Derek Wong Zi Liang (traditional Chinese: 黃梓良) (born 13 January 1989) is a Singaporean badminton player. Wong is a two-time Olympian, who took part at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. [1]

Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court.

Wong upset Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh, then ranked in the world’s top 10, at the quarterfinals of the Sea Games. He also came agonizingly close to upsetting the eventual gold medalist, Simon Santoso, in the next round. He led in the early stages of the semifinal match before succumbing to the Indonesian in straight sets. [2]

Wong's Olympic debut ended after a 21–17, 21–14 loss to Jan Ø. Jørgensen in his final Group I match at London's Wembley Arena on 31 July to finish second in the three-man group. "Of course, I wanted to play more games instead of just two. But being in my first Olympics has been a huge experience, and one that I will use for my career," Wong said afterwards. He had earlier beaten Israel's Misha Zilberman 21–9, 21–15 on 29 July. [3]

Fu Mingtian is a China born Singaporean badminton player. Fu came to Singapore in 2003 and became a Singapore citizen in 2007 under the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme. Fu became the first female Singaporean player to win the Southeast Asian Games women's singles badminton Gold medal in 2011 at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia. She beat second-seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21–12, 21–18 en route to the Final match. In the Finals, she beat home favourite Adriyanti Firdasari of Indonesia 14–21, 21–12, 22–20. Despite Fu's achievements, she was not selected for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and Gu Juan was selected.
Goh V Shem is a Malaysian professional badminton player in the doubles event. He was partnered with Tan Wee Kiong after their outstanding performance at the 2014 Thomas Cup. Together, Goh and Tan won the gold medal for the men's doubles event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games as well as all their matches in the mixed team event, helping Malaysia retain the gold medal for the third consecutive time. They also won the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games and the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, thus making them the second ever Malaysian men's doubles pair to win the silver medal at the Olympic Games 20 years after the feat was achieved by Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock in 1996 Atlanta. Goh and Tan are also the third Malaysian men's doubles pair to hold the world number 1 ranking after Cheah and Yap followed by Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong eversince official rankings were kept in the 80s.

Sören Hans Brad Opti is a badminton player from Suriname. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He lost to both Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and Derek Wong Zi Liang of Singapore during group play and did not advance further. Opti was the flagbearer for Suriname during the opening ceremony. Opti participated at the 2014 and 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. After winning many National and Regional junior titles, he became Surinamese National Champion Men's Singles in 2016 and retained this title in 2017 and 2018. In 2016 and 2018 he was runner-up at the Carebaco International. In 2016 he reached the semi-finals at the Chile International and the Santo Domingo Open.
