Chelsea Rose (foaled 11 February 2002) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a track career which lasted from June 2004 until September 2006 she raced in four different countries and won five races over distances ranging from six furlongs to one and a half miles. She showed very promising form as a juvenile in 2004 when she won two of her three races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year she failed in the Irish Oaks, her principal objective but recorded victories in the Silver Stakes, Ballyroan Stakes and Dance Design Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2006 she failed to win a race but finished second in the Glencairn Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes and Royal Whip Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Background

Chelsea Rose is a chestnut mare with a white blaze and a long white sock on her right hind leg bred in Ireland by the County Kildare-based Airlie Stud. [2] As a yearling she was consigned to the Tattersalls sale in October 2003 and was bought for 38,000 guineas by Emerald Bloodstock. [3] The filly entered the ownership of Frances Donnelly and was sent into training with Con Collins at the Curragh. She was ridden in all but two of her races by Pat Shanahan.

She was from the fourth crop of foals sired by Desert King whose wins included the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Irish Derby in 1997. As breeding stallion he had considerable success in both Europe and Australia, with his offspring including Makybe Diva, Desert War and Mr Dinos [4] Chelsea Rose's dam Cinnamon Rose showed modest racing ability, winning one minor race from nine starts. [5] She was descended from Senones, a full-sister to the Prix du Jockey Club winner Sicambre. [6]

Racing career

2004: two-year-old season

On her racecourse debut Chelsea Rose started the 11/2 fourth choice in the betting in a thirteen-runner maiden race over seven furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse on 9 June. Racing on good to firm ground she headed the Aidan O'Brien-trained favourite Silk And Scarlet a furlong out and won "comfortably" by two lengths. [7] On 8 August the filly was stepped up in class for the Group 2 Debutante Stakes over the same distance at the Curragh but after disputing the lead for most of the way she was overtaken in the closing stages and came home third behind Silk And Scarlet and Luas Line.

Despite her defeat in the Debutante, Chelsea Rose was moved up to Group 1 class for the Moyglare Stud Stakes over the same course and distance on 5 September and started at odds of 9/1 in a twelve-runner field. Silk And Scarlet started favourite, while the other fancied runners included Jewel In The Sand (winner of the Albany Stakes and Cherry Hinton Stakes), Saoire, Slip Dance (Empress Stakes) and the Jim Bolger-trained Pictavia. After racing just behind the leaders as Drama set the pace, Chelsea Rose went to the front two and a half furlongs from the finish and stayed on well to repel several challengers in the closing stages. She crossed the finishing line three quarters of a length in front of Pictavia, with Saoire, Umniya, Belle Artiste and Silk And Scarlet close behind. [8]

Pat Shanahan, who had won the Irish Oaks on the Collins-trained Princess Pati in 1984 said "It's fantastic to ride another group one for Con after all the years we've worked together. My filly traveled really well and as I knew she would stay I decided to kick on almost three (furlongs) down. The ground wasn't ideal for her – she likes a bit of an ease – but it wasn't as fast as it was when she ran here last month and that helped her". [9] Con Collins commented "I thought she had a bit of a chance, but they were good fillies in the race and it was hard to be confident. I thought she would run well, but I didn't back her. I haven't backed one for about three years. The money is so good when you win a race these days, there is no point". [9] Collins' daughter Tracy added "We deliberately didn't enter her in the Guineas because we've always felt anything she did this year would be a bonus. Her career next year will be planned around the Irish Oaks". [10]

2005: three-year-old season

Chelsea Rose missed the first part of the 2005 season, and returned to the track in the Silver Stakes over ten furlongs at Lepardstown on 8 June in which she was matched against male opposition and older horses including Sublimity, Solskjaer (Royal Whip Stakes) and Napper Tandy (Diamond Stakes). Carrying a seven-pound weight penalty for her Group 1 win she took the lead in the straight and rallied after being headed by the favourite Merger to regain the advantage and win by a head. [11] In the Pretty Polly Stakes two weeks later she started second favourite but ran poorly and came home ninth of ten runners behind Alexander Goldrun. In the Irish Oaks in July she was moved up in distance but made no impact and finished unplaced in a race won by the French-trained Shawanda.

