The Dutch National Kortebaan Speed Skating Championships have been held since 1924 if possible when there is natural ice. Since 1947 the national championships are organized by the KNSB. [1] [2]
The national championship are held according to the kortebaan principle, in a straight line over 160 meters for men and 140 meters for women. The championship consists of several rounds, in the first round all participants ride twice the distance, after which the fastest sixteen skaters advance to the second round. From this second round, eight advance to the semi-final and then four advance to the final. In that final all riders compete once, if a rider beats all three opponents he or she is champion. If no one has three stage wins, the times and from the final are added up and the one with the fastest time is the winner. For places two to four, only the times count.
Between 2004 and 2007 there were no artificial ice rinks in the Netherlands where kortebaan competitions could be held and so the speed skating discipline was dependent on natural ice. Since 2007 the national championships can be held on the large outdoor artificial ice rink FlevOnice.
