Eastbank Primary School is a primary school located in the Shettleston district of Glasgow, Scotland.

The school's catchment area includes the eastern portion of Shettleston, as well as the districts of Sandyhills, and Mount Vernon.

History

The history of the school goes back to 1894, and the founding of Eastbank Academy, which had been proposed by Dr Alexander Scott of the Shettleston School Board in the late 1880s. Although originally a senior secondary school, Eastbank also began providing primary education. In 1901, the school's name was changed to Eastbank Public School in recognition of its dual role in both primary and secondary education. As the roll of the school grew, a new building was required, and this was constructed on Academy Street in 1910.

Following the re-organisation of education in Glasgow in the 1930s, which saw the two tier system of junior and senior secondaries abolished, Eastbank Primary School was formally established as separate entity, but as its parent institution expanded to become a comprehensive secondary, it was relegated out of the Academy Street building in 1936 and into prefabricated structures on the Amulree Street side of the campus. This arrangement remained after the war, and in 1966, construction work began on a permanent new home on nearby Gartocher Road. The new building was formally opened in May 1969, marking its full independence from Eastbank Academy, but it retained its affiliation - sharing the same colours, badge and motto, and remains one of its six feeder schools.

In 1994, the school celebrated its centenary, along with its parent institution, and in 1995 - the original primary school buildings on Academy Street (which had been left empty since the academy had moved into new accommodation in 1986), was repurposed as a clinic by Greater Glasgow Health Board.

Motto

The school's motto, Splendeat Lux, is a contraction of the Latin phrase Splendeat Lux Vestra which, when taken from Matthew Chapter 5, Verse 16 (the Sermon on the Mount), translates literally as "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works.",
