Chonopeltis is a genus of fish lice in the subclass Branchiura. These crustaceans are ectoparasitic freshwater fish host. Species of this genus are exclusively found in rivers in Africa. [1] [2]

Description

Members of this genus do not grow any larger than a few millimetres. They have flat bodies covered by a carapace, and have two large suction cups, one on either side their heads. These suction cups are used to attach to their hosts. Chonopeltis feed on various tissues, including mucus, internal fluids, and sloughed-off scales. [3]

The genus Chonopeltis is distinguished from the genus Argulus due to its lack of a preoral spine and from Dolops by the presence of suckers rather than hooks. [4]

Reproduction and life cycle

Mating and larval development of Chonopeltis occur on the host. Gravid females do not leave the host to lay eggs, as they are poor swimmers. [5] This is in contrast to other members of the family Argulidae, who must leave their hosts to mate. Unlike many other crustaceans, female Chonopeltis do not carry the fertilised eggs in an egg sac, but they deposit their eggs on a substrate. To lay they eggs, the females do not leave the fish host, but lean off. [5]

The species Chonopeltis minutus may be extinct as it has not been observed since 1974. [6]

Gnathia pilosus is the eighth gnathiid species to be described from South Africa. Adults can be found in groups with a single male and up to 43 females and immature specimens. The free-living adults do not feed and are usually hidden in a cavity or sponge where reproduction will occur. The larvae of gnathiid isopods are known to parasitise a large variety of intertidal fish worldwide. The taxonomic classification of gnathiids is usually based on the morphological characteristics of the adult male. The detailed descriptions of the female and larva, however, are also important for identifying these life stages to species level when collected in the absence of males.

Dipteropeltis hirundo is a little-known species of fish louse. It is an ectoparasite of fish found in South America, including piranhas and barred sorubim.

Argulus japonicus, also known as the Japanese fish louse, is a species of crustacean in the family Argulidae. This species is light brown in colour and may be between 4 and 9 mm long and 3 to 6 mm wide. It has a stumpy tail, and is shaped somewhat like a round shield. The female and male are phenotypically distinct, categorizing them as a dioecious species. Although they are not drastically different, their transparent skin highlights the minor differences such as the different copulatory accessories.

Acanthochondria cornuta is a species of parasitic copepod from the northeast Atlantic Ocean, and the type species of the genus Acanthochondria. It infects the gills of several species of flatfish, particularly the European flounder. Copepodids and immature females infect the holobranch of the host, while adult females prefer the pseudobranch and the internal wall, suggesting they migrate upstream in the gills of the host as they mature.

Ergasilus curticrus is a freshwater parasitic copepod named in 2015. Described from the Orinoco river basin, it was found solely to be hosted by individuals of the Characiform fish species Bryconops giacopinii. Of those located in South America, it is one of only five species in its genus to be found outside of Brazil.

<i>Myzobdella lugubris</i> Leech species

Myzobdella lugubris, the crab leech, is a species of jawless leech widespread in North America, especially in central and Eastern Canada. It is an ectoparasite of fish and crustaceans, and is responsible for several dangerous conditions in fish, including lesions infected by bacteria and fungi and possibly viral hemorrhagic septicemia. It lays its egg capsules on crabs and possible other arthropods, which then disperse the eggs.

<i>Argulus coregoni</i> Parasitic of crustacean

The carp louse Argulus coregoni is an obligate ectoparasitic branciuran species on fish. It occurs in China and Japan, and Scandinavia. Argulus coregoni can pose a threat to fish kept in fish farms.
