East Kolkata refers to the eastern areas of the city of Kolkata, India. It includes the localities of Metropolitan Township, Dhapa, Tangra, Bantala, Topsia, Tiljala, VIP Nagar, Anandapur, Kalikapur, Mukundapur, Ajoy Nagar, Panchasayar and certain parts of Garia like Baishnabghata-Patuli Township, Chak Garia, Nayabad and New Garia. The northern part of East Kolkata is dominated by the townships of Salt Lake and New Town. The region is characterized by well planned (regular) residential blocks and houses many of the attractions of the city.
The main road transport artery is the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass which runs from Ultadanga in the north to Baruipur Puratan Bazar in the south. Besides VIP Road, Salt Lake Bypass and Major Arterial Road are also important. Kolkata Metro Orange Line (which is under construction now) runs through East Kolkata.
East Kolkata has five major townships which constitute the bulk of the region. These are as follows :
The Information Technology hub is the centre of some of the notable IT/ITES Indian and multinational companies. A total of 1,500 companies (by April 2019) have their office space in Sector V. [4] More than 2 lakh people are employed in Sector V, Salt Lake City by 2018. The area is administered by Naba Diganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA). Sector V has a total road length of 17 km. Lack of adequate public transport is a major problem of this area. The commissioning of Kolkata Metro's Green and Orange Lines situation is expected to improve the situation. The State Government has also planned a flyover at the College More Crossing for smooth traffic movement.

Bidhannagar, also known as Salt Lake City, is a city and a municipal corporation of North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the Bidhannagar subdivision. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and is located on the north-east side of Kolkata.
Santoshpur is a neighbourhood of South Kolkata in West Bengal, India. It is loosely bounded by Garfa to the north, the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass to the east, Jadavpur to the west and Baghajatin to the south.

It connects Ultadanga to Baruipur Puratan Bazar. The road is a major link to Salt Lake and New Town. EM Bypass is part of State Highway 3. EM Bypass is centered with major hotels, business parks, high residential blocks and other high-end construction and development.
Baishnabghata Patuli Township is a locality of East Kolkata in Kolkata district, West Bengal. It constitutes a major portion of Garia. Baishnaghata Patuli Township is a World Bank–funded project on the eastern fringes of EM Bypass, currently one of the most promising area of East Kolkata. The Township is divided into a number of designated Blocks, extending both side of the busy by pass connector.

Kolkata BRTS is a proposed bus rapid transit system taken up by KMDA. Beginning at Ultadanga, the route will cover 15.5 km running along the E M Bypass to Garia. The corridor connects major growth centres like Ultadanga, Salt Lake, Tangra Metropolitan, Anandapur, Mukundapur and Patuli township.
Baghajatin is a locality of South Kolkata in the South 24 Parganas district in Indian state of West Bengal. It has been named in honour of Jatindranath Mukherjee whose nom de guerre was Bagha (Tiger) Jatin. It is located in the southern part of the city and is surrounded by Jadavpur and Santoshpur in the north, Chak Garia and Panchasayar in the east, Baishnabghata Patuli Township in the south and Bijoygarh and Regent Estate in the west. The locality is referred to as the middle-class and currently growing very well-off, upper-middle-class people's locality in South Kolkata. Though it is surrounded by its rich and famous areas, over the it still remains primarily a nice upper-middle-class neighbourhood. Apart from its critical location in south Calcutta, it is also a place inhabited by prominent people with strong social and cultural background. The two most important landmarks that signify this locality are Baghajatin railway station, Baghajatin bus terminal and EM Bypass which are the lifeline of this locality and its USP.

Orange Line is a rapid transit metro line of the Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It will connect New Garia with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport via two major satellite towns of Kolkata metropolitan region, Salt Lake and New Town. It currently operates between Kavi Subhash and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. This line will be one of the most important stretches of Kolkata Metro because it will connect the southern and the eastern parts of the city with Kolkata Airport. The total distance of this route will be 29.87 km (18.56 mi). It has an interchange with Blue Line at Kavi Subhash and will eventually connect with Green Line near IT Centre and Yellow Line at Jai Hind.
Biswa Bangla Sarani is a 33 km long road in Kolkata Metropolitan Area, India. It starts from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and ends at Garia Kamalgazi. The road passes through Kaikhali, Haldiram (Teghoria), New Town, Salt Lake, Chingrighata, Dhapa, Science City, VIP Bazar, Ruby, Kalikapur, Mukundapur, Ajoy Nagar, Patuli, Garia Dhalai Bridge and ends in Garia Kamalgazi. This road is known by different names in different parts of its way. This road connects the Garia area of South Kolkata with Kolkata Airport easily through Salt Lake and New Town. The length of the road is approximately 33 kilometers. The road is of 6 lanes in New Town part and the bypass is of 4 lanes. Efforts are being made to upgrade the part of bypass into 8 lanes.
