Zetech University is a private university in Kiambu County, Kenya. [1] Zetech University was founded by Engineer Ken Mbiuki in 1997 and is registered by the Ministry of Education. [2]

The University comprises three schools:

The current chancellor is Professor Susan Alfano, PhD and the Vice Chancellor is Professor Njenga Munene, BVM, MSc, PhD, Adv. Prot (Obihiro-Japan).

History

Although Zetech University was officially founded in 1999, Eng. Ken Mbiuki had been offering basic IT training in his dorm room since 1997, where he operated under the name Zenith Technologies while pursuing his undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi. At the time, computing technology was fairly new in Kenya.

In 1999, Eng. Ken Mbiuki leased office space in Summit House and registered an academic institution under the name Zetech College – a fusion of the words 'Zenith' and 'Technology'. The college initially offered purely Information Technology based courses and has slowly grown over the years. It was accredited by the Commission for University Education and fully chartered as Zetech University in 2022.

Campuses

Zetech University has four campuses:

Ruiru Campus

This structured, state-of-the-art University Complex is located along Thika Road in Ruiru town, Kiambu County, Kenya. It symbolises the university's transition into a fully-fledged chartered University offering diploma, degree and postgraduate programmes. Students who complete their curriculum successfully earn a Zetech University Degree. The campus boasts of modern media studios, design and editing suites, computer laboratories and state-of-the-art kitchen facilities. The campus was officially inaugurated by the President of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta in 2015.

Technology Park Mang'u Campus

Focused on fostering innovation and technological advancements, this campus emphasises hands-on learning and cutting-edge technology. The campus hosts the University's Innovation Hub (iZet Hub), the University's Africa Center for Data Analytics and Modelling, and the Institute for Aging Studies. The campus boasts high-tech advancements from RFID technologies, smart classrooms, ICT and Science laboratories.

Nairobi City Campus

Strategically situated in the Kenya's Capital City, this campus caters to students who prefer an urban learning environment, the working-class, providing accessibility to city resources and conveniences. The Nairobi City Campus has two strategic locations, one at the Pioneer Building and the other at Stanbank.

Zetech Digital School

This campus serves as a virtual platform for online learning, enabling students to pursue education remotely with flexible schedules and access to quality resources. Zetech University boasts as the first University to receive Open Distance and e-learning Center (ODeL) accreditation.

Library

The 1000-seat capacity library in the Zetech University Technology Park Mang'u Campus facility serves as Zetech University's main Library, with superior facilities including computers to access the e-library. The facility comprises approximately 2,500 titles and incorporates computer-based learning support facilities to provide access to up-to-date research information. The library also features wi-fi Internet access as well as an automated Integrated Library System. [3] The same library collections are also housed in its Ruiru Campus and Nairobi City Campus.

Academic programmes

Zetech University offers a wide range of certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate programmes to both government-sponsored and self-sponsored students.

The University also provides digital learning through the Zetech Digital School.

Online blended learning

The University is keen on fulfilling the promise of timely completion, transitioning all its students and programmes to blended learning. Blended learning is the integration of classroom face-to-face learning experiences with online learning experiences. The collaborative training format incorporates different modes of training to mirror face to face learning, including live classes via the BigBlueButton and other video conferencing platforms such as WebEx and Zoom, online interactive classes via an interactive Learning Management System, pre-recorded videos from lecturers and online group sessions. Enrolment

The University has intakes every January, May and September, enrolling both Government and self-sponsored students.

The Zetech University student body is governed by the Zetech University Students' Association (ZUSA), which provides student representation within and outside the institution.

Sports and recreation

The University has robust Football, Basketball, Rugby, Volleyball, Karate and Martial Arts teams with the University players getting regular National Team Call Ups to represent Kenya in international competitions. Other sporting activities that students engage in include Scrabble, Table Tennis, and Chess. The Zetech Titans football men's and Zetech Sparks ladies' teams are the reigning Universities and Colleges Football Leagues (UCFL) champions having won titles over the years and currently play in the FKF Leagues, Division One and Kenya Women Premier League respectively. Additionally, the teams topped the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) 2018–19 games to emerge on top.

The Zetech Titans Basketball men's and Zetech Sparks ladies' team are the reigning Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA National Champions and currently play in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) leagues Division one and Women's Premier league respectively. While the Zetech Oaks Rugby team have been recently crowned as the Kenya Rugby Union Champions and currently playing in the KRU Championship

Clubs and societies

Health and counseling

The university offers a Health and Counseling Centre which operates as a single service provider for professional medical and counseling services to students. The facility is open from 8 am to 6 pm and can handle emergencies such as chest pain, seizures, and injuries. They also educate students on various health emergency procedures for emergency purposes.

Religion

The Universities mandate is primarily the pursuit of secular education. The institution, however, subscribes to values of the Christian Faith. Students from diverse religious backgrounds are allowed to practice their faith without hindrance, so long as these practices do not make demands on or interfere with the smooth running of university operations, and university academic programs in particular. All students are expected to accord due respect and exhibit tolerance towards members of the different faiths.[ citation needed ]

The Nationwide League is a domestic Kenyan rugby union competition. Full members of the Kenya Rugby Union that do not participate in the top tier Kenya Cup are entitled to participate in the league. It operates in a system of promotion and relegation with the Kenya Cup. Matches are played on Saturday afternoons, usually before fixtures in the Kenya Cup.

St. Paul's University, is a private Christian ecumenical University with its main campus in Limuru, Kiambu County Kenya. The students and staff of the University come from all over the world.