On 14 August Chelsea Rose was theoretically dropped to Listed class for the Ballyroan Stakes over one and a half miles at Leopardstown and started third choice in the betting behind Shalapour (third in the Irish Derby) and Vinnie Roe. After racing at the rear of the field she moved up on the outside to make her challenge in the straight, by which point Vinnie Roe had gone to the front. Shalapour overtook Vinnie Roe a furlong out, but Chelsea Rose produced a sustained run to take the lead in the closing stages and won by three quarters of a length. [12] Tracey Collins commented "She is very tough and genuine and the horses are only now starting to run well". [13] Three weeks later the filly returned to all-female competition and started 2/1 favourite for the Listed Dance Design Stakes over nine furlongs at the Curragh. She raced in third place before going to the front a furlong and a half from the finish and drew away from her opponents to win "easily" by two lengths from Pictavia. [14]

The Dance Design Stakes proved to be Chelsea Rose's last victory. In the Blandford Stakes at the Curragh September she stayed on in the straight without ever looking likely to win and finished fourth to the British-trained favourite Red Bloom. In October she was sent to Italy and came home third of the nine runners behind Dubai Surprise in the Group 1 Premio Lydia Tesio.

2006: four-year-old season

As a four-year-old, Chelsea Rose failed to win in six races but ran well in defeat on several occasions. Ridden by Willie Supple in her first two races, she finished fourth in the Blue Wind Stakes at Naas Racecourse in May, and then failed by a neck to hold off the late challenge of Mustameet in the Listed Glencairn Stakes at Leopardstown. In the Pretty Polly Stakes on 1 July she produced her best effort when she rallied after being headed inside the final furlong but narrowly failed to overhaul the favored Alexander Goldrun. [15] In August she ran for the only time in England and finished fourth to Ouija Board in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, before returning to the Curragh to run second to Mustameet when favourite for the Royal Whip Stakes. For her final start Chelsea Rose was sent to France to contest the Prix de Royallieu over 2500 metres at Longchamp Racecourse on 30 September. She reached second place in the straight but then faded and finished seventh of the eight runners.

Breeding record

At the end of her racing career, Chelsea Rose was retired to become a broodmare at the Airlie Stud. In November 2012, the mare was auctioned at the Goffs sale and was bought for €450,000 by the bloodstock agency BBA Ireland. [16] The agency's representative Adrian Nicoll commented "she was the standout mare here today... we know she produces good-looking stock and that's half the battle". In a racing career which lasted from August 1997 to September 1998 the filly ran eleven times and won three races. Shahtoush won only one minor race as a two-year-old, but showed top-class form when she finished third in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes. In 1998 she finished second in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse and then returned to England to win the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She was beaten in her two remaining races, finishing unplaced in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Irish Champion Stakes.

Lillie Langtry (horse) Irish Thoroughbred racehorse

Lillie Langtry is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred at a small stud in County Cork she was sold as a yearling and raced for the Coolmore organisation. As a two-year-old, she was one of the best juvenile fillies in Ireland winning three of her seven races including the Fillies' Sprint Stakes, Debutante Stakes and Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800 as well as finishing third in both the Albany Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was injured when finishing unplaced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In 2010 she recorded her biggest wins when recording Group One victories in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. She was retired at the end of the year with a record of five wins from eleven races.

Minding (horse) Irish Thoroughbred racehorse

Minding is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She was among the leading two-year-old fillies of her generation in Europe in 2015 when she won three of her five races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland and the Fillies' Mile in England. On her first appearance of 2016 the filly posted a decisive victory in the classic 1000 Guineas but was subsequently beaten when favourite for the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She went on to win a second classic in The Oaks in June, the first filly to complete the Guineas-Oaks double since Kazzia in 2002. She went on to take her fifth and sixth Group One races with wins in the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. She then defeated male opposition to take the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. At the end of the year she was named Cartier Horse of the Year and the world's best three-year-old filly. She won on her reappearance in 2017 but subsequently suffered an injury which led to her retirement later that year without racing again.

