nikon released two cameras that use this mount, the full-frame Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6. In late 2019 Nikon announced their first Z-mount camera with an APS-C sensor, the Nikon Z50. In July 2020 the entry-level full-frame Z5 was introduced. In October 2020, Nikon announced the Nikon Z6II and Nikon Z7II, which succeed the Z6 and Z7, respectively. The APS-C lineup was expanded in July 2021, with the introduction of the retro styled Nikon Zfc, and in October 2021, Nikon unveiled the Nikon Z9, which effectively succeeds the brand's flagship D6 DSLR. The APS-C lineup was further expanded with the Nikon Z30, announced at the end of June 2022. The Nikon Z6III was announced in June 2024.

The Canon EOS R is the first full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) produced by Canon. It was announced days after Nikon's first full-frame MILC, the Nikon Z 7, and five years after Sony's first, and was released in October 2018. The camera is the first of Canon's new EOS R system, and the first to use the RF lens mount. The "R" stands for "Reimagine optical excellence".

The Canon EOS R5 is a professional full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera officially announced by Canon on July 9, 2020 alongside the lower-resolution EOS R6 and various new RF mount lenses. While it is not a direct successor to any of Canon's previous mirrorless cameras, it does have clear improvements and advantages over the EOS R, namely: a new DIGIC X processor and sensor, 8K video capture, a new autofocus system, and the ability to take videos with 10-bit colours. The camera is available as body only, or with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.
