Municipal elections were held in the Czech Republic on 10–11 October 2014. Approximately 62,300 local council seats were elected. [1] The date of the elections was announced by the President Miloš Zeman in June 2014. [2]

Elections in the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic elects a legislature at a national level. The Parliament has two chambers. The Chamber of Deputies has 200 members, elected for a four-year term by proportional representation with a 5% election threshold for political parties. The Senate has 81 members in single-seat constituencies, elected by two-round runoff voting for a six-year term, with one third of seats contested every even year in the autumn. The President of the Czech Republic was indirectly elected for five-year terms until 2012; beginning with the 2013 election, the president is elected by direct two-round runoff voting.

The Czech Republic, also known by its short-form name, Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the west, Austria to the south, Slovakia to the east and Poland to the northeast. Miloš Zeman 3rd President of the Czech Republic

Miloš Zeman is a Czech politician serving as the third and current President of the Czech Republic since 8 March 2013. He previously served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2002. As Leader of the Czech Social Democratic Party during the 1990s, he transformed his party into one of the country's major political forces. Zeman was Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech parliament, from 1996 until he became Prime Minister two years later in 1998.

In same year, the party formed a governing coalition in the Prague City Assembly and Zdeněk Hřib became the current Mayor of Prague.

Early legislative elections were held in the Czech Republic on 25 and 26 October 2013, seven months before the constitutional expiry of the elected parliament's four year legislative term.

2012 Czech regional elections

Elections to regional councils in the Czech Republic were held in 13 regions on 12–13 October 2012. The Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) won in nine regions, though with a considerable loss of vote share. The Communist Party won in two regions and increased its vote share, finishing second overall. The election results were widely seen as a defeat for the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), which finished third overall and won only in the Plzeň Region. The regional grouping Mayors for Liberec Region won unexpectedly in Liberec Region.

2013 Czech presidential election election for President of the Czech Republic, held in January 2013

The first direct presidential election in the Czech Republic was held on 11–12 January 2013. No candidate received a majority of the votes in the first round, so a second round runoff election was held on 25–26 January. Nine individuals secured enough popular signatures or support of parliamentarians to become official candidates for the office. Miloš Zeman (SPOZ) and Karel Schwarzenberg qualified for the second round of the election.

The 2017 Czech legislative election was held in the Czech Republic on 20 and 21 October 2017. All 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected and the leader of the resultant government – Andrej Babiš of ANO 2011, became the Prime Minister.

Mayors for Liberec Region Czech political party

Mayors for Liberec Region, abbreviated to SLK is a regionalist party in the Czech Republic that was established prior Czech regional elections, 2008. The party won 2012 regional election in Liberec and its leader Martin Půta became hejtman. Půta is the first Hejtman who isn't a member of any major party in the Czech Republic. SLK cooperates with Mayors and Independents party.

Regional elections were held in the Czech Republic to elect the Regional Councils of 13 regions on 5–6 November 2004. They were won by Civic Democratic Party (ODS), whilst the ruling Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was heavily defeated, finishing third.

2000 Czech regional elections

Regional elections were held in the Czech Republic to elect the Regional Councils of 13 regions on 12 November 2000. Voter turnout was only 33.6%. The elections were won by the Civic Democratic Party, with Four-Coalition coming second and the ruling Czech Social Democratic Party in fourth.

2010 Czech municipal elections

Municipal elections were held in the Czech Republic on 15 and 16 October. The Civic Democratic Party won the most seats, although it lost in Prague. The elections were a success for the Czech Social Democratic Party and TOP 09, and were considered a revival for the Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party.

2002 Czech Social Democratic Party presidential primaries

Presidential primaries for the Czech Social Democratic Party were held between 22 October and 25 November 2002 in order to choose the party's candidate for the 2003 presidential election. Miloš Zeman received the highest number of votes. Other candidates were Jaroslav Bureš, Otakar Motejl and Otakar Potůček. Jakub S. Trojan was originally a 5th candidate.

Jiří Drahoš Czech physical chemist and politician; 2018 presidential candidate

Jiří Drahoš is a Czech physical chemist and politician, who has been Senator for the Prague 4 district since October 2018. Previously, Drahoš served as President of the Czech Academy of Sciences from 2009 to 2017, and was a candidate for the President of the Czech Republic in the 2018 election.

2014 Prague municipal election

Prague municipal election in 2014 was held as part of Czech municipal elections, 2014. It was held on 10 and 11 October 2014. ANO 2011 won the election and Adriana Krnáčová became the first female mayor of Prague.

2014 Plzeň municipal election

Plzeň municipal election in 2014 was held as part of Czech municipal elections, 2014. It was held on 10 and 11 October 2014. ANO 2011 received the highest number of votes but Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) won the same number of seats in the City's assembly. Civic Democratic Party ruled in Plzeň more than 20 years but was expected to lose its positions and receive only 10% of votes. In an electoral upset, ODS received more than 17%. Leader of local Civic Democrats Martin Baxa said that he believes that ODS was the actual victor of the election. Voter turnout was 33.73%.

Martin Baxa is a Czech politician who has been Civic Democratic Member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP) since October 2017. He previsouly served as Mayor of Plzeň from 2010 to 2014. He returned to the position in November 2018.

2018 Czech Social Democratic Party leadership election

A leadership election for the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was held in 2018 following the 2017 legislative election. Jan Hamáček was elected the new leader of the party, defeating Jiří Zimola in the second round.
