East Kolkata refers to the eastern areas of the city of Kolkata, India. It includes the localities of Metropolitan Township, Dhapa, Tangra, Bantala, Topsia, Tiljala, VIP Nagar, Anandapur, Kalikapur, Mukundapur, Ajoy Nagar, Panchasayar and certain parts of Garia like Baishnabghata-Patuli Township, Chak Garia, Nayabad and New Garia. The northern part of East Kolkata is dominated by the townships of Salt Lake and New Town. The region is characterized by well planned (regular) residential blocks and houses many of the attractions of the city.

Transport

The main road transport artery is the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass which runs from Ultadanga in the north to Baruipur Puratan Bazar in the south. Besides VIP Road, Salt Lake Bypass and Major Arterial Road are also important. Kolkata Metro Line 6 (which is under construction now) runs through East Kolkata.

Townships

East Kolkata has five major townships which constitute the bulk of the region. These are as follows :

IT Hub-Sector V

The Information Technology hub is the centre of some of the notable IT/ITES Indian and multinational companies. A total of 1,500 companies (by April 2019) have their office space in Sector V. More than 2 lakh people are employed in Sector V, Salt Lake City by 2018. The area is administered by Naba Diganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA). Sector V has a total road length of 17 km. Lack of adequate public transport is a major problem of this area. After the commissioning of Metro Line 2 (expected by March 2019) and Metro Line 6 (both lines have an intersection at Sector V Station) the situation is expected to improve. The State Government has also planned a flyover at the College More Crossing for smooth traffic movement.

New Town is a fast-growing planned satellite city of Kolkata. It comes under North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is close to Kolkata and covered by New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA). HIDCO plans developing infrastructure like - roads, drains, sewerage line, water supply lines, major beautification works etc. and executes constructions like - buildings, projects, parks, museum, subways, overbridges etc. in New Town. This new information technology and residential hub is being developed on the north-eastern fringes of Kolkata. The area mainly consisted of huge acres of cultivable lands and water bodies, which have been acquired and developed in a planned manner. The process of investing in residential and industrial facilities and infrastructural development of the area has mainly started under the leadership of the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu in the late 1990s. The master plan envisions a township which is at least three times bigger than the neighbouring planned Salt Lake City. New Town has been also declared as a Solar City by the previous UPA government at the centre and now the initiatives are being taken to declare this city as Smart Green City, a dream project of Narendra Modi with the help of Government of West Bengal according to a proposal submitted by Mamata Banerjee. New Town was enabled with 10.5 km of Wi-Fi Zone along the Major Arterial Road from Haldiram, near Dumdum/Kolkata Airport to Salt Lake Sector V, which also make it India's first Wi-Fi road connectivity. The stretch has already been declared as a green corridor.

Kolkata is located in the eastern part of India. It has spread linearly along the banks of Hooghly River. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has an area of 205 square kilometres. The city is near sea level, with the average elevation being 17 feet. The whole area is in the Ganges Delta which starts within 100 km south to the city. Most of the city was originally marshy wetlands, remnants of which can still be found especially towards the eastern parts of the city.

Eastern Metropolitan Bypass Road in Kolkata, India

The Eastern Metropolitan Bypass is a 32 kilometres (20 mi) major road on the east side of Kolkata. It connects Ultadanga to Baruipur Puratan Bazar. The road is a major link to Salt Lake and New Town. Kolkata Bus Rapid Transit System

Kolkata BRTS is a bus rapid transit system taken up by KMDA. Beginning at Ultadanga, the route will cover 15.5 km running along the E M Bypass to Garia. The corridor connects major growth centres like Ultadanga, Salt Lake, Tangra Metropolitan, Anandapur, Mukundapur and Patuli township. The project is under construction, and expected to be completed by 2013.

Biswa Bangla Sarani is a 33 km long road in Kolkata Metropolitan Area, India. It starts from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and ends at Garia Kamalgazi.
