R. S. Raja Kannappan,formerly known as S. Kannappan,is an Indian politician and Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Higher Education. [1] [2] He also served as the Minister for Khadi and Village Industries from 2022 to 2023,Minister of Transport,Nationalised Transport,Motor Vehicles Act in the period 2021- March 2022 and also former Minister of Public Works,Highways and Electricity during 1991–1996. He joined the party DMK in February 2020. [3]
He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) candidate from Tiruppattur (194) constituency in 1991 election. [4] He served as minister of Public Works during 1991–1996. He later founded the Makkal Tamil Desam (MTD) party. [5]
The MTD contested the 2001 election as a junior partner in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led front. In 2006,Kannappan dissolved his party and joined the DMK. He contested and won the 2006 election from the Ilaiyangudi constituency as a DMK candidate. In February 2009 he resigned from DMK and as an MLA. He joined the ADMK and contested the 2009 Indian general elections from the Sivaganga parliamentary constituency. He was defeated by the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate P. Chidambaram in a close election. [6] [7] [8]
Kannappan claimed that the BJP is attempting to saffronise the southern districts and polarise the voters on religious lines. He blamed the AIADMK leadership for aiding this situation. He then quit the AIADMK and decided to support the DMK-led front in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. [9]

He contested from Sivagangai Constituency and lost to the Congress Candidate P.Chidambaram. P.Chidambaram was declared the winner by a small margin of about 3400 votes. Even today,news articles (both print and video) announcing the details of the election and Kannappan's election petition against P.Chidambaram can be found on the internet. The case filed in 2009 is still unresolved though Chidambaram has completed his term as Lok sabha member from Sivaganga in May 2014. |

Kannappan —together with his wife,mother,two brothers,two sisters and mother-in-law —were among several former ADMK legislators charged with having assets disproportionate to their known income by Tamil Nadu Police in June 2005. [5] The issue had first been investigated in 1996 and all charges were dismissed by the courts in 2015 due to lack of evidence,by which time his wife and mother had died. [11]
Makkal Tamil Desam Katchi,generally just called Makkal Tamil Desam (MTD) is a political party in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. MTD was founded on 22 August 2000. MTD has its base amongst the Yadava(Konar)(ietaiyar)ietaiyan) caste in the north and southern parts of the state. The Tamil Nadu Yadava Mahasabai supported the formation of the party. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a Dravidian party founded by the former leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Vijayakant (Captain) at Madurai on 14 September 2005. The party was led by its founder until 14 December 2023 from its date of founding. From 14 December 2023,the DMDK is led by Vijayakant's wife Premallatha Vijayakant as general secretary of the party. The party served as the main opposition party in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 27 May 2011 to 21 February 2016. The thirteenth legislative assembly election,of Tamil Nadu was held on 8 May 2006. It was held for all 234 constituencies to elect the government in the state for the following five years. The votes were counted three days later on 11 May 2006 and all the results were out by the end of the day. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led (DMK) front won the elections,with the DMK emerging as the single-largest party with 96 seats,and its leader,M Karunanidhi was sworn in as Chief Minister for a fifth and final term. This election marked the first time the state saw a hung assembly with no party gaining a majority of its own. As a result,DMK formed a minority government with its allies,which is the first in the state since the 1952 election. 13th Assembly was instituted due to this election.
Ethirajulu Vajjaravelu or E. V. Velu is an Indian politician who has been serving as the Minister of Public Works,Highways and Minor Ports in the M. K. Stalin ministry of the state of Tamil Nadu since 2021. He formerly served as the Minister for Food in the state under M. Karunanidhi (2006–2011).
The twelfth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 10 May 2001. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led front won the elections and its general secretary,J. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Chief Minister,even though she could not legally run as MLA in this election. She was unanimously nominated as Chief Minister by her party and was ready to serve her second term. But due to criminal and corruption charges from her first term,on 21 September 2001,a five-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of India ruled in a unanimous verdict that "a person who is convicted for a criminal offense and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years cannot be appointed the Chief Minister of a State under Article 164 (1) read with (4) and cannot continue to function as such". Thereby,the bench decided that "in the appointment of Dr. J. Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister there has been a clear infringement of a Constitutional provision and that a writ of quo warranto must issue". In effect,her appointment as Chief Minister was declared null and invalid with retrospective effect. Therefore,technically,she was not the Chief Minister in the period between 14 May 2001 and 21 September 2001. After her resignation on 21 September 2001,she put in O. Panneerselvam,as the official 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,until she could clear up the charges from her first term,so she can take up the mantle of Chief Minister officially,on 2 March 2002.
