C. Ponnaiyan is an Indian politician. He is one of the founding members of the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. [1] He is the former member of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from Tiruchengode constituency in 1977,1980,1984 and 2001. He served as the Presidium Chairman of AIADMK from 2003 to 2006. [2] [3]
He started his career as a lawyer. Attracted by the ideologies of Arignar Anna and Thanthai Periyar,he took to public life at an early age. He has served as Minister of Finance,Education,Industry,Agriculture,Cooperation,Highways,Transport,Law and IT. He was a close confidant of Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G. Ramachandran and served as Minister of Finance under Former Chief Minister Dr. J. Jayalalithaa.
C. Ponnaiyan was born to Shri. Chinnakutty Gounder and Smt. Nallamal in 1942. Hailing from an agrarian family in Tiruchengodu,he completed his schooling in Tirunchengodu where he was influenced by his teachers Kuppusamy,Shanmugam and Natesan to the tenets of C.N. Annadurai known as Anna). Later he went to complete his bachelor's degree in Commerce and Law subsequently practising as a Lawyer in the Madras High Court.
During his school days,Ponnaiyan was an active student and also the student secretary. He was inspired by the Dravidian ideologies and inculcated a spirit of commitment to society and the scuase of Tamil by Arignar Anna whom he regarded as a role model. This fervor took the mantle when he invited C.N. Annadurai to his school as chief guest. MGR's Nadodi Mannan film which poignantly embodied the doctrines of Anna fueled the ignited mind of the teenager who had a tormented ambition to commit himself to public life and made him join the DMK in 1957.
He practised law as Junior under Mr Mohan Kumaramangalam Mr. Raghavachari. He took part in the anti Hindi agitation alongside stalwarts C.N.Annadurai,M.G.Ramachandran,Nedunchezhian,K. A. Mathiazhagan,as it subdued the interests of Tamil Nadu. He later went to become the personal Lawyer of M.G.Ramachandran and was one of the founding members of Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1972. He was one of the trusted loyalists of M.G.Ramachandran and S.D.Somasasundaram.
C Ponnaiyan in June 2022,accused the BJP-led Central government of stealing Tamil Nadu's's revenue,as well as blaming AIADMK for election losses,loss of minority community support,and "anti-Tamil" policies,particularly those affecting students. [4]
When Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam came to power in 1977,he was inducted as a Minister in the cabinet of Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran. He held several portfolios including that of Transport,Highways,Law,Cooperation,Education,Industry,Agriculture and Sports. During his tenure as Transport Minister,public transport was extended to remote villages and Tamil Nadu Government was duly awarded by the Government of India. As an Education Minister,he promoted engineering education in Tamil Nadu. He also served as a Minister of Finance,Law,IT and Food from 2001 to 2006 in the Cabinet of Smt J.Jayalalithaa,Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He was a member of Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu elected from Tiruchengode constituency in 1977,1980,1984 and 2001.
He is married to Dr. Sarojaa Sengunthar,a Gynecologist and obstetrician by profession and the couple have two sons.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party with great influence in the state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. It is a Dravidian party founded by the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) at Madurai on 17 October 1972 as a breakaway faction from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after M. Karunanidhi expelled him from the party for demanding an account as the party treasurer. The party is adhering to the policy of socialism and secularism based on the principles of C. N. The ninth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 21 January 1989. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the election and its leader M. Karunanidhi,became the Chief Minister. It was his third term in office. The DMK was in power only for a short term,as it was dismissed on 31 January 1991 by the Indian Prime minister Chandra Shekhar using Article 356 (Otherwise) of the Indian Constitution.
The eighth legislative assembly election for Tamil Nadu was held on 24 December 1984. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won the election and its general secretary,incumbent M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R) was sworn in as Chief Minister,for the third time. The election victory was mainly attributed to the sympathy wave created by Indira Gandhi's assassination and M.G.R's illness coupled with Rajiv Gandhi's popularity. This is the last election M.G.R contested as he died in office in 1987. This is also the only General Election which M. Karunanidhi did not contest since 1957 until his death. As of 2023,this is the last election where the ruling party gained seats.

He also served as the party presidium chairman of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He is currently the longest serving ADMK MLA along with his opposition counterpart Duraimurugan.
S. Muthu (1915–1984) was a Tamil Social activist of the Dravidar Kazhagam and one of the five founding leaders along with CN Annadurai,Nedunchezhian,NV Natarajan and Mathiazhgan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and emerged a king maker when CN Annadurai died during DMK's first term in power and helped his then ally Muthuvel Karunanidhi to emerge as the leader of the party and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He was the chief ally of Karunanidhi when the later ousted MG Ramachandran (MGR) from DMK. When Karunanidhi consolidated his power base and increasingly eliminated the old horses of the party Mr Muthu was disillusioned with the party and later joined MGR's the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam just less than two years into the existence of ADMK in 1976. He was a powerful leader in the southern districts and helped MGR in his election campaign with his depth of knowledge of the electorate across the length and breadth of Tamil Nadu and helped ADMK storm into power in 1977. He served as the popular mayor of Madurai from 1971 to 1981. He also served as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council.
