Deirdre O'Connell is an American character actress who has worked extensively on stage, screen, and television. She has won a Tony Award and been nominated for Drama Desk Awards, among other awards and nominations.
O'Connell grew up in Massachusetts. She is the oldest of three children of Anne Ludlum, playwright and actress, and Thomas E. O'Connell, founding president of Berkshire Community College. She attended Taconic High School. [1] O'Connell enrolled at Antioch College in Ohio, but withdrew before graduating. [2]
O'Connell began her career at Stage One, an experimental theatre at the Boston Center for the Arts. [3] She made her Broadway debut in the 1986 revival of The Front Page , and was nominated for the 1991 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the off-Broadway production Love and Anger. She is the recipient of two Drama-Logue Awards and a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for her stage work in Los Angeles. [3] [4]
O'Connell made her screen debut in Tin Men . Additional film credits include State of Grace , Straight Talk , Leaving Normal , Fearless , City of Angels , Hearts in Atlantis , Imaginary Heroes , Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind , Wendy and Lucy , What Happens in Vegas , Secondhand Lions , and Synecdoche, New York .
She was a regular on L.A. Doctors and has made numerous guest appearances on series such as Kate & Allie , Chicago Hope , The Practice , Six Feet Under , Law & Order: Criminal Intent , and Nurse Jackie . From 1994 to 2010, O'Connell appeared on six episodes of Law & Order , four of them as Dr. Valerie Knight, Anita Van Buren's oncologist in Season 20.
In 2020, O'Connell received a Special Citation from the New York Drama Critics' Circle for career excellence, including her performance in Lucas Hnath's Dana H. at the Vineyard Theatre. [5] She also won the 2010 Ovation Award for Featured Actress in a Play for the role of Judy in the Center Theatre Group production of In the Wake. [6] She received 2020 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show performance in Lucas Hnath's Dana H. and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. [7]
O'Connell was given a special Obie Award in 2005 for sustained excellence of performance and was given a Best Actress award in 2020 for her performance in Dana H.[ citation needed ]
In 2022, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Dana H. [8]

Lucille Lortel was an American actress, artistic director, and theatrical producer. In the course of her career Lortel produced or co-produced nearly 500 plays, five of which were nominated for Tony Awards: As Is by William M. Hoffman, Angels Fall by Lanford Wilson, Blood Knot by Athol Fugard, Mbongeni Ngema's Sarafina!, and A Walk in the Woods by Lee Blessing. She also produced Marc Blitzstein's adaptation of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera, a production which ran for seven years and according to The New York Times "caused such a sensation that it...put Off-Broadway on the map."
Lynn Nottage is an American playwright whose work often focuses on the experience of working-class people, particularly working-class people who are Black. LaChanze Sapp-Gooding, known professionally as LaChanze, is an American actress, singer, and dancer. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical in 2006 for her role as Celie Harris Johnson in The Color Purple. In 2023, LaChanze received two more Tony Awards, this time as a producer. Second Stage Theater is a theater company founded in 1979 by Robyn Goodman and Carole Rothman and located in Manhattan, New York City. It produces both new plays and revivals of contemporary American plays by new playwrights and established writers. The company has two off-Broadway theaters, their main stage, the Tony Kiser Theater at 305 West 43rd Street on the corner of Eighth Avenue near the Theater District, and the McGinn/Cazale Theater at 2162 Broadway and 76th Street, on the Upper West Side. In April 2015, the company expanded into Broadway theater productions when it bought the Helen Hayes Theater.

A Doll's House, Part 2 is a 2017 play written by Lucas Hnath. The play premiered at the South Coast Repertory, in April 2017, before transferring to Broadway at the John Golden Theatre. The play "picks up after Henrik Ibsen's 1879 play A Doll's House concludes".
Dana H. is a play written by Lucas Hnath. The play, based on the real-life experiences of Hnath's mother Dana Higginbotham, premiered at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in previews on May 26, 2019 and officially on June 2. The production was directed by Les Waters and starred Deirdre O'Connell. The play premiered on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre in repertory with the Tina Satter play Is This a Room, premiering in previews on October 1, 2021 and officially on October 17. It closed on November 28. The play received three Tony Award nominations, winning for Best Actress in a Play (O'Connell) and Best Sound Design of a Play.
