Namesake | Vivian Bullwinkel |
The Division of Bullwinkel is a proposed Australian electoral division in the state of Western Australia. It was created in 2024 as part of a redistribution, and is expected to come into effect at the 2025 federal election. [1] The seat is notionally held by the Labor Party. [2]
Bullwinkel will incorporate parts of the divisions of Hasluck, Durack, Swan, O'Connor, and Canning. [3]
The seat is named after Vivian Bullwinkel, an Australian Army nurse during the Second World War who was the sole surviving nurse of the Bangka Island Massacre. [4] [5] Vivian Statham died of a heart attack in Perth on Monday 3 July 2000 at the age of 84. Her courage while a prisoner of war of the Japanese exemplified the bravery of Australian women in war, and her distinguished post-war career was marked by many humanitarian achievements.
Bullwinkel and her husband resided in Perth Western Australia, for her last twenty years of life. Bullwinkel testified at the War Crimes Tribunal and throughout her life she advocated for the memory of the other nurses involved in the massacre. Well known in the WA nursing circles, a wing of Hollywood hospital is named after her, as is an Aged care facility north of Perth.
A number of objections were received to the adoption of the name Bullwinkel, preferring a local nurse from the Bangka Massacre named Alma Beard. The AEC rejected the objections on the grounds that the naming of electorates was to recognise the "extent of a person's contribution to the country as a whole". Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Statham, was an Australian Army nurse during the Second World War. She was the sole surviving nurse of the Bangka Island Massacre, when the Japanese killed 21 of her fellow nurses on Radji Beach, Bangka Island, in the Dutch East Indies on 16 February 1942.
The Bangka Island massacre was the killing of unarmed Australian nurses and wounded Allied soldiers on Bangka Island, east of Sumatra in the Indonesian archipelago on 16 February 1942. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II in the Pacific troops of the Imperial Japanese Army murdered 22 Australian Army nurses, 60 Australian and British soldiers, and crew members from the Vyner Brooke. The group were the only survivors from their steamship which had been sunk by Japanese bombers just after the defeat of Singapore. After surrendering to local Japanese forces on Bangka Island, which was then part of the Dutch East Indies, the group and its wounded were taken to a beach where they were killed by being bayonetted and machine gunned in the surf. Only South Australian nurse Sister Lieutenant Vivian Bullwinkel, American Eric Germann and Royal Navy Stoker Ernest Lloyd survived.

The Division of Pearce is an Australian electoral division in the state of Western Australia. It was created at the 1989 redistribution and named after George Pearce, the longest serving member of the Australian Senate, serving from 1901 to 1938. For most of its existence, Pearce was a hybrid urban-rural seat that covered Perth's outer northern suburbs before fanning inland from the Indian Ocean to take in portions of the Wheatbelt southeast, east and northeast of the capital. However, as of the 2021 redistribution, Pearce is largely coterminous with the City of Wanneroo in Perth's northern suburbs. It has had four members: Fred Chaney, Judi Moylan, Christian Porter, and Tracey Roberts. The first three were members of the Liberal Party, whereas Roberts, a former mayor of Wanneroo, is a member of the Labor Party.
In Australia, a redistribution is the process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral divisions for the House of Representatives arising from changes in population and changes in the number of representatives. There is no redistribution for the Senate as each State constitutes a division, though with multiple members. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), an independent statutory authority, oversees the apportionment and redistribution process for federal divisions, taking into account a number of factors. Politicians, political parties and the public may make submissions to the AEC on proposed new boundaries, but any interference with their deliberations is considered a serious offence.
