Ruaraka is an industrial and residential suburb in the city of Nairobi. Located within the larger sub-county of Kasarani, it is approximately 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) northeast of Nairobi's central business district off Thika Road.
Ruaraka is located approximately 8 kilometres (5 mi) northeast of Nairobi's central business district, within the sub-county of Kasarani. It is straddled by the Outer Ring, Baba Dogo and the Thika roads.
Ruaraka came to being in 1922 when two Welsh brothers Charles and George Hurst, and a friend H. A. Dowding, gained interest in an inhabitated area along a river known as Rui-Rwa-Aka, that reserved for the Kikuyu girls during circumcision. Along the banks of the river, the brothers picked an expansive land to set up the very first brewery in British Kenya known as Kenya Breweries. [1] The brewery fate later became uncertain when one of the proprietors was George Hurst was killed by an elephant. To honour his memory, his brother named the new beer Tusker. [2] [3]
In 1938, Taylor and Company, owned by entrepreneur William Taylor, was established in the area. Later in 1951, Ind Coope and Allsopp (East Africa) Limited bought a controlling interest that brought forth the launching the Pilsner and Allsopps beer brands in the Kenyan market. Kenya Breweries would later buy Allsopps and Pilsner to form the East African Breweries Limited (EABL). [1] [3]
In 1960, a Danish businessman, Baron U. Akerhielm, established another factory to supply EABL with brewery tanks. [1] [3]
Over the years Ruaraka area has seen significant growth in establishment of other industrial plants, making it a major industrial hub in Nairobi.
Allsops, Baba Dogo and the Tusker Village, neighbourhoods form part of the Ruaraka.
Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. Charles and George Hurst founded Kenya Breweries Limited in 1922 producing Tusker Lager. The name Tusker came about in memory of George who was trampled to death by a rogue male elephant in 1923.
Kasarani Constituency is an electoral constituency in Nairobi. It is one of seventeen constituencies of Nairobi City County. The entire constituency is located within Nairobi City County, and has an area of 152.60 km2 (58.9 sq mi), making it the second-largest constituency in Nairobi after Lang'ata. It borders Ruaraka, Embakasi Central, Embakasi North, Embakasi East, Roysambu constituencies to the west; Ruiru constituency to the north; Matungulu constituency to the east and Mavoko constituency to the south-east.
Tusker is a beer brand owned by East African Breweries, with over 700,000 hectolitres being sold in Kenya per year. It is also the largest African beer brand in the Diageo group. It is a 4.2% ABV pale lager. The beer's slogan "Bia yangu, Nchi yangu" means "My beer, My country" in Kiswahili.

Mwiki is a low-income neighbourhood in the counties of Nairobi and Kiambu. It is approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) northeast of the central business district of Nairobi. Due to its transregional nature, the part of Mwiki that is within Nairobi is referred as Kasarani Mwiki while the other portion domiciled in Kiambu is referred as Githurai Mwiki.
