Chuka University is a public university in Kenya. [3]
The main university campus is located in the town of Chuka, in Tharaka-Nithi County, along the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya. This location is along the Nairobi-Meru Highway, approximately 172 kilometres (107 mi) northeast of Nairobi, the country's capital city. [4] The elevation of the university campus is approximately 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above mean sea level.
The institution was established on 27 September 2004, by Egerton University Council, as a campus of that university. In 2007, through legal notice No. 161 of 2007 the campus was transformed into "Chuka University College", the successor of the former Egerton University Eastern Campus College, Chuka. [5] President Mwai Kibaki, the country's head of state granted full university charter status to Chuka University on 8 January 2013. [6]
Professor Erastus Njoka was the university's first vice chancellor, serving in that capacity for the 17 years from 2004 until 2022, when he left to join Kenyan elective politics. He was succeeded in acting capacity by Professor Dorcas Itsusa, who previously served as the deputy vice chancellor for academic affairs, research and student affairs. [2] In June 2023, Professor Henry Mutembei was named as the new substantive vice chancellor, having previously served as deputy vice chancellor for administration, finance, planning and development. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is a public university that is situated in Juja, 36 kilometres northeast of Nairobi, along the Nairobi-Thika SuperHighway, off Exit 15. It offers courses in Technology, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Management and Building sciences and holds a strong research interest in the areas of biotechnology and engineering. Joint Admission Board of Kenya (JAB) was the body that was mandated to conduct a joint admission exercise of students who have cleared secondary school into the Universities. The main aim was to ensure that only those who have attained a certain number of points are given priority to join the universities under a government sponsorship. The admission exercise was done annually at the beginning of every academic year and students who sat their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) the previous year are the ones considered.
Meru University of Science and Technology is a public university in Tigania West Constituency Meru, Kenya. It is in Meru County, 15 kilometres northeast of Meru Town, along the Meru-Makutano-Maua Highway.
Sub-counties, formerly known as Districts, are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. The sub-counties are further divided into divisions, locations and sub-locations.
