The Chicago Union are a professional ultimate team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Union compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the Central Division. The team was originally branded as the Windy City Wildfire. In their first year, the Wildfire had the best record in the then-Midwest Division and qualified for the playoffs in its first three seasons. They play home games at Martin Stadium on the campus of Northwestern University. [1]
In March 2012, Steve Gordon purchased the territory rights based in Chicago as part of the first wave of expansion to begin play in the 2013 season. [2]
The Windy City Wildfire found a home field at Lane Tech College Prep. The inaugural season began in April 2013, and culminated with a 14–2 regular season record. The season ended with a first round playoff loss to the Madison Radicals.
Going into the 2014 season, team ownership made the decision to legally change the name of the franchise to the Chicago Wildfire. The second season provided a strong 9–5 record and gave the team a second-place finish in the division. The team ended the season with a first round playoff loss to the New York Empire.
In 2015, the organization decided to shift 5 of their 7 home games to Benedictine University, which is located in Lisle, Illinois. The season yielded an 8–5–1 record, allowing for a third-place finish in the division, and a postseason appearance against the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds. The post season was short lived, as the Chicago Wildfire fell to the Thunderbirds, ending their 2015 season.
For the 2016 season, all home games were moved back to the original home field of Lane Tech College Prep. The Wildfire fell to a record of 4–10 which tied them for 5th in the division with the Detroit Mechanix, and did not make the playoffs.
On January 1, 2017, Steve Gordon signed on Trent Kuhl as General Manager of the Chicago Wildfire. Former player and Assistant Coach Adrian King was named Head Coach, while Andrew "AJ" Nelson joined the coaching ranks as Assistant Coach. Returner Jack Shey and first time player Pawel Janas were elected as captains for the 2017 season. The Wildfire finished 3–11, but the future looked bright for the young core of talent on the team.
For the 2018 season, Adrian King returned as head coach. The team improved with a 5–9 record for the season.
The team moved to Benedetti–Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Illinois, for the season. [3]
In 2019, former player Dave Woods, took the reins from Adrian King and became the head coach of the Chicago Wildfire. Pawel Janas had a record breaking season for assists. The Wildfire finished at 7–5 and earned their first playoff bid since 2015. The team fell to Pittsburgh losing 21–20, ending their season.
The offseason allowed the Chicago Wildfire to take the big stage against the Indianapolis Alley Cats. The two teams battled at Soldier Field during the Chicago Bears halftime show. Over 60,000 fans attended the AUDL game as the Wildfire defeated the Alley Cats in the exhibition. [4]
Weeks before the season was set to start, the league canceled the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the world. The Chicago Wildfire decided to retire the name and create an opportunity for a rebranding moment. After receiving many options from fans, the new era for Chicago professional ultimate will be represented by the Chicago Union. [5]
In 2021, the Chicago Union finished first in the Central Division with a 10–2 record. In the first round of the playoffs the Union won their first playoff game, defeating Minnesota 22–18. They lost to New York in the semifinals 22–18.
In 2022, The Union finished first in the central division with an 11-1 record. They made it to the Championship but ultimately lost to the New York Empire. Kyle Rutledge was AUDL First Team All-Rookie. Pawel Janas was selected to the First Team All-AUDL.
In 2023, The Union finished third in the central division with a 6–6 record. They lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Indianapolis Alleycats 23–15.
The Union ended the 2024 season with a record of 7-5. While the Union finished third in the division, they did make it to the playoffs, but were narrowly defeated by the Madison Radicals in a thrilling double-overtime match.
This season marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Union as they started hosting games at Martin Stadium at Northwestern University. [6]

Chicago Union Cares is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established by the Chicago Union organization in 2024. Its mission is to inspire youth to reach their full potential through the power of ultimate frisbee. Chicago Union Cares focuses on inclusivity and aims to bring the joy of ultimate frisbee to underserved communities, supporting efforts to make ultimate an IHSA sport and eventually an Olympic sport. The non-profit is led by experienced professionals and works closely with schools and community-based organizations to extend its reach and impact. [7]
The Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) is a professional ultimate league in North America composed of 23 teams divided between the South, Central, East, and West divisions. Each UFA season has 12 regular season games which run from April to July. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the top three teams from every division advance to the playoffs, a single elimination tournament that culminates in a final four style showcase known as the UFA Championship Weekend, which is contested in late August over two days.
The Toronto Rush are a professional ultimate team based in Toronto, Ontario. The Rush compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the East Division.
The Philadelphia Phoenix are a professional ultimate team based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Phoenix compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the East Division. The team is owned and operated by Main Line Today's "Woman on The Move" Christina Lee Chung, MD, FAAD. From 2020 to 2021 the Phoenix competed in the Atlantic Division. The team's home field is located on the campus of Neumann University.
