Charlotte Roller Girls is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 2006, Charlotte Roller Girls is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). [1]

Roller derby contact sport

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating counter-clockwise around a track. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly inside the United States.

Charlotte, North Carolina Largest city in North Carolina

Charlotte is the most populous city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Located in the Piedmont, it is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. In 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population was 859,035, making it the 17th-most populous city in the United States. The Charlotte metropolitan area's population ranks 22nd in the U.S., and had a 2016 population of 2,474,314. The Charlotte metropolitan area is part of a sixteen-county market region or combined statistical area with a 2016 census-estimated population of 2,632,249.

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the international governing body for the sport of women's flat track roller derby, and association of leagues around the world. The organization was founded in April 2004 as the United Leagues Coalition (ULC), but was renamed in November 2005. It is registered in Raleigh, North Carolina as a 501(c)(6) business league organization, a type of nonprofit organization.

History

Charlotte Roller Girls was founded in 2006 as a skater-owned and operated league. [2]

On September 2, 2007, the Charlotte Roller Girls faced the Palmetto State Rollergirls in its first bout. A total of five bouts were held in 2007 and the Charlotte Roller Girls closed out its first season with a 2-3 record.

After competing on the road in 2007, the league was ready to host its first home bout. On January 27, 2008, the Charlotte Roller Girls took on the Columbia Quadsquad. The bout was held at then-named Cricket Arena in Charlotte. A crowd of 1,000 was anticipated yet roughly 2,100 fans attended. [3]

Columbia Quadsquad

The Columbia QuadSquad (CQS) is a roller derby league based in Columbia, South Carolina. Founded in 2007, the league consists of the Allstars, who represent the league in WFTDA interleague competitions around the country, the Miss B-havers, the b-level travel team, and three home teams: the Belles on Wheels, Capitol City Vixens and Spawn of Skatin'. The league also has a junior derby team, the Columbia QuadSquad Minis.

Bojangles Coliseum

Bojangles' Coliseum is an 8,600-seat multi-purpose arena located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is operated by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, which also oversees nearby Ovens Auditorium and the uptown Charlotte Convention Center. The naming-rights sponsor is Bojangles' Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits. The building's signature domed roof is made of tin instead of steel or iron. The dome spans 332 feet in diameter and rises to 112 feet tall.

In 2008, league membership tripled and home bouts enjoyed an average attendance of 1,400 fans. In August, the Block'em Sock'em Rollers and the Cockpit Candies were formed to allow for intra-league competition. The group skated under the Charlotte Roller Girls name for interleague competition. The Charlotte Roller Girls ended the season with an interleague record of 6-3.

The 2009 season brought continued growth to the league. For interleague competition, CLTRG fielded two teams - Charlotte Roller Girls All-Stars and Charlotte Roller Girls B Dazzlers. The intra-league teams are the Block'em Sock'em Rollers, Cockpit Candies and Fraid Knots.

In April, 2010, the Charlotte Roller Girls were accepted into the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice Program. Charlotte's membership in WFTDA was announced in June 2011, [4] initially as part of the WFTDA's East Region. [5]

WFTDA Apprentice Program

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice is the program affiliate of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In operation from 2009 until early 2019, the Apprentice Program served to onboard new member leagues into the WFTDA. In February 2019, the WFTDA announced it was retiring the program, to be replaced with a new "New Member Program" in the near future.

East Region (WFTDA)

The WFTDA's East Region was formed in 2006. In 2009, teams from the western part of the region were moved into the North Central and South Central Regions.

In August, 2010, the league moved from their practice space in Gastonia, North Carolina to a new practice space in the NoDa neighborhood in Charlotte.

Gastonia is the largest city in and county seat of Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. It is also the second largest satellite city of the Charlotte area, behind Concord. The population was 71,741 at the 2010 Census. In 2016, the population had increased to 75,536. Gastonia is the 13th largest city in North Carolina. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area, officially designated the Charlotte Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Gastonia has experienced steady growth, with a population increase between 2000 and 2010 of nearly 8.2%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In 2013, the CLTRG All-Stars became a WFTDA Division 2 team, moving up to one of the top 100 ranked WFTDA leagues internationally. [6]

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 2 was the second-highest level of play in women's flat track roller derby from 2013 through 2017. Comprising different structures over that time, in early 2018 the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) announced it was replacing the Division 2 Playoffs with geographically-based Continental Cups, the structure and quantity of which is expected to adjust and possibly expand over time.