Saoire is a Welsh-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2005. After being sold cheaply as a foal she was eventually sent into training with Frances Crowley in Ireland. In four races as a two-year-old in 2004 she showed very promising form, winning a maiden race and finishing placed in both the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following spring she finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest victory in the Irish equivalent three weeks later. Her victory made her the first Irish Classic Race winner to be trained by a woman. She was well beaten in three subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year.

Bethrah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2010. After finishing unplaced on her only run as a two-year-old she reached her peak in the following spring, winning a maiden race and the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial before taking the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was well beaten in her only subsequent race and was retired at the end of the year.

Winona was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until November 1998 she raced in four different countries and compiled a record of two wins one second and one third from nine starts. As a two-year-old in 1997 she showed considerable promise when winning on her first appearance and later finished second in the Group 3 C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following year she finished fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and third in the Coronation Stakes before being stepped up in distance and recording an emphatic win in the Irish Oaks. She was well beaten in her last two races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Her record as a broodmare was poor.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

Rebelline was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won six of her eleven races in a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until May 2002. As a juvenile she won on her debut and then finished second to Vinnie Roe in the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following year she won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing third in the Prix de l'Opéra. She reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2002 when she was undefeated in three starts, taking the Gladness Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Eva Luna (IRE) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. At the age of two in 1994 she was one of the best horses of her generation in Ireland when she won her first five races including the Silver Flash Stakes, Railway Stakes and Phoenix Stakes. Her winning run came to an end when she finished third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, and in 1993 she failed to recapture her juvenile form. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and produced a few minor winners. The last of her recorded offspring was foaled in 2010.

La Collina is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2011 she won a minor race on her debut and went on to record a 33/1 upset win over a strong field in the Phoenix Stakes. She failed to win in eleven races over the next two years before springing another surprise when taking the 2013 Matron Stakes at odds of 25/1. Apart from her wins, she was placed in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes, Blue Wind Stakes, Gladness Stakes and Abu Dhabi Stakes.

Happily (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Happily is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2017 she was one of best of her generation in Europe, winning four of her seven races including two at Group 1 level. After finishing unplaced on her debut she won a maiden race and the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes before running second to her stablemate Magical in the Debutante Stakes. She reversed the form to beat Magical in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then defeated male opposition to take the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. At the end of the season she was voted Cartier Champion Two-year-old Filly. In the following year she was placed in the 1000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas and Sun Chariot Stakes.

Termagant is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland, winning both of her races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. She failed to win again and ran only four more times over the next two years before being retired from racing.

Miss Beatrix is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2006 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland when she won three of eight races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Million as well as finishing third in the Phoenix Stakes. She ran unplaced in the 1000 Guineas in the following spring and was retired from racing later that year.

Preseli is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Ireland in 1999 when she was undefeated in three races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following spring she took her winning streak to four when she won the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial but was beaten in her next three races that year, producing her best subsequent effort when narrowly beaten in the Pretty Polly Stakes. In 2001 she raced in North America, but failed to reproduce her European form. As a broodmare she has produced several minor winners.

Skitter Scatter American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Skitter Scatter is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2018, she won one minor race in her first four starts but then made rapid improvement to win the Silver Flash Stakes, Debutante Stakes and Moyglare Stud Stakes. At the end of the season she was named Cartier Champion Two-year-old Filly.

Love (horse) Irish Thoroughbred racehorse

Love is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed top-class form as a juvenile in 2019 when she won three of her seven races including the Silver Flash Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes as well as running third in the Fillies' Mile. On her first appearance as a three-year-old she won the 1000 Guineas, following up with a facile victory in the Oaks Stakes and a similar win in the Yorkshire Oaks.

Albigna Irish-bred racehorse

Albigna is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best European juvenile fillies of 2019 when she won three of her five races. She won a maiden race on her debut and then stepped up in class to win the Airlie Stud Stakes. After running poorly in the Moyglare Stud Stakes she returned to form to take the Prix Marcel Boussac. On her final run of the year she finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Shale is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2020 she made steady progress, winning a minor race on her second start and going on to take the Silver Flash Stakes and finishing second in the Debutante Stakes before winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.
