The Department of Transport of state of Tamil Nadu is one of the departments of Government of Tamil Nadu.

Objective

The transport department is responsible for the maintenance of public transport and has control over seven transport undertakings. The department is also the nodal agency of the state government for projects implemented by the Indian Railways, the department of communications and the civil aviation of the Government of India. The commissionerate of transport (State Transport Authority) and Tamil Nadu motor vehicles maintenance department function under the department.

Transport authority

The state transport authority controls the major public transport agencies of the state: Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) and Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). [3] It is also responsible for managing the licensing and permits for private buses. [4] As of 2023, the state transport units operated 20,213 buses apart from 7,814 private buses and 3,990 mini-buses. [4] TNSTC has six operational divisions operating under the department and operates most inter-city services and intra-city services except in Chennai while SETC operates long distances bus services connecting major towns. [3] MTC is responsible for public bus transportation in Chennai. [3]

The motor vehicle maintenance department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all government owned vehicles including that of the chief minister. [5]

Avadi is a western suburb of Chennai, located within the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, India. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd. - (MTC), is the agency that operates the public bus service in Chennai, India. It is a subsidiary of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Ltd. As of December 2022 the MTC had a total fleet of 3,436 buses with 3,233 scheduled services, with on average 2.946 million passengers per day. On March 22, 2016, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reported that Chennai had the most crowded buses in the country with 1300 passengers per bus in each direction per day. During peak hours, in some routes, a bus with a capacity to accommodate 80 persons carries twice the number of people due to the extensiveness of the system. It has an operating area of 3,929 square kilometres (1,517 sq mi). MTC has a total of 604 routes with its largest terminus being Broadway in Central Chennai.

Tiruvannamalai Central Bus Station, commonly known as Tiruvannamalai New Bus Stand, is one of the bus termini of Tiruvannamalai. Sister stations include Manalurpet road station and nine other arterial festive time bus stations, which are primarily used for intra-city buses. The bus station is located 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) away from Tiruvannamalai railway station. The Shri Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar – Abithagujalaambal shrine is 2 km (1.2 mi) away.

Tiruvannamalai is predominantly connected by road to other major cities in the state including Chennai, Bengaluru, Vellore, Arani, Trichy, Tiruppur, Salem, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Shimoga and Kanchipuram. And also other state major cities such as Hyderabad, Tirupati, Puducherry and Mangaluru. Tiruvannamalai serves as one of the important Road junction of Tamil Nadu and north roadways Zone. The nearest domestic airport is Vellore, which has a no daily chartered flights. The nearest international airports are Chennai and Tiruchirappalli.

Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, officially Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus, is a bus terminus in Kilambakkam, Urapakkam along GST Road on the outskirts of Chennai for catering to the bus services towards the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu. It became operational on 30 December 2023. Spread over an area of 88.52 acres (358,200 m2), it is built to decongest the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus in Koyambedu. It will chiefly handle buses to southern Tamil Nadu, including cities such as Dindigul, Kanniyakumari, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Pondicherry, Sengottai, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur. It is an integrated bus terminus of mofussil buses operated by TNSTC, SETC KSRTC SWIFT and contractual (omni) buses. It will be connected to other parts of the Chennai Metropolitan Area and suburbs by MTC buses. Once the construction is completed this one will be Asia's biggest Bus Station.

Mattuthavani Bus Stand, officially M.G.R. Bus Stand, is an integrated bus terminus in the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. This is the third-largest bus terminus in Tamil Nadu after Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Bus Terminus in Chennai. It is one of the busiest bus terminals in south Tamil Nadu and one of the most important hubs in the state.
