Johan Christian Fabricius was a Danish zoologist, specialising in "Insecta", which at that time included all arthropods: insects, arachnids, crustaceans and others. He was a student of Carl Linnaeus, and is considered one of the most important entomologists of the 18th century, having named nearly 10,000 species of animals, and established the basis for the modern insect classification.
Pierre André Latreille was a French zoologist, specialising in arthropods. Having trained as a Roman Catholic priest before the French Revolution, Latreille was imprisoned, and only regained his freedom after recognising a rare beetle species he found in the prison, Necrobia ruficollis.
The Scoliidae, the scoliid wasps, are a family of about 560 species found worldwide. They tend to be black, often marked with yellow or orange, and their wing tips are distinctively corrugated. Males are more slender and elongated than females, with significantly longer antennae, but the sexual dimorphism is not as apparent as in the Tiphiidae.
The Cucujidae, "flat bark beetles," are a family of distinctively flat beetles found worldwide under the bark of dead trees. The family has received considerable taxonomic attention in recent years and now consists of 59 species distributed in four genera.
Coelophora inaequalis, the variable ladybird, common Australian lady beetle or common Australian ladybug is a ladybird species endemic to Australia, Oceania and Southern Asia. The variable ladybird gets its name from the black markings on the adult elytra, that vary from one individual to another.
Aphodius is a genus of beetles in the family Scarabaeidae. In most species both the adults and larvae are coprophagous although some species have herbivorous or saprophagous larvae. Aphodius species typically dominate dung beetle communities in north temperate ecosystems. Most species are functionally classified as endocoprids, also known as dwellers, because the larvae live and feed within the dung pat itself.
Pidonia is a genus of beetles in the family Cerambycidae, containing the following species:
Pachyteria is a genus of round-necked longhorn beetles of the subfamily Cerambycinae.
Dysdercus is a widespread genus of true bugs in the family Pyrrhocoridae; a number of species attacking cotton bolls may be called "cotton stainers".
Ropalopus is a genus of long-horned beetles in the family Cerambycidae. There are about 20 species of Ropalopus found in Eurasia, and a single species, Ropalopus sanguinicollis, found in the northeastern United States and southern Canada.
Oberea ruficollis is a species of beetle in the family Cerambycidae. It was described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1792, originally under the genus Saperda. It is known from the United States.
Zonitis is a genus of blister beetles in the family Meloidae. The genus was named and described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775.
Disonycha is a genus of flea beetles in the family Chrysomelidae. There are at least 30 described species in Disonycha.
Pseudorupilia ruficollis aka as the Swollen Restio Beetle is a member of the Chrysomelidae family. Pseudorupilia resembles the Australian genus Rupilia whence its generic name. It is known only from South Africa and is strongly associated with the Cape fynbos, feeding on the pollen of Restionaceae, Proteaceae and Asteraceae.
Silis is a genus of soldier beetles in the family Cantharidae, found mostly in Europe and the Americas. There are at least 80 described species in Silis.
Weston Fen is a 14-hectare (35-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Weston-on-the-Green in Oxfordshire.
