Kanakilliyanallur Narayansamy Nehru (born November 9, 1952) is an Indian politician and Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply. [1] He is the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Tiruchirappalli West constituency. He is a former Minister for Transport in the Government of Tamil Nadu. He has been elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on five occasions as a candidate of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. He is presently elevated as Principal Secretary of DMK.

Personal life

K. N. Nehru was born in Kanakilliyanallur on November 9, 1952. He completed his school education and now lives in Trichy. His son K.N Arun Nehru is also actively working in Trichy DMK. [2] Nehru has three brothers and one sister.

Politics

Nehru's father is an Indian National Congress member that is why he named his son as Nehru. Later in the early 1970s his family moved to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.Started his political career as pullambadi union chairman.

In 2021 under his leadership Secular Progressive Alliance won all the 9 seats in Tiruchirappalli district.

Nehru successfully organized many high level party meetings were more than lakhs of DMK cadres come to participate, So the DMK party leader and tamilnadu chief Minister M. K. Stalin always praises Nehru as "Maanadu endraal Nehru, Nehru endraal Maanadu".

Nehru has been elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on four occasions, twice from Lalgudi constituency, in the elections of 1989 and 1996 [3] and thrice from 2006, 2016 and 2021 Tiruchirappalli West constituency

Minister for Transport

Nehru was the Minister for Transport in the DMK government from 2006 to 2011. During this period, the bus fleet was modernised and improvements were made to the frequency of buses, passenger amenities and connections to the new suburban areas of Chennai. [4] More than 10,000 new buses were introduced across the state. [5] [6] Fuel efficiency was given an important thrust and drivers were educated on importance of managing fuel. [7]

Charges

Cases have been filed on Nehru by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government but the courts have dismissed them as being vague.

The Madras High Court struck down the controversial land-grabbing cells which were primarily used to torment common people and opposition figures. The court had clearly remarked chance of misuse by officials and ruling government citing broad language used in the act. [8]

Arcot N. Veeraswami is a former minister for electricity in the Tamil Nadu State of India. He became the treasurer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Party and emerged as number three in the party after Karunanidhi and K Anbazhagan in the early 1980s. He was treated as the right-hand person to Karunanidhi and was also said to be the main peacemaker in the party. He was born in Kuppadichatham village in North Arcot district in Tamil Nadu on 21 April 1931 to Narayanasamy Naidu and Jeyammal couple. He finished his education before actively engaging in politics. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu assembly six times. From 1989 to 1991, during the DMK rule, he served as the Minister for Food and from 1996 to 2001 as the Minister for Health & Electricity. Furthermore, during 2006 - 2011 he served as the Minister for Electricity and Rural Industries.

Ethirajulu Vajjaravelu or E. V. Velu is an Indian politician who has been serving as the Minister of Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports in the M. K. Stalin ministry of the state of Tamil Nadu since 2021. He formerly served as the Minister for Food in the state under M. Karunanidhi (2006–2011).

The second legislative assembly election to the Madras state was held on 31 March 1957. This was the first election held after the linguistic reorganisation of Madras State in 1956. Indian National Congress and its leader, K. Kamaraj won the election and defeated their rival, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In 1954, due to the resignation of C. Rajagopalachari, for his controversial Kula Kalvi Thittam, the leadership of Congress was contested between K. Kamaraj, and C. Subramaniam. Eventually, K. Kamaraj, won the support of the party, was elected leader and chief minister of Madras State in 1954. In a surprise move, he appointed both M. Bhaktavatsalam and C. Subramaniam, to his cabinet, allowing great unity amongst the Congress that ruled the state of Madras, for the next decade. This election saw future DMK leaders M. Karunanidhi and K. Anbazhagan win their first MLA seats in the legislative assembly.

The third legislative assembly election to the Madras state was held on 21 February 1962. The Indian National Congress party, led by K. Kamaraj, won the election. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam made significant in-roads in the election and emerged as the second party for the first time by winning 50 seats. 1962 Election remains the most recent election in which Indian National Congress to form a majority Government in the State as its support was heavily declined due to rise of Dravidian political parties.

R. S. Raja Kannappan, formerly known as S. Kannappan, is an Indian politician and Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Higher Education. He also served as the Minister for Khadi and Village Industries from 2022 to 2023, Minister of Transport, Nationalised Transport, Motor Vehicles Act in the period 2021- March 2022 and also former Minister of Public Works, Highways and Electricity during 1991–1996. He joined the party DMK in Feb. 2020.

By-elections to eighteen state assembly constituencies were held in Tamil Nadu on 18 April 2019 together with 2019 Indian general election. N. Kayalvizhi is an Indian politician and a Member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly representing Dharapuram. She belongs to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. Kayalvizhi is the Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare in Tamil Nadu since May 7, 2021.
