David Metzger (born December 12, 1960) is an American composer, conductor, arranger, and orchestrator who has worked on many Disney Animation films, including Wish , Frozen , Frozen 2 , Moana , Planes , Wreck-It Ralph , Tarzan , Brother Bear , and Mufasa: The Lion King. [1] [2] [3] [4] In addition to his work for Disney, he has done orchestrations for over 50 major films, composed the musical scores for Tarzan 2 , Brother Bear 2 , and Tarzan and Jane , [2] [3] and has numerous video game, theme park, television, and commercial credits, as well as co-arranging and orchestrating "When You Wish Upon a Star" for the 2006 Walt Disney Pictures logo with Mark Mancina, and co-composing the 2013 DisneyToon Studios logo with Mancina.

He was nominated for a Grammy Award for his producing work on Frozen 2 .

Metzger received a Tony and a Drama Desk nomination in 1998 for his orchestration of Broadway musical The Lion King.[ citation needed ] He won a DVDX award for best original score in a DVD premiere movie for Tarzan 2 in 2006.

He has orchestrated the Broadway musical Frozen [5] and is also orchestrating the musical August Rush. [6]

Metzger grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from California State University, Long Beach. [7] [8] He also did graduate work at UCLA. He began composing for choir and jazz band in junior high school. In his young adult years, he wrote many jazz band charts that are still played today. He was the arranger for jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson in the late 1980s. [9] From 1992 to 1997, he was the arranger for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno .

He was a longtime collaborator with film composer Mark Mancina. [10] Beginning in 2008 he has also worked with other notable Hollywood and Broadway composers including Robert Lopez, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Julia Michaels, Benjamin Rice, Alan Menken, John Powell, Alan Silvestri, Christophe Beck, and others. He currently lives in Oregon with his wife. He has two grown sons.

The Lion King is a 1994 American animated musical coming-of-age drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution under the Walt Disney Pictures banner. The film was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. It premiered in 1997 as part of the musical The Lion King, a stage adaptation of Disney's 1994 animated feature film of the same name. Mark Mancina produced the song and arranged by Mark A. Brymer. Taymor wrote the lyrics based on the melody from "Lala", a song from the 1995 soundtrack album Rhythm of the Pride Lands. Jason Raize, who first performed the role of Simba for the Broadway production, first performed and recorded "Endless Night"; his version is included on the original cast recording.

Moana: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the soundtrack to the 2016 Disney animated film of the same name. The soundtrack was released by Walt Disney Records on November 19, 2016. It features songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i, with lyrics in English, Samoan, Tokelauan and Tuvaluan. The two-disc deluxe edition includes the score, which was composed by Mancina, as well as demos, outtakes and instrumental karaoke tracks. The record also produced two singles.

The Jungle Book (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 2016 Disney film The Jungle Book, which is a live-action animated adaptation of the 1967 animated film The Jungle Book. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film features musical score composed and conducted by his frequent collaborator John Debney, mostly drawing from George Bruns' original music. Few of the tracks were incorporated from the 1967 film's soundtrack written by Sherman Brothers and Terry Gilkyson. The score was recorded at Los Angeles, California and New Orleans, with prominent players and large orchestral members recording the score. Released by Walt Disney Records on November 17, 2023, the album featured seven original songs with music and lyrics by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, and JP Saxe providing additional songwriting and composing one of the songs. An extended version of the soundtrack featuring instrumentals and demo recordings of the songs, and cues from the film score composed by Dave Metzger, released five days later, that coincided the film's theatrical release. Five singles—"This Wish", "This Is the Thanks I Get?!", "Welcome to Rosas", "I'm A Star" and "Knowing What I Know Now"—preceded the soundtrack.

The 2024 American animated musical drama film Mufasa: The Lion King has original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a score composed by Dave Metzger. The film's soundtrack album features seven songs and was released on December 13, 2024, through Walt Disney Records; a deluxe edition released on the same day includes the score and instrumental tracks. Metzger's score was also released on December 20, 2024, as its own digital album. The film is a prequel and sequel to The Lion King (2019), a photorealistically animated remake of The Lion King (1994); Miranda collaborated on the songs with South African composer Lebo M, who was involved with the 1994 film. Production on the album was handled by Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Tom MacDougall.