The New York Empire are a professional ultimate team based in the New York metropolitan area. The Empire compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the East Division. The team played its first season in 2013. The Empire won their first title in 2019, followed by titles in 2022 and 2023.
The Cincinnati Revolution were a professional ultimate disc team based in Cincinnati, Ohio who competed in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL), now known as the Ultimate Frisbee Association, from 2012 to 2016. The Revolution played in the AUDL's Western Division in 2012 and in the Midwestern/Midwest Division from 2013 until their dissolution in 2016. They played their home games as the Bluegrass Revolution in 2012 at Henry Clay High School's Jack Bell Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky, and as the Cincinnati Revolution from 2013 to 2016 at the University of Cincinnati's Sheakley Athletics Center.
The Carolina Flyers, formerly the Raleigh Flyers, are a professional ultimate team based in Durham, North Carolina. The Flyers compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the South Division. The team was founded in 2015. From 2015 through 2018, the Flyers played most of their home games at Crusader Stadium on the campus of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, with some home games at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. In 2019, the team has played home games at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, and other venues. After the 2020 AUDL season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team moved their home games to Durham County Stadium beginning in 2021. In 2022, the team announced that it was changing its name to the Carolina Flyers. The team had won the national title once in 2021.
The Madison Radicals are a professional ultimate team based in Madison, Wisconsin. The Radicals compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the Central Division. The team plays its home games at Breese Stevens Field in downtown Madison. Since the team's inception in 2013, they have won five regular season divisional titles in eight seasons. After losing in the AUDL championship games in 2013 and 2015, the Radicals claimed its first championship in 2018. Madison also hosted AUDL Championship Weekends in 2016, 2018 and 2022, winning the championship in 2018.
The Pittsburgh Thunderbirds are a professional ultimate team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Thunderbirds compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the Central Division. They play their home games at Highmark Stadium, a soccer stadium in Pittsburgh's Station Square.
The Minnesota Wind Chill are a professional ultimate team based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Wind Chill compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the Central Division. They are one of two teams in the UFA to represent a state rather than a specific city. The team won their first UFA Championship in 2024, beating the Carolina Flyers 17-16.
The Oakland Spiders are a professional ultimate team based in Oakland, California. The Spiders compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the West Division. The team was founded as the San Jose Spiders in 2014 when the league expanded to the West Coast, and played under that name until moving to Oakland in 2022. The Spiders won the National Championship in their first season and became the first team in the league's history to win consecutive titles when they defeated the Madison Radicals in the 2015 championship game.
The DC Breeze are a professional ultimate team based in Washington, D.C. The Breeze compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the East Division. The team first played in the 2013 season. The Breeze play at Carlini Field.
The 2015 American Ultimate Disc League season was the fourth season for the league. Each team played a 14-game schedule. The San Jose Spiders won the AUDL Championship over the Madison Radicals at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California. The Spiders won the championship despite entering the final four with the lowest seed after a regular-season finish of 10-4.
The Austin Sol are a professional ultimate team based in Austin, Texas. The Sol compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the South Division. The team was founded in 2016, and played its first match on April 2, 2016. The Sol play their home games at The Pitch. The owner and general manager of the Sol is Patrick Christmas, the head coach is Steven Naji, and the assistant general manager is Ryan Purcell.
The Atlanta Hustle are a professional ultimate team based in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Hustle compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the South Division.
The Dallas Legion, formerly the Dallas Roughnecks, were a professional ultimate team that competed in the South Division of the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA). Founded in 2015, the team played their first year in the 2016 AUDL season, wherein they won the championship title.
The Los Angeles Aviators are a professional ultimate team based in the Greater Los Angeles area. The Aviators compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the West Division. The team played their first season in 2015.
The San Diego Growlers are a professional ultimate team based in San Diego, California. The Growlers compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the West Division. The team plays its home games at Mission Bay High School. The Growlers began play in the 2015 season.
The Oregon Steel are a professional ultimate team based in Portland, Oregon. The Steel compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the West Division. The team plays its home games at Providence Park. Their first season was in 2022, and they rebranded as the Steel after the 2024 season.
The Salt Lake Shred are a professional ultimate team based in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The Shred compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the West Division. The team plays its home games at Zions Bank Stadium, a soccer stadium in Herriman, Utah.
The Colorado Summit are a professional ultimate team based in the Denver metropolitan area. The Summit compete in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) as a member of the West Division. The team plays its home games at the Colorado School of Mines' Marv Kay Stadium.