The sixth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 10 June 1977. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won the election defeating its rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). M. G. Ramachandran,the AIADMK founder and a leading Tamil film actor,was sworn in as Chief Minister for the first time. The election was a four-cornered contest between the AIADMK,DMK,the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Janata Party.
Ramasamy Thamaraikani was an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu and a Member of Legislative Assembly. The 2009 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu was held for 39 seats in the state. There was a radical change in the alliances in this election compared to the last election,reminiscent of the 1999 election in Tamil Nadu. By-elections to nine state assembly constituencies were held in Tamil Nadu,in four separate phases. The election for Thirumangalam was held on 9 January and for Bargur,Thondamuthur,Ilaiyangudi,Cumbum,and Srivaikuntam constituencies on 18 August. Also,the election took place for Vandavasi and Tiruchendur constituency on 19 December 2009 and finally for Pennagaram constituency on 27 March 2010. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) defeated All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Thirumangalam in the first phase and kept the winning momentum in the following general election.
V. Karuppasamy Pandian is an Indian politician and a former Member of the Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu. He is currently one of the leaders of the anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) party in Tirunelveli district.
A. Asokan,also called Nagai Asokan,is an Indian politician and was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. K. V. Kandaswamy or k.v.k was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate from Kinathukadavu constituency in 1977,1980 and 1984 elections. He was widely considered to be the right hand of the CM,Dr M. G. Ramachandran. In the 1977 election he defeated the then DMK cabinet minister M. Kannappan. Kandaswamy was very popular among his people and lived without any caste difference. It was said that there were only two houses in Tamil Nadu which do not close,one being that of M. G. Ramachandran and the other being his own house where he lived alone till his death in 2008. He was a notorious and aggressive campaigner often defying the party lines and the CM,earning him the name "Negamam Napolean". This name was also used in the film Amaidhi Padai.
P. K. Sekar Babu is an Indian politician and Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. Currently,he is elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from Harbour as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in 2016 and 2021 elections. He won his first two elections from R k Nagar constituency as an AIADMK candidate.
The Fourteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members from 234 constituencies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Results were released on 13 May 2011. Two major parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced the election as coalitions of multiple political parties:DMK front consisted of 8 parties and the AIADMK of 11 parties. Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK),which had contested the previous elections independently,allied with the AIADMK coalition. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boycotted the election following a disagreement with Jayalalithaa over seat-sharing. The outgoing Karunanidhi government was noted for the construction of new assembly building in Chennai,execution of various developmental projects,and implementation of programmes including free health care for the poor and issuance of a range of freebies such as color television to all. However,these were heavily overshadowed by other major issues such as incessant power cuts in households and industries,excessive sand mining,increasing prices of essential items,2G spectrum case and undue influence of Karunanidhi's extended family in various aspects of Tamil politics and business and even media.
The 2014 Indian general elections for Tamil Nadu's 39 seats in the 16th Lok Sabha were held on 24 April 2014. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by its general secretary J. Jayalalithaa won a spectacular victory,taking 37 of the 39 seats. The total electors in the state of Tamil Nadu for the election was 55,114,867 and 73.74% of voters exercised their right to do so. The results of the elections were declared on 16 May 2014.
By-elections to eighteen state assembly constituencies were held in Tamil Nadu on 18 April 2019 together with 2019 Indian general election. It was considered to be mini-assembly election battle for the power in Tamil Nadu. The ruling government had to prove its majority while the opposition was trying hard to get maximum seats. There were 22 seats vacant in the Tamil Nadu assembly,By-election took place in two phases and in the first phase for 18 assembly constituencies together with Lok Sabha general election on 18 April 2019 in the state. Remaining 4 assembly constituencies election was held on 19 May. The counting of votes was conducted on 23 May,and on the same day the results were announced. Then the by-elections for 2 seats Vikravandi and Nanguneri were conducted on 21 October 2019
